The game's continuity

Hey, so where exactly do you think this game is going to start from?  Where do you want it to start from?

Could it be from one of Command's endings?  Or could it cut out Command and start off where a previous game ended?  Or give the series a fresh start like DKC Returns did?

I honestly think it will be a reboot. Smash 4 didn't include Krystal which may mean the series is going to be a reboot. If it wasn't a reboot, we would probably have seen Krystal in Smash.

I'm hoping they make it a direct sequel to 64 taking place after the Robot Andross ending, starting an alternate timeline. It would be a good compromise to please both sides of the fandom.

To be honest I would have agreed with you if Krystal was not a collectible Trophy in SSB4. The fact that they mention her instead of trying to erase her from existence makes me think they want to start at the end of Assault and continue from there.

I don't even care as long as it doesn't mention command in any way XD

I think it's time they make allot of things clear backstory wise. So how does this sound.

You have the main story where you play as starfox.

BUT then you get to play as side characters from the very beginning of their origin. Like play through Wolf's story which begins perhaps shortly before Andross hires him in starfox 64 then play through the story from Starwolf's point of view from 64 to assault (Even the WiiU game too if applied)

Let you play as Katt from back when she was in Falco's gang, through 64 and perhaps through the WiiU game too.

Play as Billy which pretty much covers Fox's and his time at that flight academy.

Play as Krystal from when her planet was (attacked? Or destroyed from natural causes, I forgot which one) to the beginnings of adventure (Not actually play adventures, just ending on her getting the distress call for Sauria and going there)

And at last, James McCloud. Play his story from whenever to when Pigma betrays him.

Now if that doesn't happen. Then I kinda wanna see an assault 2. Assault was BOOMING with potential and I think we will have a REALLY good game if they perfect all of their gameplay/story problems.

OF COURSE, have a few options. Different ways to play through the story. An Ar-wing only story (For the people who hates the ground combat), a ground only story (For adventure (Just to even out the flying only), and then a mixture of both (For people like me who likes both styles)

I'm talking about a perfect assault style. Like the ar-wing missions fixed up, the controls better, the ground combat perfected. I'm talking like an assault style game that you can't possibly hate because it does everything right.

And a hub world of the great fox would be nice. This way after our missions we can go to Falco's room and say whats up to him, perhaps get some back story. Or even go to Krystals room and see if she'll open up a bit to her back story from her planet. (I know that sounds like the normandy from mass effect a bit buuuuut I quite enjoyed those conversations. Garrus was fun, James Vega and that gay guy were just hilarious. I know people hate James, but at least his conversations were funny) Also, its all optional, so you can still go through the story without talking to anyone.

And I suppose for fun, the great fox has a game room where you play multiplayer online (And perhaps starfox SNES like what other games do when they add in the first game in a series for side fun)

So how do those ideas sound?

Forget Command, continue from Assault.

I'd be OK with a reboot, but they're getting really old. A reboot is like a "get out of jail free" card...

If you're not happy with your continuity, then you only have yourself to blame, so WORK WITH IT and do something awesome!

Sometimes reboots are more or less necessary, though, so again, I'd be fine with that, but I'd still rather have it continue where Assault left off.

I don't want to see anything continued from Command. I mean, Krystal being with Star Wolf would be kinda interesting, but ehhh...

Remember how EARLY the E3 build of Star Fox was? It was just a square map with re-used assets from a canceled Wii SF game and SF643D. It was so "test-mode" that where the ground met the skybox was obvious as hell. Smash was most-likely feature-complete by then, with development focused on debugging. If not, at least the plans for the final product were in place.

In other words, Smash clearly pre-dates SFU even development-wise, so we really cannot rely on Smash to tell us ANYTHING about SFU.

It has already been confirmed that the Star Fox team in this game has Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy. Unless we're getting more retcons then it's not set in the same continuity as Assault and Command at least. Put in developer comments on the state of the series during Adventures to now and you have a picture.

I would hardly say an early proof-of-concept build tells us anything about the story or characters in it. For all we know, the team was the SF64 team because that's what assets NCL had on-hand at the time.

That build was WAY too early to show. Honestly, they should have just made an updated Star Fox logo and said one is coming.

Miyamoto himself said they are this game's Star Fox team.

He did? Where?

I would like to see proof as well. If this is really the case, I will be greatly disappointed. It would mean the storyline has not advanced since 1996.

Yeah, I'm going to third the call for a source on that.

It's waaaaay too early to make that kind of statement. Even if it's the same team, the story can advance. Given that we know squat about the story, let's not make hasty judgments, m'kay?

Fair enough, I see your point. It's just concerning to me that if this is really true then basically everything that could advance the story prior to the start of the game would occur off-screen. I believe this was a major gripe people had about the jumps between 64 and Adventures, and then Adventures to Assault. Too much stuff happening outside the context of the game's themselves leaves far too many variables to make assumptions about in regards to why "Character X does ABC" when their personality would dictate they do the opposite.

Eh...wait what? If this game were a post-64 reboot then it would basically leave off where 64 ended. Are you worried it's going to be a post-64 game where almost 20 years have passed between the two games? Because I don't think they'd do that. Even if it were confirmed the team were Fox/Falco/Slippy/Peppy that doesn't even mean it's a reboot. It could be post-Command with Krystal on Star Wolf and Peppy back on Star Fox for all we know.

In other news the fact that 1996 was 18 years ago just fucked me up real bad

Whoops, yeah

Got stuck on 1996 because my brother was born that year and no he can't be that old he just can't

Even worse, 1998 and 2030 are the same amount of time away from the present. O_o

Command basically flipped off coherent continuity with its multiple endings. It will be fascinating to see how they piece the story [that is largely composed of random pieces] back together.

Means nothing, especially considering, as Fur said, that Krystal is a trophy.

I want to hump you right now.

Unfortunately, Pepper's trophy mentions his retirement with Peppy being his replacement.

Then again, James' trophy says that he dies so the Pepper one might be false.

Smash 4 was in production way, way, way before Star Fox U was. To use it as an indication of what any aspect of the game could be like is erroneous at best.

James is still dead though.

I'm not sure what I think about Peppy replacing the General. They CAN go back in time a bit DX (Like after 64 or after adventures or after assault and before command) I think they are doing pretty enormous time skips too, like it's gonna be like 3 or 4 more starfox games before fox and team looks like pepper assault old DX (I personally don't think they should have set a time line. Just say "This is the order of the story, the time gaps inbetween the games wont be mentioned because reasons."

True, although the story for the next starfox game may very well have been written before smash 4 (And just not OKayed by Nintendo till recently) And that's assuming Trophies were being made back then, Trophies (At least the starfox ones) could have been one of the last things they did in smash 4 so they can get word on the next starfox's game story when its writing was finished.

Considering Sakurai has specifically said they only included Greninja based on concept art for X and Y I'm pretty sure this was a very long time before Star Fox U had a story locked. While some of the trophies have interesting descriptions, they really only refer to backstory and stuff that's happened in the games that people have played already--it's still no real indication that Star Fox U is going that way. It's not like they're going to refer to events that haven't happened yet, even a reboot.

I'm implying things.

With the episodic structure of this game, continuing after Assault ought to be easy. I mean, it's not like they have to make another universe saving adventure, so just show some post-Assault shenanigans the team get's into between the saving Lylat every five minutes.

And of course, Command turns out to be a nightmare Fox had after a drinking contest with Falco that turned out to be a horrible idea.
