A new Star Fox game has been announce for the Wii U during the last E3. So far we've only seen an early build of the game and gotten details of it being an episodic type game. The creator behind Star Fox said he wanted the series to be like the Thunder Birds or something about puppets.

So my questions is, which art style do you think or wish to be in the next upcoming Star Fox game? Assaults or 64's Design ?

Personally I prefer Assaults's art style to give it that mature feeling. So, which design do you guys prefer ?

Wish: Assault for everyone

Except for Fox and Wolf i think they look much better in 64

Think: Go a new direction for a new generation

Edit Misread

Assault was kind of ugly and 64 is kind of outdated. The series needs a new coat of paint and Fox needs a look that isn't "deformed shiba inu".

I want the characters to look like how they do in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

But I want everything else to have the design that Assault had during the fancier cutscenes.

One thing is certain though: PLEASE NO PUPPETS.

I hate how they look less like characters in some of the games and more like puppets, even if that was what Miyamoto intended.

Assault was pretty dull but you got to admit the vehicle designs look nice even by today standards.

Totally agree with you. The SNES Star Fox designer team could had done a better job making them look more like characters and less like puppets. Also puppets aren't trendy in this generation and probably weren't in the 90's ether so just maybe the Wii U Dev team might change their minds.

I think the style can be easily and beautifully updated to WiiU standards.

But anything is better than massive forehead Command Fox.

Noooot really? In general everything was a mess of sharp angles. The Arwing was stumpy, the Landmaster having wheels was weird, etc. I mean, it wasn't the worst ever but the sparkly "futuristic" look doesn't grab me nor do I think it fits the tone of the series that well.

I'd rather they shoot for a new art style. Assault's was fugly as hell and 64 is dated. I wouldn't mind if Miyamoto elaborated on the puppet style, just as long as they made the characters look good.

As for as the Arwing is concerned, I think using the N64 Arwing (updated to look more refined, of course) would be best as it's the one that most people are familiar with, and since my ideal new SF game would be an alternative direct sequel to 64, that would make the most sense anyway.

Assault's designs were weird, Fox's forehead was too big and Krystal looks dead.  Also the spandexes need to go.

64's designs are too blocky, even in the remake.  But I like the grittiness of the original.

Adventure's character designs are pretty good.

The snes designs are nice, It captures that old school sci-fi feel.

Command is just, no.

I heard the Arwing is going to transform into a walker or tank. I don't know if this is a rumor or not but is sure sounds like its been influence by Star Fox 2's design

A polished something with a clear sense of style. A lot of things could be pulled off here so long as the game knows what it is and strives to present just that.

Oh yeah, the barrel roll animation needs to be snappy. Screw that puking ballerina crud in Assault.

Vehicle wise, I'm not really fond of any of the designs to-date. Don't hate them but eehh...

As for character visuals Adventures was in a good path. Can't really complain.

Though if I had to say my pipe-dream of a SF thing:

UDam46I.jpg

Compare & contrast. I'm just saying but being made in 1998 with this visual superiority it still makes recent stuff (*cough2006*) seem like crap.

A few rounded edges, more aerodynamics and they might have a thing.

Sure as heck that Project ACES art direction is timeless and memorable though.

Yeah the Assault barrel roll was somewhat dull. Hopefully they bring back Star Fox 64's barrel roll style

I think it would be best if the characters had new designs, or at least their designs from Brawl. Most of the character designs in Assault (especially 64) look dated. However, I really enjoyed Wolf's design in Assault, so perhaps that could be an exception?

I think there should be a mix. Assault's Great Fox was pretty awesome, imo. For the Arwings, maybe a mix of Command and Adventures. Characters... eh... I liked Fox's design in Adventures, but apart from that, a complete overhaul, just as long as they're not puppets. I'd like to see something cinematic, but with choices as well but I doubt that'll happen, I'd love it if it felt like the conflict/war that is going on is on a massive scale, and it's not just Star Fox mowing down enemies; I'd love it to have an epic feel, like when you're playing a game you love and the atmosphere is intense; there is so much going on and it makes you think to yourself, "Holy cr*p this is amazing!". But I digress. So really, I don't think anything should look exactly the same, it should have it's own art style that could potentially redefine the series from quirky space animals in space, to gritty sci-fi war story epic. But like I said, I doubt (however hopeful) that it'll happen.

All mechanical design done by Shoji Kawamori and Mamoru Nagano.

That's it, I expect my check in the mail, Nintendo.

The over-futurized style of Assault was a theme I personally liked...

I know not everyone was a fan of the arwing designs, but they're genuinely unique in their own right.

(And lets face it, the fuselage on the Adventures arwing looks remarkably similar to some other fighter designs I've seen from the likes of starwars. )

I was also a rather large fan of the designs of all the Cornerian aligned capital vessels in Assault (Greatfox, Cornerian Battlecruiser)

As for character designs, I liked most everyone's designs... save for the lack of scarves and the fact that they gave Krystal a fucking catsuit for some overly-sexualized and poorly explained reasons. Seriously: colored jumpsuit, scarf, white flight jacket, optional sunglasses if badass. Best damn design for the team's outfits.

The SNES and 64 have a retro-futuristic, almost art-deco, aesthetic that I love love love. However, a lot of that's due to hindsight and  graphical limitations. Everything has all the curviness of a 1980s BMW because POLYGONS. But it still inspires a sense of childlike wonder in me that I can't explain. The GC titles, especially Adventures, look pretty even today, but there's just something missing. It tried way too hard to be what is simply was not It wasn't Zelda, and it wasn't Halo. They tried too hard to cater to the hardcore campaigners who sat in wraparound couches in the basement in front of an upright-piano-sized HDTV with a VCR clocking every move for 48 hours with no bathroom breaks. They weren't memorable, and they weren't fun. I just hope that Nintendo's learned their lesson and makes it actually enjoyable for the fan AND the casuals.

Also, no goddamn puppets. Just no. Put that shit in Mario or whatever.

I've said i preferred  an Assault look in the past but i wouldn't mind a mix

for example

- Boss fights like the ones in Star Fox 64

- Assault's Arwing design

- Landmasters design from Smash bros

- A variety of ships to choose from like in Command

- Going inside a base or battle like in Star Fox 2

I'd actually rather the new art style reference a bunch of modern sci-fi; Arwings would look fantastic, if they had stubby wings, and rounded edges like the Viper Mk.IIIs from Battlestar Galactica.

Honestly, for stuff like the ship designs... the smaller fighters like the Arwing, I'd like to see 64-style, though I do like Assault's Wolfen.  For most of the rest though, especially the larger ships, I love Assaults's look.  ...Really, I think it's just that I like Assault's visuals except for the Arwing itself.  It's design looks too flimsy compared to the 64 design of it.  Too many structural weaknesses.

The same goes for the characters themselves, I like Assault's look - it's the voicing that I had issues with in Assault, not the looks.

So in generally, visually I would prever Assault for everything except the Arwing, for which I would prefer 64-style.
