SF643D's Soundtrack Is Out, But How Does It Hold Up?

Now that (most of) Star Fox 64 3D's are on YouTube (thanks to piplupwater), we can all finally get a taste of these awesome songs! I took the liberty of making a YouTubeDouble of each track (that's prominently featured in both versions of the game) so comparing the two is simple and easy! Remember: the purpose of these aren't to listen to them simultaneously, but to watch one after another to pick out the good -- or bad -- differences! (But, listening to certain tracks together sure is cool)

What remastered songs do you think sounded the best? Which sounded the worse? Why? I'm curious to find out what people's general opinion of these songs are.

If links are incorrect or songs are missing from this compilation, please reply; just keep in mind that:

1.) I might not have found a particular track uploaded on YouTube yet featured in both versions of the game. (I'm sure different "Start Demos" and "Boss Themes" exist)

2.) Multiplayer has entirely different music from the original, and other added/canned songs in either version aren't comparable; thus irrelevant in this list.

3.) "Game Over" is on stand-by; I haven't found the entire song yet.

Here's the list compiled for your convenience:

Best: Hard to choose between Area 6 and Zoness; I love them both because of their climatic choirs! Also, as quick as it is, "Get Through the Hole (Enter Demo)" is really cool with that wavy synthesizer! Sector X and Aquas would be ranking up there also if there were just MINOR alterations (Sector X's second half is a bit blah with overpowering harmony and I just miss Aquas' choir throughout the song).

Worst (I'll use this word 'very loosely'): Boss B and Macbeth (& Titania) win Bronze medals. Its not that they didn't bring enough from the original, they just sound inferior to the originals. Boss B is my favorite song from Star Fox 64; here it seems that sections are outshining others, (like when the lower brass has the melody near the end of the loop, you can't even hear it, thanks to 'dem strings!), and I am not a fan of that cheeky organ. Macbeth (& Titania) has the same problems; near the end of the loop, building up to the final hurrah, some stupid section is messing it all up blaring their harmony!

EDIT: Boss B has another incarnation that sounds just like the original, so now my least-favorite song is just Macbeth.

Those are the two that stand out the most from the original in more bad ways than good, but every track in this game is still awesome in their own, special intensities. (My nit-picking side is responsible for the second-half of my response!)

Guest Mr. Nintendo

I'm going to be pretty honest about this... although I like both of the arrangements of all the songs, point goes to the old SF64.

Reason: I noticed that one of my favorite VGMs of SF64 "Corneria" has changed alot in which during 0:24-0:30, the part where you hear the cello (Or Violin...I'm really bad about guessing music instruments) is now replaced with something to me that sounds like a MIDI arrangement of "Corneria" which to me...isn't really my style.

I guess I'm the user who prefers listening to old/first VGM than a remade one...

I agree with Mr. N. The new arrangements are alright, but well... They could have done so much better! :/

From what I've listened to so far, I'd say that the original soundtrack is overall superior, but it'll be nice to have some good new versions of these classic tunes. :P

its sounds sort of like starfox assaults music....if this remake didnt have new music, then it would just be worth less since theres nothing new, oh wait yes there is, it got new music, and thats like really the only new thing this game has, besides graphics and 3D

Let's not forget the new "local" multiplayer mode, which I -- and a vast majority of others -- won't be able to play anyway (living in a small town, urgh)...

I don't think it sounds like the Assault OST at all. The music was nearly orchestrated in Assault, while in SF64-3D, it really sounds like MIDI...

Confirming there are more than three boss tracks (this one sounding pretty true to the original); during the second-half of the Meteo Crusher fight ("Ha... you're not as stupid as you LOOK!") you hear a different track in the background with balanced dynamics and TRUMPETS playing the melody, which sounds more like the original. It can be heard on this playthrough pretty clearly (and since it takes him some time to beat the boss, you get a good chunk of the song).

Its near the 0:27:30 mark.

It still sounds like a MIDI arrangement of that song to me...and it doesn't really fit with the boss unless he was either in a jungle or in a cartoon.

besides the music the SFXs sound great. BTW the land master looks great to, and for some reason the game feels short.

Can't be any shorter than the original.

look at a star fox 64 gamplay on corneria and then look at the vid that was post here, SF64 on corneria is like 6/7 mins long and this one is like 4\5 mins long,

I wish I'd gotten more constructive responses, like Mr. Nintendo's... :\

I, too, enjoy the original's soundtrack, but I've decided not to dwell on the past; embrace this new soundtrack, because its certainly what I'll be listening to more than the original after September 9.

I can say, without an inch of doubt, that the level design will not be so drastically altered as to take 'less time' to complete than the original.

As far as the on-rail-missions go, there could be multiple "objectives" and time can change based on the player's actions -- like taking a different route, failing to blast something or by using the breaks/boost. In all-range mode, you usually have to kill a certain amount of enemies (or boss[es]) or survive for a specific amount of time; that first one is in the player's control.

its still feels short, and im only talking about the first mission with out taking the 2nd path. BTW the arwing flys faster (with out using the boost)in this remake for some reason, maybe this is why i think it feels to short, and they also shorten the cutscenes at the beginning of macbeth.!.

Gonna break up the party here and say I prefer the new music more. It feels better composed, more solid, and has a better overall mood to it than SF64's rather generic "military" sounding compositions.

In effect, you could say the remakes songs sound more like SF64 tunes done in the SNES style.

I don't think it's bad, but compared to the original soundtrack it just doesn't hold up, I'm a little disappointed on that account.

What do you mean by SNES style? As far as I know what mostly defined the music on the SNES, was the jazzy tracks for planet level, and classical tracks for space levels. Along with the recurrence of the main theme. And it was way better executed than that.

This is more like, tons of reverb with really bad samples... I wonder who arranged the soundtrack ?

Whoa guy y u so mad. I didn't even mention Assault's music. (which was well composed but pretty much the only good tunes were the SF64 remixes).

That first track is find. Its tranquil and I enjoy it. The second one is.... ok, that one's bad. As for the "SNES" feel, I mostly mean the planet level music in the 3DS game have that same somewhat jazzy sound to it. Its not exactly it, but I like it. Its more colorful sounding than the dull military beats that most of the planet stages had on the N64. Now, some music isn't better in the remake, namely I find Boss Battle B and the Andross brain theme to be inferior to the 64 versions, because they work well with the military theme the N64 used. Well, the Brain Andross theme isn't bad, but it sounds more like Zelda music on the 3DS.

im not mad its that nintendo could of done a better job, but they were working on other 3DS games, so maybe thats why the music didnt sound that great.

I think they let Q-Game work on too much stuff, even though I haven't seen the credits, lots of stuff just reminds me of command...

Scratch that, Q-Game did most of the game, Dylan Cuthbert was even credited as the Director (like if that made sense, he's by career a wiz programmer, not a director!).

The Arranger is Satomi Terui, probably working at Q-Games.

They even modified the SF64 credits, and removed Benimaruh itoh from the special thanks... :(

ya rly

Well I somewhat feel like it got no soul. I can't seem to picture anything going along that music. It also comes out of nowhere after the super happy end theme, I feel it crashes the mood. However, It has potential. But listening to it brings me one question. Why ?

I guess I'll never like the sf64 ending theme...

By the way, the multiplayer theme has little friends waiting to be introduced :troll:
