(Some graphic imagery, discretion advised)

Just a day after our local marathon where I live, this happens. Absolutely crazy. My heart goes out to those affected.

Who honestly does something like this.

Thoughts and hopes go out to the people affected by this tragedy.  Note that if there are any insulting and/or conspiracy-theorist type remarks in this thread, I will not be a happy camper.

Large amount of information as well as video at this links as well - http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/15/live-updates-explosion-at-boston-marathon/?smid=tw-share

There is currently a no-fly zone over the city of Boston, and from what I've grasped cellphone service has been completely shut down as well.  There has also been a noticeable increase in police activity in nearby major cities; NYC, for example, has increased police presence in Manhattan quite a bit as well as in the subways and at the bridges and tunnels.

I'm confused with the *motive. Why on Earth want to wish death upon another man, not to mention to physically scar dozens of others. I don't get it. I just don't.

EDIT: *Yet I have an idea that I think is the cause

Keep it to yourself and there will be no problems.  Speculation is not necessary in this thread; the official investigation will take time.

Video from the first explosion.  There isn't any particularly graphic content to speak of in this footage, though be warned that it can be unsettling.

Shit is going insane in Boston right now. If you live there please stay safe. I don't know why more news stations aren't on top of this but there was a shooting at MiT and there is a massive police chase going on involving explosives and a hijacked police SUV. Listening to the police scanner now.

At MiT as of today? I need to check the news this morning.

You've all seen the fertilizer plant explosion, in case you haven't, Michael Bay has some things to learn.

Joking aside, the death toll is rising (EDIT: 12 bodies recovered, over 200 injured). The explosion was absurdly huge though, news reports say it was akin to a 2.5 magnitude earthquake, damaged between 100 and 140 homes, and could be felt up to 70 miles away. I don't understand the thinking in storing that much chemical, most notably used to make the bombs used in Oklahoma City, in one place, and even if you did, keep it in the middle of nowhere where nobody can get hurt by it. Seems like a recipe for disaster. Either way, praying for those in the immediate vicinity of the blast.

Another notable chemical plant explosion, however this one is much farther away from anyone, save for a nearby car.

The fertilizer plant was built in the 50's and the town was built up around it because there weren't any zoning restrictions at the time, from what I gather. Either way this is an unfortunate but, to my knowledge, completely unrelated incident to Boston's current lockdown.

edit: Boston is in lockdown, suspect White Hat is believed to be a 19-year-old Chechnyan named Djohar Tsarnaev, the other suspect (and his brother) died last night.

Mirroring what Dras said, the manhunt continues.  One of the subjects was killed during a shootout with police last night after he shot an MIT Campus Police Officer to death.  Police audio from that incident has been released.

This whole thing is awful. I hope they can learn why all this was done from the younger brother.
