I've pretty much lost what little faith I had in the police force after seeing that.

Well...

You don't expect to say your going to shoot up a school and not catch eyes. Even as a joke. In the time of the recent Sandy Hook, these things cannot be taken lightly. The thing about the internet is Anon. Anon is invisible, anonymous, yet holds real actions. If some random user came to SF-O and we knew little about him and says things like "shooting up schools" or some crap. I know I would be nervous, the mods and etc. would be on watch. Even if the guy was instigated. Think before say.

Still, I think the sentence is a bit drastic and extensive. That I do think is bullshit. Yet, knowing Texas, I'm relieved he didn't get some outrageous punishment like capital punishment.

Except the fact that it was someone calling him insane unfairly.

I think he had the right to make a comeback with a sarcastic joke after being insulted.

What's putting me off about this is that, unless I'm just too tired to read, they don't seem to have done any psychological evaluation on the kid at all; not to determine if he was joking, or if he wasn't, why he'd do such a thing. My high school actually received a shooting threat and, while our mental health system is a far cry from perfect, they didn't default to jail forever, they got her help. I mean, short-stop throwing a kid in prison for a joke wouldn't be surprising considering the recent shenanigans Texas has been up to, but being so quick to write it off as a "terrorist threat" seems ridiculous. Especially that, comparing it to things like Aurora or Sandy Hook, those shooters weren't running around making stupid jokes about what they were going to do on League of Legends beforehand.

They've confirmed that it was a sarcastic statement.

No I figure he was, I mean they seem to have put zero effort into ensuring that themselves if he's still in jail, unless he's just being held for making a stupid joke as opposed to actually making "terrorist threats" or whatever the charge was.

I know I've said this many times before, but I'm going to say it again. I'm freaking done. I don't want to live on this planet any more.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think murder is something to joke about, but going to prison for 8 freaking years for one sarcastic remark is freaking insane. If making sarcastic jokes is illegal, well than damn me! I've got the death sentence!

This is just nuts. =_=

I understand that the inclusion of school shooting into the mixture of things makes it exponentially worse because there's such a fear of them lately, but such a reaction to such an obviously sarcastic comment, I mean g'damn. Hell, I've taken the liberty of going to a little site specifically about posting legitimate amusing or pathetic messages from actual League games, and grabbed some noteworthy examples of just what can and does get said on League because some of these are pretty fucking bad and said with less obvious sarcasm and more unbridled rage.

NSFW'n 'em just in case because some are pretty blood bad.

Anyways, this shit can just ruin the lad's life for something that hasn't been done billionfold elsewhere with no repercussions.

If I explained my feelings on the subject I'd be sitting in the prison with this guy under whatever crazed law Texas thinks it's upholding. Needless to say, faith in American Government which was already rock bottom, has now started to dig.

Yeeeeah, this. Once again somebody in our justice system was like "Hey, what can we do to make the people too scared to cross us? We'll take a kid's joke COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTEXT and threaten to lock them up! People really fall inline when even their children aren't safe, we learned that from the 60's!" </conspiracy theory>

But jokes aside, I have a hard time seeing how anyone justifies crap like this - except if they're part of some crazy Illuminati conspiracy to control people. ;P Like, the universe is just making zero sense more and more these days because of crap like this.

Oh right, about the topic

Uhh...

They should arrest CoD players too! I tell ye, they get violent over anything.

Read the fucking comments! Those idiots are fighting a literal one sided flame war because the only CoD fan left FIVE MONTHS AGO!

Calm down dude, no need to be upset at me.

I'm simply upset that idiots just can't learn to shut up! Who people lash out at when they're upset, usually, doesn't matter.

EDIT: That awkward moment when you realize you didn't post the video...

Fixed.

I kinda lost interest in listening to the rant, but I got the point.

I tend to not hang out on places like League of Legends or CoD servers because I know the people in there tend to not be very mature. There's a reason I choose my communities carefully, and this place just happens to be a more mature community.

I've noticed though, over the message that was actually written, people while reading messages nowadays don't seem to notice quotation marks. Numerous times when I talk to someone and use quotations, they don't even seem to notice they exist and take the quote as my word. Grammar was created for a reason!

*Heads over to the Pet Peeves thread*

Well I don't know how name calling is unfair or what exactly happened in the game. Yet, really, you CANNOT expect to say dumb shit like that and not expect wary eyes.

I actually disagree HE because it is clearly a sarcastic brush off of another statement directed at him. Anyone can see it.

Hell, if things I've said with that tone were taken literally, that'd mean there's people out there that think I'm a flamboyantly gay Chinese manwhore who's constantly spitting out man babies (and loads more things) and there's a number of people out there that must be living in mortal terror of the day I make good on my statement of ramming hot coals so far up their ass it'll give 'em heartburn.

But people generally don't because they're obviously not serious statements and anyone that does believe those kinds of things, well, I wouldn't expect them to have the sense to pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.

The reason this really happened is because it's just so people can say they're doing a job that they really aren't at this point, and to make an example of the lad.

Well, after you hear/read "Ripping out the hearts of children..." its meant for a lulz or two. But, yeah, I agree its a joke and its obvious it is. I found it kinda funny. The only crime I saw was the bad presentation. Yet the subject is just to strong to make jokes about it yet. Really all school shootings are. I know my school got a tweet that said someone was angry for a test and was going to hit the school with a homemade bomb. His joke was sarcastic too. "God these teachers want me to make a fucking bomb and ram it into 130C" Two hours it took to lit the worry and spaz everyone out. Even as a joke, a joke on a serious subject, people still get concerned.

That and Mrs. Mountie Mommy seems like either the responsible parent or the over reactive worrier. I know I wouldn't go to those lengths... hell I wouldn't do jack. If there was any cause of this it would be that mother.

She should jump off a bridge since she can't get sarcastic jokes. ;)

Well it sounds like in the case of your school the joking threat was aimed SQUARELY at them - all the poor kid in question did was respond to an insult with a broad sarcastic statement. I think the difference in scope is important in determining just how alarmed anyone should be. We can't just blanket jokes without looking at context because then stupid crap like this happens, and will continue to happen, and then we won't be able to joke about ANYTHING, ever. XD
