Minecraft Direction

OK, so the Minecraft server is going well now.

I want to know what you guys want to do with it. A few of us have started building things, but before we get too much further into that I'd like to discuss what we have and what we want to do.

Game mode:

Server is currently in Creative with no monsters. I can change this, and kind of want to, but I'll do whatever you guys want.

PvP:

I have constructed a PvP arena for PvP matches. It is a stadium with a sandstone infield that has hills, cacti, water, and lava. PvP will be allowed here.

As far as PvP outside the arena, we need to discuss that, though I really do not want PvP near spawn as there are public buildings there.

Public Buildings and Infrastructure:

- Public Workshop

- Public Forge

- Spawn Plaza

- PvP Arena

- Automated Minecart Railway (Though Grief Protection likes to delete the minecarts. )

I can add a public dormitory or inn. Any other public buildings you guys want?

White-listing:

The server is currently using a whitelist. I am hesitant to go public because of griefers, but what do you guys think?

I was hoping to build a walk-in tiki bar. I have a design all set 'n such. As well as a design for my house.

 

On top of that we should have a decision on how large personal buildings might be. 

 

That and keep it white-listed. I know a couple griefers that when they're bored with Reddit's shit they try to find new smaller servers.

Yeah whitelist is really best, I don't want all my future work on a tower to the METAL GODS to be completely demolished by some douche. XD And that's basically my plan - tower to the metal gods, complete with lava moat and other fun things. Gonna try and make it mostly vertical and as tall as possible. >:3

For a major project, as in everyone working together, we should make Corneria, Krazoa Palace, or just a floating 8/16 bit head of Andross and Arwings then and there. 

 

That and I might ask for some space to create a Botanical/Zen Garden...

Floating Andross head... that'd be quite a sight. But honestly how is everyone gonna collaborate on something we don't have any set blueprints for? I can imagine Andross turning into a Picasso painting in the sky quite easily. XD

I think that it should go public, just because with this protection system we have, it's nearly impossible to grief other people's stuff unless the owner is careless with their land claims.  I have a few friends who aren't on the server that might like to join us as well.

Well I'm not to sure about that. I've seen griefers with astounding hacking ability and programs that can bypass some protection mods. One big group who has shown their ability is AVO or Team Avolition who isn't the only group that does these things for the lulz. Maybe give the true pubers limited access and have a trust program. More time + Good buildings = Higher trust = more abilities.

Its quite narcissistic to think that people would go to astounding lengths to grief a random and small local server such as an SFO one. Its also a level of paranoia i don't think has been earned yet by any actions whatsoever. Until the server is targeted by griefers, there is no reason to pretend like the moment you open to the public the entire server would be flooded by ne'er do wells and "hackers."

 

I say let the server open until events prove that action to be folly.

I was about to ask what the actual chances of getting hacked by a large scale group like that would be.  And if they can do all that, who's to say they can't get on the whitelist anyway?

Maybe setting the server up to make iterative backups of the world and THEN opening it up would make some sense. That way if there be hax we can restore it to a previous state. That seems like the best middle ground approach.

Believe me Waffles I've seen people look for and grief smaller servers. Like one time me and a the staff from another server opened up a small one for testing the new patch (when beta 1.8 was new) because the bukkit for the new patch hadn't been installed yet. Very very small, we only had like 6 houses and all of them the first-time-survival kinda house.

 

We didn't protect the server and eventually some random guy none of us knew stumbled upon it and started putting all the wooden houses on fire. Which destroyed all of the houses. Mine was made of cobblestone but he eventually found some dynamite.

 

And again: Random IP no-one knew, very very small village located somewhere on the map, yet was found and griefed. This is why every public server has basic protection.

Fire doesn't spread and TNT only works if the owner of land allows it to work.  So that can't happen on this server unless there's hax involved.  But even then, I'm not even 100% positive there ARE hacks for that.

So according to all of this the only sure way of protecting against griefers is not playing minecraft at all.

Alright, but my question is why would someone target an unknown server?  I mean, belaying the fact that it happened once.  Sure it -can- happen, but I've been to tons of well known servers that didn't have whitelists that were doing fine.  I know of a bunch of lesser known servers that have never had a hacker.  It seems silly to keep the server under wraps so much, and feel like I'm bugging DZ if I want a friend to join or something of the like.
