Are you too good at Star Fox?

This question really only occurred to me as I was taking my 3DS around and playing with people with and without the 3DS port of Star Fox 64.

I've noticed the past while that as a follower of the series (And a member of this site), I tend to be better at most of the games compared to other people around me, even if they've played more shooting and flying games than me (And for those of you who have seen me play TF2, you know what my aim can be like...).

Is Star Fox too much of a cult thing for many people to be interested in playing and improving at?

Do any of you simply go out and beat your friends in Star Fox games?

Well I don't know about being too good at the game, but I can see the point you are trying to make. For instance, when I was younger, I used to play SF64 a lot with two of my cousins. One of them in particular might as well have been considered the best player ever in VS mode. Generally speaking, he would dominate the regular Point-style match where first to X number of kills wins. It made sense that he and his bro would be good at it, because they were more used to playing against human opponents than I was, since they always played together and whatnot. You know how people use the somersault to counter-act the opponent's somersault in SF Assault? Well, let me put it this way, my cousin was so incredibly patient, even if I tried to throw off his timing by hitting the breaks to "fake" the somersault, he'd stay right with me. Keep in mind of course, this is SF64, when it was much harder to pull off this kind of strategy. Once I attempted the somersault, sure enough, he timed it almost perfectly, where we wouldn't even cross paths in the middle of the loop. It was even more mesmerizing to watch him shoot down the bogeys in the Time Attack mode. One time in particular that sticks in my mind is when we chose the maximum time limit of (I believe 5 minutes, if I recall?) and he shot down 54 enemies by himself. I completely lost focus on my game (luckily I was only using the landmaster) and I couldn't keep my eyes off of what would be the greatest performance anyone would ever put on that I had ever seen. To this day I can't even come remotely close to 54. I'll break a 40 consistently, but i've never hit 50.

So anyways, back to me. I simply can't be beaten by my friends who don't really play SF Assault that much. Even if I let them use Wolf, and I play as Krystal, I can dominate easily. (Although I do forget to turn off that demon launcher sometimes  ) And then naturally, they don't enjoy the game as much as they would if we were more evenly matched. I try to help them as much as I can, but years of experience cannot be transmitted in a few hours of casual gaming effectively. Then again, i'd probably enjoy the game more if it had AI opponents in vs mode, and more than 4 "players" at once (lets add Panther and Leon to vs as well, and maybe Andrew too). Someone's gotta mod SFAssault to allow that to happen...but I can only dream. That's of course, a different topic altogether.

So in short, I don't think SF multiplayer has become a cult thing. I think it's more along the lines of people simply not having exposure to the series, which in turn, makes it harder for them to adjust to a new experience when the person they are playing against knows all the tricks. Think of it like this, take a random FPS game that you may be playing for the first time. Even though you know the controls since they are mostly the same these days...you can't keep up with your opponent because they know where all the good hiding spots are, and where all the good weapons are located on each map. This can be used as an explanation as to why SFAssault is hard for newcomers (besides the over the top speed of character on foot movement).

As of now I'm kind of out of practice, but right after 64 3D came out my best friend and I would spend hours trying to beat each other's high scores. We eventually got pretty darn good.

When I had a 3DS a little over a year ago, I invited 2 other friends, and my younger sister to play. Besides my younger sister, whom owned the game, but rarely played it, none of my friends had played a Star Fox before. They actually put up a good fight most of the time.

I am referring to the multipler, but I don't think Star Fox is that culty. It's just not as popular as it was. I think it's easily accessible, and not particularly hard to play. It's just that many people prefer other kinds of games.

I know this might be too late to suggest, but with such games when I'm very good, I pretend to make mistakes. I was recently play a rather similar game to Assault, called 'Metal Arms = Glitch in the System' (HIGHLY recommended game). I was dominating my friends on the first match, so half way through it I deliberally started pretending to make mistakes such as missing shots, missing jumps, letting them get to vehicles first (but still look as I've I'm racing them for it), etc.

They never suspected a thing, and I found that they enjoyed the game MUCH more than if I would've given it my all. I still won all the matches, but they felt good having defeated me a fair few times, considering it was their first time.

I've just got round to ordering Assault again (I moved to Japan, so my PAL copy is on the other side of the world). I'll be introducing this to my friend, and I'll be doing the same tactic - deliberatly messing up sometimes to give him a change. That being said, my friend isn't terrible at such games (he kicked my arse at Smash Bros N64 the other week), and I'm sure after a few gaming sessions, I won't have to fake it - I'll genuinely be sweating to get 1st place.

I say try this out in the future.

No, cos nobody plays it with me.

Yeah, that happens too. In terms of the series, there just isn't enough to go along with it to make it more known or fun to play.

Put any starfox game in my hands, and I out-fly everyone I've every played it with. True, I've been shot down a number of times, and my ex managed to get a killstreak of 2 on me once, but I still slaughter everyone.

Starfox Assault: Blitz for the nearest Arwing or Wolfen, hop in, find the laser upgrade, fire continuously at anything that moves.

Starfox Command: SPAM LAZORS

Starfox 64 3D: Charge shot, charge shot, charge shot, laser upgrade, charge shot

Really? On the 3DS port you do charged shots? I've found while playing with friends the reticle is really bad at locking onto Arwings. I tend to kill people free shooting; SPAM DEM LASERS

But even when I play my friends, I dominate them! They complain Star Fox is hard!
