Krystal or Fara

I was floating around this site and an in between the command hate you see A lot of love for the characters. And it seems an interesting debate started for me. Who is better for Fox? Krystal or Fara?

my opinion being Krystal, aside from looking different and bringing in variety to the characters, you don't have that strange plot twist of her looking like his mother (and his father sense his Mother and father looked similar to me) Krystal might also be not the best pilot, she's definitely not the worst -cough- slippy -cough- (we all know, put him in a tank and he'll wreck) she also has mystical powers that no one else has in the squad.

And she seems the only one to really develop over the games, if evan a little

so Krystal (McCloud. :3)

(Fyi, sorry I couldn't set this up properly, I'm using my phone to do this and some bits of this site don't work. I will keep a running count. Maybe ill edit it if I can hijack a comp from someone)

Krystal, 3

fara, 5

While her character still needs a few fix ups, I still say Krystal is meant for Fox.

I would have to agree that Krystal is better suited for Fox..in my opinion. Fara for all we know isn't really canon anymore, since we have yet to see her in a game.

It's pretty evident from Adventures that Fox and Krystal are meant to be, but I do like Fara as a character and I also think that she and Fox had strong chemistry. However, how far this went really is open to interpretation because Fox had some kind of "you look like my mom" familiarity thing going on and perhaps that sense of comfort influenced his feelings, innocently of course. But that's delving into psychology and I don't want to go too off topic. xD

I'll be the hipster here.  I ship Fox and Miyu.  Plenty of fanart that depicts her as an independent bad ass - Fox needs to be challenged.

Ok, that out of the way since it wasn't an option...Fara.  Nintendo had plenty of time to try and redeem Krystal, didn't, and ended up making a cop-out that eventually wrote her out of Fox's life in multiple ways (Command).  Let Krystal go try and be a solo mercenary and let Fara jump in so Star Fox can get a sweet deal on new Arwings for the crew.

(Also, disregard the personal text.  Im just lazy.)

...Why not both? o3o

...

Oh god that sounded so perverted.

kthxbai--

On a serious note though, both characters have their own quirks and traits (Krystal under a lesser light, but work could be done). I can't really 'choose' a 'side' of the stemming fanbase since I don't see point on it really. I don't really ship anyone either, anyway. :-P

Plus fandom warfare over personal shipping is downright ridiculous.

Although I can say I'm more familiarized with Krystal inb4 Orb is a post-SFAdventures noob. Fara seem(ed) a nice character from the original canon otherwise.

Oh, also;

why_fight_each_other__by_ala1n_j-d5wh9p0

Just sayin'. o3o

But answering the question; on the current instance, Fara is a better choice -IMHO- for a love interest for Fox, when thinking of potential story quality. I don't know much of the old canon, but as far as I'm concerned, Fara has some quirky personality of sorts, and as much as I like more Krystal as a character personally (*brick rain incoming*), there's a lot to be fixed, and story to be filled and made sense out of, because otherwise, right now it won't make even a halfway-decent romance plot without some really heavy wishful thinking.

It's not like a pair of blue boobs can buy loyalty of fans--

*cue 90% of the fanbase*

...Ignore what I just said. :-P

Fara's was clearly a well defined character when compared to Krystal. Other than being written as a rich brat, shes depicted as brash and adventurous as Fox. Its a shame her character never went further than the comics.

Your age chart isn't right, like, at all. Fox was 26 when he met Krystal.

Who is better for Fox?

This is a horrible way to judge the worth of a character.

Neither of them are "better for Fox" considering Fox is such a cardboard, static character that there's never been any reason for his character to need a romantic partner to facilitate his development. The only reason either of them wound up with him is because they're female and he's the protagonist.

Fara is a better character than Krystal in the sense that Fara didn't break the rules of the universe by simply existing. Other than that they're basically on the same level.

Well played, sir.  Spoken like a true scholar...  You have made one of the greatest debates in life so simple now!

I guess if we go by which romantic interest did develop his character the "most", then the only one we can almost all vouch for was Krystal showing audiences that Fox is awkward and can't communicate with women.  At all.  And through several games.

I don't recall much impact Fara had on his character development, but then I don't remember much about the comic where she appears.

As far as ages, since apparently there was some discrepancy (actually there is still some discrepancy since Krystal was 19 according to Arwingpedia).  I am leaning more and more towards Fara.  Franchise needs a faux-cougar mom-look-alike to invoke all of those oedipal feels in Fox....Perfect...

Honestly, I don't really care which one gets with Fox.

As long as they could make it so Fara and Krystal would be in the game, I don't mind..

I've come to think that most romance sub-plot are terrible, and just don't bring anything useful to a story. Most of the time its for a single event where one of the two lovers is about to die and gets saved by the other one, and that's pretty much it.. But then again, maybe that's just meant to make the characters feel more "human"-like with drives and such..

I'm not sure exactly what to think of all this. I've seen and heard so much criticism on the whole thing.

I'm still trying to figure out if it can ever be interesting, or what's the right way to do it (in works of fictions I mean).. :/

However, I tend to find Fara much more interesting than Krystal as a character and in general attitude, canon-wise, and in terms of possible expansion. But that's me.. Here's how I see it:

I mean sure, Krystal is supposed to be from some dead civilization, that dresses funny and have British accents. But the direction they took with her, kinda denies all that.. Most of it was retconned, or barely ever mentioned again, or even just forgotten. All in order to make her an instant ideal pilot/team member/love interest. Not to mention, most of her background was tied to Dinosaur Planet(the game not the planet), Randorn, Sabre, and her exterminated tribe. And its all lost in the transition to the SF universe. And she tends to be fairly helpless, or unmotivated(in the sense that she doesn't take much initiative, and relies on others too much in cases she shouldn't) most of the time in the games. With the exception of SF Comamnd, and maybe the beginning of adventure(its unclear why exactly she's going over that temple really, given she has no ties to dinosaur planet(the planet, Sauria in the SF universe) and should be instead focusing on recent events, like her survival, and the loss of her civilization for example), where she actually do things on her own.

But Fara got some decent roots in the Lylat system. Being involved in the CDF and in Space Dynamics, the unique arms manufacturer on Corneria, gives her a good position, and a chance to contribute to the plot or team in many ways through her relations, status, or job. And there is still much room for development, given her background wasn't explained, or changed in a way to make it hard to revisit. She also got a pretty cocky attitude, and she's prone to impulsive / rash behavior.

Plus, she's a fennec fox, which is awesome ! And, I'm not sure if I'd really want to see the character stay "nerfed" to be a "Nintendo love interest" though. So Fox can ship whatever they want him to, as long as they can include Fara and the other missing characters, I don't care !

I don't really expect to accurately explain my reasons for liking one or the other, or hold a debate about it.. Because after all, its kinda random for everyone, and not really all that logical..

I think the pairing to resolve all shipping issues, is Everyone X Everyone ! :D

It could be kinda hilarious when you think about it XD

By the way, I tend to be very skeptical about the whole oedipal issues thing.. First, Fara hardly resemble Fox's mother on her portrait. Then, the whole glass case housing a fancy dress in a rebel hideout on a poor and under enemy control planet that Fox exiled to, but yet managed to carry over there with little other more meaningful souvenirs or stuff, when considering the rest of the plot kinda being more logical at this point, sounds like a very unusual fairy tale-esque turn of event. And thus feels like a quick last minute change that wasn't thought about for very long..

That's why I think people can make some odd conclusions, such as speculating this is necessarily oedipal issues, yet, nothing ever proved it, or hinted at the fact that Fox wanted/saw his mom in Fara. Or more precisely, nothing let us know directly that Fox feels like banging his mom, or that he has a fascination for her. The worst part is that in the original story, Oedipus wanted to kill his father to marry his mother, yet, Fox had only love for his father, fact that is made obvious when he cries a little when meeting him again and then promptly having to leave him..

He never even hints at Fara's "resemblance" to his mom until the very end, after Peppy starts it. It really sounds to me like the whole amputation theory..

I mean, it was most likely just a mean to give a role to Fara in the end, without making her too important in the plot. Something like: Wear the robe = looks like fox's mom from a ship high in the sky, looks like fox's mom + Andross's weird crush on fox's mom = diversion, diversion + andross revealing all he had done to Fox's familly = Fox is pissed, Fox is pissed + Fox inside Andross's battleship = victory.

Wow, that post didn't look that big in my head..... 0_o

EDIT:

Ninjaed..

@Xi: Fox is 25 in the SF SNES canon. Fara's age is unknown.

@sroberson: DO NOT believe arwingpedia. Its filled with junk and admin accepted fanon. Its run by a childish admin with some silly ideas on how to run a wiki.. Some dude with a name related to koopa troopas or something.. I don't think any has changed since I last went on that website.. No offense to the Arwingpedia staff, btw..

And, where did the cougar comes from ? :/

^ In the comic Fox straight-up says Fara looks like his mom (even though she really doesn't, which made it weirder that they included that line) in a scene where he's also remarking how beautiful she was in Vixy's dress, so I get how people might've been weirded out by that.

Personally I always liked the weird little fan theory about Fara being a clone of Vixy created by Andross after her death and the series doing kind of a Luke-and-Leia thing with her and Fox.

I guess if we go by which romantic interest did develop his character the "most", then the only one we can almost all vouch for was Krystal showing audiences that Fox is awkward and can't communicate with women.  At all.  And through several games.

It's actually more depressing when you phrase it like that...

Yeah, you're right, fox does mention it. I just accidentally put a "when" instead of an "after" and it messed up everything I was trying to say.. XD

I meant to say this "He never even hints at Fara's "resemblance" to his mom until the very end, after Peppy starts it."

And yeah, its definitely suspicious and weird. But the Oedipus complex normally comes with jealousy or resentment towards the other parent.

Oedipus complex, in psychoanalytic theory, a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a concomitant sense of rivalry with the parent of the same sex; a crucial stage in the normal developmental process. Sigmund Freud introduced the concept in his Interpretation of Dreams (1899). The term derives from the Theban hero Oedipus of Greek legend, who unknowingly slew his father and married his mother; its female analogue, the Electra complex, is named for another mythological figure, who helped slay her mother.

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/425451/Oedipus-complex

And given how Fox seemed to care about his dad through this, it kinda made that a little out of the question to me..

That Luke and Leia thing is interesting! It would work better if she was his sister though!

And what happens between fox's dad and her then ? Do they just move on, or form a creepy old/young couple ? :-P

But, what about Fara's father, wouldn't he notice she's a clone ?

Maybe I'm thinking too much... XD

It reminds me of one fanfic in which Andross made exact android copies of a few Starfox team members, Slippy, Fox and Fara, and had them take the places of the real ones, to assassinate the others. It was unusual to say the least, but it was kinda interesting! A little oddly implemented though, and it could have been done better but..

Ok, at this rate I see how it will go, but I will add this because I seem the only one actively defending krystal.

but for how I got the ages, sense eye counting comics fbf said Fox is 22, for years after 64 and andross and a few days before adventures, hens 22-26. And the disclaimer depending on were you look

those bashing her seem to say she has a vague and bearly there back story, leaving her vague and mysterious. Wile fara is a well defined character with a simple and kinda boring story, she's been flying sense she was a kid, has a rich dad, is confadant and a little snobish/full of herself. That being said, theres no mystery and she is prity much a rich female falco. You only need one of them around orels it would get dull.

krystal has that mystery to be explored and those answers to find. If you read the into to adventures, it basicly says she was brought her, not her story started there, its just were she endded up. Hinting she already knew how to fly a ship. She was also self confidant enough to go somewere alone. And who wouldnt fall in love with the pwerson that saved you? Whitch would also exsplane partly why she was just a yesman to fox. I know lots of people persoanly that are like that with there significant other. And as for her powers, there just well developed and could do it without Andros's "telacanetic amplifier!"

so in my eyes fara is beter made, but has less story to exsplore

Wile krystal, still resonably designed, but they got lazy wile exsplaning.

Nintendo hasn't been known for its epic story telling skills for this serese in general.

my vote, still strongly Krystal

Oh my god please use a spell check. Please. Please please please please.

Ok, at this rate I see how it will go, but I will add this because I seem the only one actively defending krystal.

You made this topic. Don't get upset when the outcome isn't what you hoped. Also, this is totally not a topic worth being upset over.

but for how I got the ages, sense eye counting comics fbf said Fox is 22, for years after 64 and andross and a few days before adventures, hens 22-26. And the disclaimer depending on were you look

Farewell Beloved Falco was not "a few days" before Adventures, it was a few years. The Dinosaur Planet thing at the end was just a timeskip forward.

Anyway, as for the rest of your post...

Krystal's backstory isn't "mysterious" to make her seem like a more interesting character, it's "mysterious" because of production problems, plotholes, and the writing staff (who, conveniently, remain uncredited) putting less effort into thinking about this than even the worst fanfiction writer has. Anything you take from Krystal's nonexistant backstory to position her as a good character is entirely your headcanon, and you can't objectively state a character as "better" when your entire reasoning for doing so is a subjective interpretation of an aspect of their character that never even comes close to being explained.

And no, Andross's powers were better established than Krystal's--the entire game notes on several beats that Andross has been experimenting with messed-up biotechnology. Krystal just magically has telepathic powers in Assault, which she never had in Adventures. Her powers are mysteriously absent again in Command.

And, again, no. I wouldn't fall in love with the "pwerson" that saved me, because that's not how people work. That's how bad movies work. "Being a yesman to your significant other" is also how unhealthy relationships and unhealthy depictions of relationships work, especially because it's how women are constantly treated in media and it's completely condescending and contributes to the general societal posturing of women as inferior. It's extremely telling that despite all the times Fox has saved him, Falco can ditch the team and do his own thing countless times and he's considered a "cool loner", but the second Krystal does the same she's completely demonized by both the fandom and in-game narrative.

Krystal is a stand-in for every lonely furry player's submissive, useless sextoy waifu and it's horrible, especially given that she was supposed to be a main, well-developed character in Dinosaur Planet before she was perverted into the mess she is now.

It's worth noting that Fara is hardly better than this, it's just the fact that she actually makes sense in the realm of the series instead of being a random inexplicable psychic space princess that people prefer her--she's still treated like a generic love interest.

e: Also why does everyone think Fara is a "spoiled brat"? We know she's rich but she's never actually exceptionally rude to anyone.

Also, @Psycommando:

Well, at that point James was a giant space whale so I think any relationship between them is going to be disturbing, haha. I always saw Fara as being her own person entirely despite being a clone--she's genetically identical to Vixy but she was raised differently and is much younger than Vixy would be so she kind of developed into a different person. That's so far into headcanon territory, but it was something I thought would be fun to explore anyway!

True my spelling is crap. Always has been. And I'm not really upset, I find debate amusing. And this is informative, so knowledge is power let's get strong.

I do have a conclusion though,

fara, she is a good character but there is a lack of mystery without adding real over the top Stories, and sadly isn't Canon (yet)

Krystal, has possibly, Nintendo just needs to give a flying space #<:& about filling the plot out, she can be fixed though.

And we did just have a heated debate about a kids game.

Conclustion.

Both need something to make them better for fox. Neither side really wins. It's all down to you any way

I don't see any "heated" debate here but okay. Anyways you can use a spellcheck browser add-on, it'd just be easier to interpret your points when your spelling is legible :V

Both need something to make them better for fox.

No. They both need something to make them compelling, independent-standing characters with unique plot merit, whether or not they eventually become romantically interested in Fox. It's insanely fucked up that these characters' worth is being measured solely on how Fox can use them. Developing them from that standpoint is the entire reason why they're such bad characters to begin with.

my phones spell check is quite unreliable changing oppening to surgery,

this post as about who fit better as a love interest, not how good they are as individuals. I do like fara, I'm not knocking her down, shes just... not enough, and Krystal has much more room to be more, and more need be done, which could and should be done any way. (ITS A GAME a fun one that is fun to talk about, so take It easy, and if it's easy, pay it again on hard haha)

Fox also suffers from the same issue, though, that makes any idea of a love interest laughable at this point. His character is so stagnant and bland that it doesn't matter who he's with because none of them are interesting enough for it to matter. When Fox and Krystal are developed as actual people who have some semblance of personality, interests, personal goals and life and hobbies outside of Star Fox (and it would require Fara to be recanonized), then their relationships could be elaborated on because then we'd actually have a reason to see them together outside of simple plot contrivance.

This topic is like watching a train wreck.

Also I love how Xi here has arbitrarily decided to place votes wherever he thinks they're most appropriate instead of actually having a poll made, leading to a sudden upset victory for Krystal when he decides that three of the apparent Fara votes now don't count.

Seems totes legit.

Yep, its not at all legit, mis(?) Xortberg.

This pole was a part of a simple social exsparament.

it simulated, poor planning, rushed desitions, stubberness to a fixed idea, and over all bad fallow through.

we as fans of this series have seen this slowly destroy it, but we can't let it. Nintendo must hear us and listen for once.

thank you all for posting, I did find it interesting. And thank you for not letting me get away with anything. Again thank you. (Begun the roasting I will have undoubtedly brought on myself)
