CrypticQuery
The same production company behind the upcoming Ratchet and Clank movie [slated for a 2015 release] will also be working on a Sly Cooper feature film. A trailer has been released and a posting over at PlaystationBlog has gone up. The film is set for a 2016 release. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/01/28/sly-cooper-animated-film-revealed/ ------------------------------------------------------ Notes: -That is not Kevin Miller doing the voice of Sly in the trailer. Matt Olsen seems to have returned as Bentley and Chris Murphy as Murray, but not having Kevin Miller is a significant shortcoming. Here's hoping he'll do the acting for the actual film. -The animation is actually quite good, but the character designs are somewhat off-putting. I love the scenery and the fluidity of the animation itself, but I wish they character design was based more on the games iterations. Murray looks like he was hit by an eighteen-wheeler, for example. I don't mind Sly and Bentley's so much. Take the example in my signature though; a cartoony style could do wonders. -I'm not sure who is handling the writing, but the movie's storyline might be based off of the first Sly Cooper game if the information I've found is correct. Not bad. Here's hoping this leads to a wider audience and more games in the future. Sony is making some intriguing choices with their IPs, that's for sure. [For the record, the Ratchet and Clank movie is being written by TJ Fixman - he's done all of the Ratchet and Clank: Future games and is quite capable.] -Why does Sly's cane's staff appear to be a tree-branch or something of the sort? In the games and lore it has always been polished/finished, standard wood. -The police cars at the end are based off of Ford Crown Victorias. They have lightbars resembling older MARS or Federal Signal TwinBeacon/VisiBar products. This I like. -Again, the lack of Kevin Miller is especially off-putting. Here he is in the animated cartoon that went along with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time's release. He is acting as Sly in here [and all of the games]. ------------------------------------------------------ Otherwise though, I am cautiously optimistic. Provided that the director isn't brain-dead and follows the original game's story relatively well, and that the proper voice cast returns, this could surely be interesting! The animation is great, I'm sure the character designs will eventually grow on me [provided they "fix" Murray and don't lobotomize anyone else], and I am quite excited. ------------------------------------------------------ Edit: Evidently Kevin Munroe is directing. He's most notably responsible for TMNT [the 2007 animated film]. I'm not sure how I feel about this...
Dr. Orange
I say. Fabulous! Granted I was never able to do a full play-through of all the games because lack of PS systems, but I do have some time invested and I make it up with the two comic books. If they just did a whole movie in the 2D animation of the second clip I'd be fine but they're pulling the full 3D treatment. But yeah the voice might not be the same but the guy still sounds near the same. The film isn't out I can't judge yet. And knowing Sony the animation will be some of the best. But Sly's goatee isn't long enough or that noticeable as in the game/short. I get they can't get the cheek puffs but, come on, at least get the goatee. Bentley and Murray look cool. And I agree Crazy, Murray looks ... I don't know something is bugging me. The staff still looks kickin'. The wood carved look gives a majestic feel, if you will. What really gets me is that I didn't see any 3D animation of Carmelita. She's like ... yeah. Can't get over the red lipstick. It's just not possible.
Drasiana
This looks great. Also an animation company dedicated to movies about fuzzy video game protagonists? Time to cross my fingers...
Vy'drach
They seem to have gotten the character personalities pretty good, from what I see.
CrypticQuery
They seem to have gotten the character personalities pretty good, from what I see. It certainly seems that way. I'm curious how much input the studios that worked on the games have regarding the movie. I'm still somewhat curious as to why they'd up and replace the main voice actor for the series while keeping the supporting actors the same, however. Their Ratchet and Clank movie has the same voice cast - it just seems as if they replaced Kevin Miller for no reason seeing as he stated he was never contacted on his Facebook page. Fedora
The VA didn't bother me as much as I thought it would He does an alright job as Sly though I will attest that he is no Kevin Miller. Kinda funny for me to say that. I didn't recognize him at first when I played Thieves in Time. I thought they got someone different for a short while. But actually having a different VA this time around makes it much more obvious. The designs all look weird to me. I'm used to the Saturday Morning Cartoon aesthetic the games have. Seeing the realism here throws me off. I mean, Bentley actually has eyeballs?! Who woulda thunk it?! Plus, it's very, very, very, very strange for me to see them wearing pants. Sly's design seems to be fairly close to his video game appearance. The colors, the cap, he's still reminiscent of... I dunno a Beagle Boy or some other stereotypical criminal. He doesn't seem to be wearing a mask. I'm OK with that somewhat. I mean, he has one built-in! But on the other hand, the fact that he wore a mask over a "mask" was one of the subtle quirks I liked about the games.. I do have some issue with his face though. Nothing professional mind you. It just looks more......punchable. Like, I want to sock it to him for some reason. On the other hand though, he is supposed to be a magnificent bastard in some respects with all the improvising and smoothness. Bentley. Ah.... Well, he has eyes! He really reminded more of his appearance from Band of Thieves more than recent games. I dunno anything about the story so it could mean that this takes place before Band of Thieves. Or the designer really liked the pith helmet. I know I did. ANd funny that Crazy mentioned that the director also did TMNT (2007) cause Bentley's design did remind me of the Turtles somewhat. Glad to see his dulcet tones haven't changed much. Anybody wonder if he's wearing pants? And if he is, how do you animate pants on a turtle? Murray looks like...... *sigh* How do I go about this? I don't think he's hideous but he certainly is a far cry from his game designs. He looks kinda like a stereotypical "guido" with the wifebeater and the discoloration on his back that looks like a sunburn. I also miss the goggles on the mask but I do like the luchador mask in it's stead. It's just not as classic as the hood n' goggles. My last complaint (albeit small) is that Sly's Cane makes a heckuva lotta noise. It did ring on occasion in the games but not like it does here where practically every other motion makes it ring. Is the hook hollow or something? And I do also have to wonder why the shaft is unfinished wood. I didn't notice until I read Crazy's post granted, but now that I notice it it just sticks out at me. Also, now taking bets for taking bets for whop they get to voice Carmelita this time around! Side bets for whether her VA will bother with the accent, which accent if they do and whether or not they put her in a miniskirt again also available! (I mean seriously, the miniskirt was a bit of a "Why?" thing with me. Especially since I remember Carmelita's main trait (aside from her propensity for comically-oversized firearms stun guns) was her super jump abilities) Wellp, I must say that I am looking forward to watching this. It looks decent so far and hopefully it'll get even better. I do hope that the move inspires more games or comics or something. That's all for now!
CrypticQuery
The VA didn't bother me as much as I thought it would He does an alright job as Sly though I will attest that he is no Kevin Miller. Kinda funny for me to say that. I didn't recognize him at first when I played Thieves in Time. I thought they got someone different for a short while. But actually having a different VA this time around makes it much more obvious. Fan outcry on their Facebook page is certainly prevalent regarding the lack of Kevin Miller, to the point in which they announced that the current casting wasn't final. I hope that they offer him the position, and the oddity of Thieves in Time could be chalked up to the partially awkward writing on Sanzaru's part. It's like Otacon from Metal Gear Solid; in the PS1 version he had opaque glasses and in The Twin Snakes on Gamecube they were clear. Certainly off-putting at first, but easy to adjust to. The pants are probably there to avoid pissing off moral guardians; I assume that Sanzaru didn't give a shit about that with the belly-dancing scene from Thieves in Time. The realistic style is something I don't mind - though I do feel as if a cartoony or comic book like rendition would be great.e. Sly's design seems to be fairly close to his video game appearance. It looks smooshed together if you'll pardon the simplicity of that description, ha. I agree in regards to Bentley - I think that the movie will use the first game as a story guideline, though I expect deviations here and there. The parkour shots in the trailer as well as Bentley's appearance are notably reminiscent of TMNT [2007]. Murray's current look is likely to provide ample nightmare fuel in the future. The aviator hood/goggle combo is something that will be missed, though being that the film is so early into production perhaps they will review fan feedback as they did with voice actors above. My last complaint (albeit small) is that Sly's Cane makes a heckuva lotta noise. It did ring on occasion in the games but not like it does here where practically every other motion makes it ring. I can't comment on the noise-production levels of the cane, but the finished wood handle looks so much nicer as opposed to the random tree-bark thing they have now. If the cane has been passed down among generations then I'd assume it would look a little bit nicer. Imagining them cast Kevin Miller as Carmelita would be the funniest upset in the history of game-to-movie adaptations, but all jokes aside I am curious as to whether or not they'll use a VA from one of the games or go with someone completely different. I don't understand the choice of the miniskirt in Thieves in Time either; the tights were more functional and nicer looking.

CrypticQuery
A movie? But I haven't even played the games yet... Don't worry, you have until 2016. Both The Sly Collection and Thieves in Time are in the $15-$20 range on Amazon, and you most certainly will not regret the investment.

CrypticQuery
Yeah, I've had the collection for some time now, just never got around to playing it like the billions of other games in my collection... At least you have a set deadline now - perhaps that'll provide some motivation. Now if only the same could be said of my painfully large Steam backlog... Snys93
I'll go see it, though I doubt it'll make it to the academy awards as much the Ratchet and Clank movie, I will see it anyway.
Emiko Gale
I haven't even played the games (I wish I could though because they remind me of Starfox.) and yet I am pumped to see this.
CrypticQuery
Good to hear; let's hope that this rakes in a decent profit so that other, similar projects may get a greenlight. The games are fantastic for that matter.
AlGore'sleftshoe
to be honest, I do NOT like the way the 3D animation looks, the characters look seriously...off, but the voice acting still makes me laugh, and the characters are spot on. As for that one animated Promo; I really liked the animation style, it looked perfect for the style of Sly Cooper. reminds me of that Japanese cutscene in the very first Sly Cooper game. The Murray approves!! I hope that 3D character design is early and subject to change, because the way they looked there just bugs me.

Well would if what I wanted to post relates to that subject? I don't want to make a whole new subject unless I absolutely have to, also, that's what I was TOLD to do... also, I just wanted to join this discussion, at least to say one little thing. CrypticQuery
Avoiding threads that haven't been posted in in awhile is a good idea, but seeing as the movie will likely receive updates soon if the 2016 release is still planned for I'll leave the thread open. I agree on the note that the 3D animation takes some getting used to, especially when 2D animation has been used throughout the series to much fanfare. Time will tell!
