So, what makes Command so much worse than Adventures and Assault?

Recommended Posts

Giladen

Plot? Adventures has Andross hijacking General Scales (whose master plan is under-explained), Krystal being in a crystal (HAR! HAR!) for most of the game, "NO BLASTER BUT STAFF ALLOWED!", etc. Assault has Pirates Who Don't Do Anything Star Wolf (with their return and at least Leon going from a cyborg to not being unexplained), Fox needed the help of a bunch of other characters to remember to blow up the robot bug queen, Krystal's asspulled telepathy, etc.

Mechanics? Sure, the flying parts are only in all-range mode where you largely go around blowing up missiles, but how is that any worse than doing fetch quests for so many prehistoric animals or shooting hatchers?

To be honest, if it weren't the story and controls, Command would be just average-mediocre at best. People just give it a lot of shit for the former reason.

Yeah, but story line and controls are half a game. On top of a copy and pasted plot (Fox and crew save Lylat from X threat) they also (to me) ruined some of the characters. They turned Krystal into a whiney bitch and Fox into a desperate crybaby. Command single handedly made me hate my favorite character, Panther, who Assault made me love. Not to mention like 6 of the 9 endings were garbage. I would play Assault and Adventures over Command anyday.

I don't see how that's any worse than how they were in Assault. Fox was already boring and bland when it came to personality and Krystal was a typical love interest and damsel in distress.

Definitely the story is what did it for me. Adventures' story may have been a bit mediocre, but there's a difference between mediocre and a mash-up of DeviantArt fanfiction rejects. Plus on top of that the controls were blegh. Assault, was fun. Adventures, was fun. Command, was not fun on top of a grouping of plots that made you want to tear your eyes out.

1. This just in: Assault and Adventures didn't have Fox and crew save Lylat from X threat.

2. Krystal was minor at best in Adventures AND Assault. Krystal actually was more of a mover and shaker in the plot for once as opposed to being an excuse for Fox to get a staff or a shoehorned SF member who brought nothing mechanically to the team that wasn't either already covered by somebody else or wasn't required for access (and plotwise ended up being a hindrance). Fox was a dope in Assault.

Adventures was limited to a single planet, so yeah, Fox and crew just saved a planet in that game (although, didn't Gen. Pepper say something about Sauria's crisis affecting Lylat?). However, in Assault, they stopped a Borg-minded insectoid robotic species from eradicating and/or assimilating all life forms in Lylat. If that's not a "Fox & crew save Lylat from X threat" scenario, I don't know what.

Sorry, but no. Andross flat out said that he was out to destroy the Lylat System in Adventures.

But then, wouldn't this count as a "Fox & crew save Lylat from X threat" story?

I don't think Command was significantly worse than the other games, it was just kind of boring. Some of the story ideas it had were actually pretty good (Star Wolf/Cornerian Army!Krystal and Andross's origin were great), but a lot of the other characters were mishandled (Fox was straight-up unlikable, Wolf was too goofy to take seriously, Katt was completely butchered, why was Andrew a crab, why was Pigma a space cube, why was Pepper put on a bus), and Dash and Amanda were really random inclusions. The art was kind of offputting to me too.

I think it would've been a little better if they'd cut down the number of paths, diversified the levels, and did another pass at some of the script. I liked the strategy mechanic, it just got old pretty quickly, especially after playing through it all nine times.

I'm not really one to pick out the bad things in games, but I guess just this once, the reason Command is worse than Assault and Adventures

is because it had MULTIPLE ENDINGS. I hate games with multiple endings (Excepting Chrono Trigger).

Easy:

Play the Assault, then Command one after the other

See which one makes you want to drown yourself in burning oil the most

I love Adventures even though it deviated from Starfox 64 into a different game entirely It's one of the most fun games on GameCube in my opinion. I didn't like how linear Assault was. I did however like the plot, and a new enemy. (Aparoids) The game was embarrassingly cheesy though. The characters were bland too.

I actually like command. It's not the best game in the world, but It passes time like Tetris. Perfect for passing time at the grandparents place lol. A lot of people don't like command, but I do.

I perfer command over assault.

To tell the truth, the only thing that stinks in Command is the story: you get 9 sucky endings, being one of the 9 chosen based on what you chose in the game. That's just plain stupid! The character style looks a bit awkward, too.

With an exception of those problems, the game is pretty good. An intelligent way to make a flight shooter for a DS. The music is great, good graphics, for a game of that era and for a handheld, people, with the exception of that, Command ain't that bad!

It felt like Command was specifically designed to PISS ME OFF!!!!  :banghead:

So I'm at the store and see it in this DS lite pack thing for 20 dollars (Came with a case, more stylust. But I really only cared about the game)

I plug it in, watch the intro, then get thrown into the game. First, I see the nudered cornarian assault carrier (I'm still not calling that the great fox 2, Saving Sauria in assault gave them enough money to re-build the great fox into that sleek design, rebuild the Ar-wings to be sleek and better, and even buy a new one for Krystal. And even upgrade the land master. But you're telling me that saving Sauria, saving the capitol, saving the general, saving the lylat system (And probably the universe) BARELY got them enough money to buy a stripped Cornarian assualt carrier??????

So that was problem 1 I had with this game. Problem 2 was the turn counter... There is NOTHING I hate more than time limits in a game. But I gave it a chance, I thought "Maybe the battles its self are handled better... Even know the previous Ar-wings all had pretty much unlimited fuel. So they somehow also DOWNGRADED the Ar-wings. So I go into a battle and... The battles have a time lilmit... A TIME LIMIT ON A TIME LIMIT!!!!!!!!!!!  My... Worst... Nightmare in a game.

So I thought "Okay, maybe they give enough time." Well even if they do, you still loose moves and if you don't beat the mission within its time limit, you fail and gotta start all over again.

Soooooooooooooooooooooo I fixed my problem because I happened to have an action replay. What code did I use? Infinate time and turns :D :D :D Now I can play this game how a starfox game SHOULD be played.

So I beat it, but my memory is very fuzzy. Like I barely remember the game past the first level, I think that once I beat it, it basically said to beat it again for the real ending (Though I may be getting that mixed up with metroid prim hunters... Another DS game that ruined a otherwise near perfect series to me)

But you know what? All of that was looked past too because I decided that I wanted infinite health. Sooooo I actually played through the game again with infinite time, and unlimited health. So I go through the game again and its STILL not fun. So I just go online and look up the endings and... ... !!!

On to story, it makes no sense. You're telling me that fox will let Krystal go with him to the core of an unknown planet/threat (Right after the rabbit almost died) but Fox didn't want Krystal working with Starfox anymore? And then Falco left because he got jealous of Krystal? Why didn't he get Jealous of Krystal in assault?

Long story short, the story was stupid, the time limits were a ridicules idea, without time limits you get to see just how boring and BSy the game truly is. (Time limits can only hide so much) and I literally only have it for collection purposes.

- Adventures had you solving puzzles and fighting crazy bosses

- Assault had you in the Arwing for a few missions and later on the ground with a variety of enemies to destroy (Plus a beautiful Soundtrack)

- Command had you in all-range mode for the rest of the game  with the same map design (a dull square type map with generic enemies)

Oh and you couldn't change the controls to a button layout...

This is what makes command so much worse then both Assault and Adventures, not to mention these are just a few issues out the many command has

Command was Extremely repetitive the fun for me had worn off in a hour

It also did not help that it was the same square map same objectives and had to do this 9 times for different endings and almost all of them were terrible

Assault and Adventures were enjoyable in their own ways command not so much.

This.

Though I'm sure I'm not the only one that was severely disappointed there was only ONE unlockable character in Assault... And he was overpowered. I prayed desperately for all of Star Wolf, but  my prayers were dashed aside and ground into the dirt for the amusement of the gamegods.

Edit: But I forget myself. This isn't about Assault, this is about Command.

Yeah, concurring with several other fine fellows above, the endings did it in for me. Honestly just didn't seem worth the effort, and I came away from the whole experience in general with a bad taste in my mouth.

Luckily there's always the older titles to run back to for comfort.

Actually there's two unlockable characters in Assault  lol  but at least you unlocked a couple of maps, game modes, and the Wolfen. Too bad its unbalanced

Ah, right, forgot about Peppy. Either way, I feel the point stands: Only one Star Wolf member makes me a sad boy.

I remember reading an article about some hidden codes in Assault depicting  Leon and Panther as unlockable characters. I believe i read this in Arwing-Landing a long time ago so im not sure if this article is still there or if it's completely false

My biggest complaint is the repetitiveness.  Sure, Adventures and Assault were repetitive as well but Command you essentially did the same thing each level.

Also too many tasks were assigned to the touch screen, they could've had an option to customize the controls.

And the music isn't bad, but nothing great either. Easily the worst music in a Starfox game imo.

AFAIK this is true though I'm having trouble finding the original post. Apparently Leon, Panther, and a Cornerian Soldier were intended as playable, and Titania and Zoness were meant to be main campaign levels.

And you know i would not be shocked if this was the Truth Titania was so huge just to be played by 4 people only
