The Next Star Fox Game: Speculation and Ideas III

This thread was due for a reboot again.

This time, though, I have something to start-off with.

Nintendo seems to be in the mood to celebrate franchises with 20+ year histories. Mario, Zelda, and Kirby are getting/have gotten the 20+ year treatment.

Next year, 2013, will be the 20th anniversary of Star Fox. This is pure speculation, but I think this makes it unlikely that we will see a Star Fox title launch with WiiU, but also brings the possibility of a new game in 2013, and possibly a re-release collection of some sort. Thoughts?

Note that this speculation is based solely on Nintendo's anniversary celebrations they've been doing lately, and not on any concrete evidence.

My speculation can be read in my thread, but to summarize it: something more story and character driven, something more gritty, a good balance of Arwing/Landmaster/On-Foot combat, a lengthy campaign, and good multiplayer.

I think they should take the basic Assualt engine layout and just tweek it and fix it up a bit. Some of the problems were that it was on a fixed path instead of the player being able to forge there own unique path like in SF64. I really like the idea of foot missions...However I hope that we can stray away from the "blow this up, then go blow that up" feel...i REALLY want to see some recon and stealth missions because, me thinks, that would add a sexy new flavor to the mix.

Just the potential of a Star Fox game in glorious HD makes me await 2013 with an expectant smile.

Would be nice to see the start of a reboot of the series... the current story is a little shifty as far as quality

I was thinking the same thing about a 20th anniversery release. It would be nice if they released a soundtrack with it like they did with Skyward Sword.

I thought it would be neat if they incorperated newtonian physics into space combat; All range mode would take on a whole new meaning, though asking for that may be a bit much. A detailed cockpit view would also be nice.

Don't mind ground missions, so long as they are done well. I thought about G-diffuser equipped power armor/space suit for ground missions. How about actually combining foot and space combat? EVA missions (EVA means extra-vehicular activity, in other words getting in a space suit and going outside the vehicle, just in case anyone did not know). Perhaps you have to use this power armor to sneak aboard an enemy capital ship or space station, this could tie in with the stealth and recon missions.

For the story and gameplay I would like to see the Cornerian military more involved, in some regards. Perhaps escorting bombers or capital ships, or reinforcements in the form of Cornerian fighters. Competent allied and enemy pilots would be great...

I have only one serious request - for the love of god, make any on foot missions feel more realistic. First person would be nice, and so would movement that feels like you're a living breathing... fox-thing. I hated on foot missions in Assault because they felt so FAKE, and Fox moved like physics didn't apply to him, same with his gun. This would apply to any other situations too (like arwings).

I would desire more involved flight missions akin to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, of varying types with mission objectives (not just "shoot everything in sight because they be bad guys"). I like the suggestion of having the Cornerian military involved more.

And MOAR DRAMA and story/characterization plz.

They should pull a Croteam.

That is Rerelease most the old games in GLORIOUSSOVIETUNION In HD, along with making a prequal and letting other third parties develope the backstory for you.

I'd like to see it somewhat like Assault but with more physics, better graphics, and more realistic. A long campaign with the ability to play as starwolf and see there side of the story. Think if they did that with the original starfox assault 10 missions as starfox and 10 missions as starwolf. In assault you were shooting everything, I want to see something like defending transports or building from the enemy and fighting alongside the Cornerian military, and think of fighting between two destroyers locked in a broadside battle as you chase someone though the hail of laser fire. I would also like to see wing riding again that was awesome, and missions with equal use of all weapons and vehicles. When injured or a vehicle is damaged it should effect the gameplay more. Maybe have a mission that starts on the ground and you end up in space or you crashland on the ground and you must sneak into the enemy base and find someway off the planet. Haveing the choice between 1st person and 3rd person, I personaly like 3rd person, but sometimes I like to change it. Last thing it would need a good multiplayer and if it's anything like assault then online is a must.

This is what I hope to expect.

And thank you DZ, I needed to write about a future starfox game. :D

YES! MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! Stop putting Fox's head in the sand and using Krystal as strictly eye candy. Either make your mind up with those two or reboot and try something else. Falco needs to be given a larger role too and shown to have a friendship with Fox that goes a bit past smart ass team member (no homo...)

Begins to slowly put 1 and 1 together, and starts picturing a mix of Star Fox and Splinter Cell

*drools slightly*

I knew something bothered me about the feel of the ground missions and that really summed it up "blow this up, go blow that up". I guess that works overall, but the way it was executed along with the control just felt like it was an afterthought instead of part of the game. I also really miss the choose your own path bit that they completely discarded in Assault. It added to the replay value of the game infinitely, on top of the fact SF64 (the obvious comparison when talking about choosing your path) was just plain challenging in the arcade game sense, Assault was short, and tasted bitter sweet as a result.

Don't mind ground missions, so long as they are done well. I thought about G-diffuser equipped power armor/space suit for ground missions. How about actually combining foot and space combat? Synapse's idea of incorporating a sort of 'ground based' gameplay in space sounds pretty awesome and promising too. Changing up space missions from blowing stuff up all the time would be a welcome change.

But here's to hoping Nintendo keeps up with their tradition and lands Star Fox as a franchise to open up a new system! :D If anyone in their R&D reads what we have to say, I can't imagine them releasing another flop.

Reboot, I will NOT have a sequel to Command.

This being said, I think it should take place in the SF64 timezone. It has a much deeper story so it's no longer, 'Kill Andross beacuse he's a bad guy!' I realy would like to see some of Falco's past. Maybe a flash back to when he was a gangster? I donno. I'd like to keep the Arwing missions pretty much the same as ST64, but maybe add some more objectives to the 'all rage mode'. I'd like to see more ground missions, but with a better physics engine and more objectives, not just destroying target after target, yes it may have been fun, but it got repetitive.

I'd really like to see the Cornerian military more involved, and the rest of StarFox is actuly HELPFULL. :P

And it has Wii U tutch screen controlls. :D

I also want online multiplayer, you desine your own lylateon (Is that how you'd spell it?) and shoot up other players in space on the ground and.... at wallmart? XD sorry I just had to do that.

Anyways, that's what I think the next StarFox should be.

I figured it would be spelled a bit like 'Lylatian'. Being able to design levels sounds like a great idea but I fear for the implementation. About the only game that I found to have an easy, intuitive, and immersive level design was the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games - but I can't see that working out for what you have in mind especially in regards to creating maps for Arwings. Maybe I am just being unimaginative.

I personally see some sort of hope of continuing the game after Command, but at the possible expense of the long lasting fans of the franchise. Continuing from Assault would be just fine with me since I would rather Nintendo not discard Krystal because they couldn't give her a likable enough character for more fans to find appreciation out of her - let the fans have their Krystal, and give the nonfans reason to at least accept her. Also, change the character designs that were depicted in Assault...Fox's design in Assault is like eye rape after seeing the design from Adventures and Krystal needs more modest attire. Everyone else is pretty much OK.

Oh i can see it now...SF in HD with groundbreaking graphics and Stealth Mode Awrings along with a wicked awesome story-line

Being that team starfox is a band of mercinaries i'd really love to see them not play by the rules so much...Maybe even have a level were your infiltrating a cornerian base to take out an unexcepted spy...DO WANT :bday: :bday: :bday:

Oh man I totally misunderstood what you meant originally since reading this...You were talking about building your own avatar and ship? That sounds like it has some promise to building an interesting multiplayer setting on top of level design.

Here's my often copied and pasted wishlist for SFWiiU:

"Single Player: Lotsa levels and branching paths maybe revisit planets for another level or something, about 70% On-rails gameplay (Mostly arwing, some landmaster, few Blue marine levels and possibly a new vehicle? Maybe each member can have their own vehicles like in Command, those were awesome), I'd like Andross back but he died in Adventures I think. So a new similar villain perhaps, maybe Dash Bowman turns into the new Andross? Maybe just a retelling of the original story?

Multiplayer: Co-op campaign, y'know how they are usually 4 pilots together, you could have 4 people playing as Fox, Peppy/Krystal, Falco and Slippy (Or other characters substituting now and then, like Gears 3 for a recent example)

Full online dogfights with lotsa options, modes, maps and stuff, customizable ships and a mode where everyone is in an arwing so basically a classic fight (fair)

That's all I can think of right now, oh, fully orchestrated soundtrack like Assault! =D"

I'll probably revise that one day, but oh well.

  • 2 weeks later...

I pretty much agree with what most people want (other than permanent first person. It makes me motion sick! Please keep it third person, or at least as a option!)

I played a 3DS game called Samurai Warriors that used a play system that I think StarFox could really make work. Each mission had you constantly swaping between up to four characters, each with unique weapons, speed, and attacks, and allowed you to command them to certain points on the map while you weren't controlling them, letting the AI do some work. And said AI was really reliable, so it was really fun.

I'm thinking, since Assault introduced the different play modes, it would be neat to bounce from one to another seemlessly while getting us to handle each team members's unique skills and stats. And maybe to add a touch of difficult and tradition, a character in danger can't be selected until you rescue them.

I'm in agreement with a majority of these opinions--especially on the character development, which I do belkieve that the Star Fox franchise is sort of lacking. for instance, did Fox harbor a hidden anger over the deaths of his parents? and I wouldn't mind learning more about Falco and/or Krystal's origins either. not to mention with the rumor that DZ put up, should it be true we just know the next game will be awesome. Retro studios did give us the awesome that was the Metroid Prime trilogy.

So. all in all: Either a reboot, or, a true Sequel to Assault that ends the story--I'd like to think that Command wasn't part of the whole getup, really. didn't play it, and from what I saw, didn't exactly like it, either. it's basically the Star Fox version of Shadow the Hedgehog IMO.

Personally, I'd like a story that takes place IMMEDIATELY AFTER Assault - something that tells the tale of how Fox and his team get the f**k back to Corneria. Unless I'm much mistaken, those Arwings of theirs didn't look like they had FTL drives, nor are they capable of opening a portal to said homeworld. And for that matter, neither did what was left of the Great Fox.

And on another note, I'd like to see Star Fox go up against someone who looks like a bad guy, but in the end turns out to be something else entirely. As in, not the true enemy.

PLUS, I'd very much prefer a Star Fox story (if not the above) that involves PLAYER CHOICE. As in, a storyline that branches out based on every little thing you do (Do this instead of that, fail on one mission, succeed on another, say one thing to a character in distress or act like a total jackass to them). Perhaps this would take longer to develop, and a lot of problems would be encountered, but as I understand it, "Things worthwhile don't come easy."

Regardless, that is my thoughts on this matter.

Hmmm what would I like to see in the next star fox game.... well to start off how about NOT SO MANY DAMM POT HOLES IN THE STORY LINE. Also how about some character development. I don't really care what they do in the next game story wise but they better start explaining some crap.

some of the users have already stated what I wanna see in a next SF game!!

1. Stealth Mode in Arwings.. (Lord O Donnell's idea)

2. Co-Op Multiplayer.. (Mr-Chris)

3. Superb graphics... (crazyfooinc's idea)

4. On-foot missions, altogether with the Landmaster ones.. (mkajob42)

5. Level Creator (jeth, or sroberson's idea....)

6. Player Character choice (Star_Dragon's idea)

7 A. If it's on a portable, better touch screen controls (... jeth's? )

7 B. Good story. (Don't we all want this now? :-P )

I'm actually not that huge of a fan of the level creator idea :-P ...But then that's mostly because I am just not envisioning it very well and I usually am terrible at custom maps. I could see it work out in multiplayer if it was an addition to the game instead of the main attraction/gimmick. I suppose in an "official" capacity, I side with a few here, that the game needs to not be linear (oh for the love of anything good please don't let it be mindlessly linear like Assault!!!), it needs to have some good adventure based gameplay that doesn't feel like Banjo Kazooie meets Legends of Zelda ripoff (loved Adventures, but gotta admit it bothers me realizing that), and the graphics need a serious facelift from Assault. Its 2012 for video game's sake, StarFox characters need to have fur and some high definition explosions with intense scenery. BTW, there was an update on the main page of SF-O regarding more rumors being leaked about an upcoming StarFox game. Figured I would do a public service announcement just in case.

P.S. No writing off Krystal...if they do, then they need to bring in Fara, Fay, and/or Miyu just to freshen characters up and start over with a reboot on a Fox X (insert character name) relationship if they want to do that. Or better yet, start bringing in non-canon characters anyways and keep Krystal just for the fun of it. Bonus points to the company who can also figure out how to gracefully tie in James McCloud.

P.P.S. If necessary to keep Fox and friends from aging too quickly for more games to be made...Go back in time and write games about the filler times between games. Farewell Beloved Falco would be an awesome time to build a game out of in Adventures style

I don't know, I wasn't to crazy about the Farewell Beloved Falco ending ( but then again who was crazy about ANY of the Command endings). If their going to base the next game off Command then I think they should use endings 1 or 3. I would prefer to see ending 3 just because it spices things up a bit. Also, I don't think they should just " write off " Krystal. She has potential and is a good character. She can be more then just a sex object.

Also, I don't think they should just " write off " Krystal. She has potential and is a good character. She can be more then just a sex object.

It honestly wouldn't be hard to fix the sex object issue...Quit giving her retarded outfits. Not complaining about the original outfit in Adventures because it was kind of part of the whole game setting and I do enjoy the eye candy, but seriously, when you become a legitimate mercenary piloting a ship in the best team in the entire galaxy, you don't need the tightest and impractically fitted outfit then design the outfit so its basically like blue body paint with a strange looking bra that just accentuates the fact that she is a girl. In designing an actual outfit that is more modest and functional it could shed the issue of everyone seeing her as just furry bait and someone they can actually relate to being in a mercenary group.

But I agree, she needs to take some part in the game if there isn't a reboot. Even with Command there are chances to keep her and continue the story (Note, I have not played Command, I have only read over the endings).

Remain part of StarWolf - gives definite tension between interactions between StarFox and StarWolf that makes people sit on the edge of the chair or even a chance of redemption. Helps her shed her previous character issues of not being a 'real' mercenary. I mean how cold-blooded and mercenary like do you get than teaming with StarWolf?

Turn her into Kursed - least she is a bad ass not wrapped around Fox all the time and still allows her to randomly show up mid-game kind of like they did in SF64 to make Fox look bad (hey they bruised his reputation up by allowing Pigma to get away, what? Three times in Assault? Surely Kursed could fly in and cut off StarFox in completing some mission and let her make some snarky comment to Fox)

Keep Fox X Krystal - honestly if one continues after Command this might be the most awkward to implement.

But hey if you want to discard Command and go from Assault, then the sky is the limit for her in the game. I just lately don't feel like the franchise has that purposefully of a direction to go without Command setting the scene for Venom to become a legitimate threat again. Starting after Assault to me feels like we are setting up another impersonal feeling galaxy wide catastrophe.

(Another wish - if Fox is put in another "Adventures"-esque situation of being on foot - it would be cool to give him a few of the abilities he has in Super Smash Bros. The fighting would definitely feel more immerse than tapping 'A' till we randomly are able to kill the walking targets.
