The Epic Orcestra Thread

DZComposer

Recommended Posts

The purpose of this thread is simple: Post Epic Orchestral Music. Epic Choral music and epic wind ensemble also count.

Of course, the gold standard is Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" from his cantata "Carmina Burana:"

However, I'm a fan of Shostakovich, and the intro to Ballet Suite No. 4 is one of the most epic pieces ever written:

Michael Daugherty composed this epic piece for wind ensemble reminiscent of a Film Noir score. Niagra Falls:

However, epicness is not exclusive to the modern period. Mozart put out some epic work, too. Here is Confutatis from Requiem, K. 626:

CHALLENGE MODE: no Two Steps From Hell shit allowed >:C

Personally I'm fond of Verdi's "Anvil Chorus"...

And Respighi's "Festival of Rome"...

Or the Planets Suite by Holst. Here's Jupiter, but Mars is equally amazing:

As much as I don't like Soviet Russia, they had some damned good music.

And now for some I truly adore:

You can not have a epic orchestra thread without Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, just can not be done.

And of course, the top of the top for me, I have a great love for this song for many reasons, and so should you.

(+1 on Carmina Burana, 1812 Overture, Flight of the Bumblebee, Moonlight Sonata, and Ride of the Valkyries.)

Below are some of the classics.  The tunes that everyone has heard before and has no idea what their actual titles are.

I'm not exactly sure if this would qualify as an orchestral piece, but it is epic.

@OneUnder Guy with FNAF avatar posts Toreador.

While the 4th Movement of Beethoven's 9th is a bit of a different kind of epic, you really can't get the full experience with an excript. We're talking about a single movement that runs the length of other composers' entire symphonies.

The conductor really makes this one all that much better.

(The entire composition of William Tell Overture is quite nice, albeit subdued, save for the finale.)

Does opera count? If not, too bad. Doing it anyway.

You had me at organ so I counter organ with organ! (P.S. I love pipe organ music, not counting the Treulich geführt bridal chorus song)

Apparently it was done by Seikou Nagaoka to give the artist their credit, if information is correct.

And I counter back with a player pipe organ. My grandfather's mansion in New York had one of these (or one similar to like it). It was the fucking beans.

(dat retro PowerMac tho)

^ That whole album is just absolutely to die for

There's something so....refreshing about hearing Mozart/Scarlatti on one of these old fortepianos. My aunt studies Baroque/Classical period music, and I've had the pleasure of hearing/playing one in person. All the little trills and runs in Mozart's music that are so damn hard on modern pianos are almost effortless on these early pianos, since the keys are so incredibly light. Not to mention, the thin sound really just tickles your ear and puts a big ol' grin on your face.
