Zero's Music

Recommended Posts

Alright, I finished my first playthrough (well, first route through the game, I haven't seen everything yet!) of Zero last night. Holding my opinions back for now (Hint: I loved it), can we talk about how absolutely fantastic the soundtrack is for this game? I really enjoyed almost every track in the game, but some of the standout ones for me were Katt's theme, Sector Alpha, and actually the Mission Complete theme. Nintendo/Platinum did an absolutely wonderful job on this one.

I admit the music is beautiful. I think I have spent 20 minutes just listening to the Menu music. lol

I loved the ending credits music, how it mixed SF64's credits music with the new SFZ theme. I also love how Hajime Hirasawa's theme pops-up all over the place in level BGMs.

They got some really good composers on the game, Hiroshi Yamaguchi & Rei Kondoh are such a good team.

It really is amazing, probably my favourite Star Fox Soundtrack. Also, I'm probably alone in thinking this but Zoness's music reminds me of the Firefly Soundtrack (you know, the old 2002 show that got cancelled?)

I always wished for a more 'dramatic' music in a StarFox game, as it fits so well and now listening to the Zero score..I couldn't be happier. It is such a nice mix between dramatic/tense - action and more relaxing music.

I'm reminded so much of Star Wars, especially with the Area 3 and Sector Beta music.

I'm clawing at youtube waiting for someone to post the game's OST so I can go back and listen to it all again: there's a lot of the music you miss when you've got that gamepad blasting at full volume so you can hear the dialogue (and lasers. Lots of lasers.)

Corneria and the new Map theme are both ranking high with me right now. Thats subject to change once I get a chance to sit down and actually listen to more of the tracks.

People have uploaded some of the tracks, not all of 'em.

The game's been out for what, 3 days? I'm surprised even that much as been done already.

EDIT: scratch everything I just said,  found most of 'em already:

Double EDIT: Katt's theme has a meow at the end now... I don't know how to feel about this.

The Area 3 theme... oh my goodness the Area 3 theme... it's so damn epic!

Spoiler

If you complete Arcade mode, there's a sound test mode, where you can listen to the tracks and view models from in-game.

Just listened to 'Sector Alpha - Inside the Salvadora' and I get a nostalgic StarFox/StarFox 2 vibe from it. Going to be one of my favourites, that is for sure.

This would make excellent multiplayer battle results music if Zero gets a sequel. Also love the usage of the SF1 theme in this.

My only disappointment is that after all of the teasing of that old theme in various BGMs, we never got to hear it in all its glory in the credits music.

I'm wit you on that. While the end credits theme is great, it feels a little off to me. Myabe its because the new theme isn't really as versitile as the 64/SNES one. Btw, I've got a complete rip of the music if you need it. I've heard that not every piece of music is featured in the Sound Test.

Where did you get this rip?

Final Fantasy Shrine Forum, pretty much a haven for unreleased music for film, TV and video games. You need an account to access links, but its worth it! The only problem is that the rip I downloaded wasn't tagged, i.e. no titles or track info, just the codes from the game.

You know, I think some of the music has other influences besides Star Fox.  Like the theme for Corridor of Illusion.  I'm getting one very Star Trek TNG/DS9/VOY and ENT feel from it, at least, with anything Dennis McCarthy worked on.  Could just be me though.  Fortuna: Primordial Forest also seems to have a feel like one of the more eerie themes used in Star Trek.  Of course, by this time I've listened to the music several times, and each time I listen to the ones that I think have a Star Trek feel to them that is similar to a track Jerry Goldsmith or Dennis McCarthy made, the feeling just gets stronger.  Again, could just be me.  But if so, that's not a bad thing, Star Trek is known for having good music, so Star Fox music having some influence from the Final Frontier can only be a good thing.

Of course, there are infact a few tracks that seem to take inspiration from SFAd.  Like Area 3: Neighboring Space.  It sounds like it came right out of SFAd.

Finally, that Gigarilla, the track sounds like it could have been right at home in SF64, enough so I'd love to hear someone take on the challenge of composing it exclusively on the sound chip of the  Nintendo 64.  Also strangely has a few bits that sound to me like it's influenced yet again by Star Trek.

Edit: Oh yeah, and that music for Sector Omega sounds like it'd fit in a Poke'mon game, and has some Smash Bros. influence as well.

I am so disappointed they didn't orchestrate this music for the Corridor of Illusion.

Actually, maybe they kind of did.  It could be just me, but the two tracks(Dangerous Territory and Corridor of Illusion) sound an awful lot alike...

I need to be more active on this forum, and now that I can finally login I will be!
But- I do have one thing that i'm curious about. Has anyone attempted to actually look into the internal files of Zero for Audio clips, Textures,  models, etc?
I can hardly find anything related to that myself. And feel like it'd be a neat project to do.
Keep in mind that I don't wanna do this to widely distribute the assets. This is more of a "How hard of a task can this really be?" Kind of deal.
Just more of something that would be neat I guess.

Having discovered the CDs with the full osts, has there been any attempt at ripping the full soundtracks with flac/scans? These are super expensive and seemingly hard to get, surely someone musta been frustrated by this...

Jazzstep, despite what dubstep fans will tell you, is a kind of drum and bass with a jazz influence. It came earlier than the related liquid funk genre. Jazzstep was created and popularized around the 1990's to roughly the year 2000, whereas liquid funk came around or after 2000 and began to supplant jazzstep. As far as I know, jazzstep isn't produced anymore. And I know that all you'll get from searching Google for "jazzstep" is dubstep and all you'll get from searching Google for "jazzy drum and bass" (or the similar term "jazz and bass") are of the more recent liquid funk productions.
So I was tired of looking up "jazzstep" only to find either dubstep or liquid funk tracks and one day I decided to make a YouTube playlist of known jazzstep pieces.
Until today there was only one track, but thanks to Rateyourmusic and Discogs I've added more. Both the RYM and Discogs finds are massive and the playlist is thus incomplete so far.
But here's what I have right now!
