Upcoming Plans

Here's where we can discuss the upcoming potential activities for the site. Below, I detail what I personally plan, but of course any of it is subject to change based on your suggestions.

So, while I was gone, I renewed our hosting with GoDaddy. We are good for a little under 6 more months of hosting. This will get us to Summer, when I will have more time, and hopefully DZ will too. At which point, we are seriously considering moving to a new host. I've discussed our situation with Eggman of the KLA, who was in the same situation as us (a slow forum running on GoDaddy). He moved to Dreamhost and has had little problems sense. His database was over 6 times larger than ours, yet GoDaddy is still choking on our very modest 35 MB database (KLA's is about 200 MB). If there are no objections, I would like to move us to Dreamhost over the summer. They have a much better system all around and make things easier for a mild increase in price per year. The transition will be relatively painless since Eggman has offered to provide assistance if needed. The downtime for the forums should be no more than a day, and the site itself should experience no more than an hour or two of downtime.

With the new site, we will add new content. I'm in position to post major media updates, including new videos, audio clips, and my yet-untapped rather large resource of official Star Fox imagery. To do this, I plan on installing a separate image gallery system, heavily linked to by the site (and forums), but not directly connected. Since little interest has been shown in an forum integrated gallery, we can use a separate gallery for site postings, and allow members to post things by giving you accounts for the image gallery on appropriate request.

DZComposer will likely have time to finish up his PHP-based chat program that we can use for our Star Fox Talk chats. This too will not be integrated directly into the forums, but heavily linked to.

With new content and more features, I would like to request the assistance of a few of our forum members for help with the site upkeep. All you'll have to do is write up a story for a Weekend Fan Creation or article as I give it to you, or if it's some kind of data processing job, just follow my instructions on what to do. Any volunteers can respond to this topic. Work will be on and off and may begin immediately (I have a whole list of things to do).

As you are already aware, we got our first major external affiliate a couple weeks ago, Zelda Dungeon. They are linking back to us as promised. When they are done with their redesign, they will also be giving us a button link (which I created for them today):

Point is, we need more affiliates like this and other Star Fox sites. If you know anyone who owns a gaming site, or if you have a site, please spread the word about our site and post links (but DON'T SPAM!) so we can generate interest.

I would be more than happy to write up articles as you send them to me as long as it isn't too much work, and once I am finished with my Web Page design class, I may be able to help with site upkeep. Just give me the word and I will come to help if and when I can, which I most likely will.

I would like to volunteer to write for the site. I used to write at the website 4inthemorn, wrote reviews for albums and games on a blogger site, wrote more music based stuff on a wordpress blog, and video game based news in a destructoid.com cblog. Most of this was written to a more adult audience so I think it would be interesting to have to keep myself PG to PG-13.

I've begun floating the name of SFO to other large video game sites I frequent. In addition, I will also answer the clarion call for article writing for the site. I will happily tackle anything you've got, Dwight, on almost any deadline.

A fringe benefit of writing for the site on a regular basis is that here on the forums, you will get an icon under your name, and a Staff Writer title. You will also be able to call yourself a staff member (though no forum powers will come of it).
