Coming off the TGS and the first sight of the controller, what are your thoughts?

IMO the controller is looks cool and Nintendo are going in the right direction with design to try and get gamers back to the gaming world.

Any fool can work a remote.

Don't base your opinion solely on the pictures or you WILL be underwhelmed.

The Rev, I think, will finally be the console to put up a serious challenge to the PC for FPS games. Why? 3D motion detection!

"Features at a glance:

* Remote control design: constructed to appeal to a wide variety of potential players

* 3D Pointing: Sensors understand up, down, left, right, forward and backward.

* Tilt Sensitive: Controller can be rotated or rolled from side-to-side.

* Buttons Included: Has a trigger on its backside, face buttons, and a D-Pad.

* Multifunctional: Has an expansion port which can be used with different types of controller peripherals. Analog stick with two trigger buttons planned for left hand.

* Wireless: Totally wire-free. Currently there are no details on the max distance, source or power, or otherwise.

* Rumble Built-in. Included standard in all the controllers. "

Uhm...I find having to have to tilt the freaking controller to move not very appealing....I mean it makes it a whole lot more complex..I mean anolog sticks ok fine. But why do I have to tilt the damn controller to move the character on the screen? and besides having to move one hand in an akward angle while moving the other in an opposite angle is going to get uncomfortable and very hard to adjust to. I mean most gamers will propbably agree it looks like a freakin DVD remote...So now we just cant sit and play? we have to move now? come on I can do better with two analog sticks than I can trying to move hand down or up. I mean the sensitivity would be rediculous on slight jolt and I would like die or screw up real bad...Rumble is standar in all controllers of today anyway...no big deal there...Wireless not bad...As of now I fail to be impressed with this controller seeing how I have to hald half of it in one hand and the other half in another...A very odd and uncomortable setup if you ask me. Just gimme a controller not a DVD remote...plus doesnt that mean you would have to buy an analog stick sepreate when sony and microsoft have 2 standard? not gonna help nintendo at all.

I agree 100% nintendo will probably fall cause of this as well (hopefully they will change it for this reason)

Interview with NOE marketing director sheds more light:

"Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too. [ I like this idea! ]

It's something that's just as true for the DS - not every game uses the DS's unique features. But some multi-platform titles do, like The Sims 2 for example. We hope other developers will do the same and look at ways their multi-platform titles can make use of the Revolution's features. "

 That's going to calm my fears a little. I just hope they include one in the box.

"Eurogamer: Is the freehand-style controller your trump card, or have we got more exciting stuff to look forward to?

Jim Merrick: Let's just say we have more surprises in store. "

There was a demonstration with a point and shoot type game where the game used the 3d movement sensors to work like a light gun [in how the operator uses it, not the way it works] and detect where on screen it was being pointed. They also used it to zoom in and out on screen.

More good info:

Ponder a Starfox game where you use the controller as a flight stick instead of using the analog stick, tilt it in the direction you want the Arwing to go [like a jet, forward wouldnt be acceleration]. You could still use the control stick for aiming your weapon and potentially you fly with one hand and aim with the other.

Dont become bias against it from pictures, read the articles. I know I plan on getting one.

edit;

Also, it was designed to be rotated 90 degrees so you could use it on the classic games that would be available on the 'Virtual Console' download system.

Supposedly, it allows you to use gamecube controllers and memory cards directly on the console.

I suspect the Revolution is just an improved gamecube hardware wise, in the same way PS2 was to the PS for hardware level compatibility. The PS3 look like it will have to emulate the older console because of the Cell processors.

Nintendo is trying to push immersion with control instead of immersion with shiny graphics. I personly like how they seem to be headed away from the typical clich game and moving into something new.

They have done this before, they brought us mainstream Multiple buttons on the face of the controller [NES controller]

I first used a rumble device on the N64

They made wireless controllers mainstream [GameCube wavebird]

The D-Pad! [NES]

and of course... The analog thumbstick. [N64]

I trust that since many of their past innovations have worked out well, that their up coming one will also.

If you have ever watched a non-gamer play Sonic 2 on a gamegear you know how intuitive it seems to them to tilt the device to make sonic roll a bit faster :)

Anyone who isn't sold and signed up for a Revo already will change their minds when they see the new Starfox game.

That will be played using that controller.

This is IGN's mockup. Nintendo has not released an official design for this unit.

NOE's marketing VP did compare it to the GCN controller. I wouldn't be suprised if Ninty's design isn't too much different.

I just hope they don't be assholes and include one in the box.
