There isn't a "best' FPS, there can't and never will be, all of them have their differences and we all have our preferences so you can't really judge what the "best" FPS is.

I agree with Mr. Foxer, but my favourite that comes to mind right now is Duke Nukem 3D. Also because it was the first really controversial game, mostly due to the fact that while most other FPS games at the time had you going through alien facilities or hell itself and such, Duke Nukem was blasting aliens in strip clubs and porn shops, spewing swear words and one liners and tipping strippers all the while. I won't say it's the best FPS because there is no such thing, but it is definitely up there.

I also hold Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and the Team Sabre expansion pack in high regards, mostly due to the near complete realism of it, higher caliber guns are 1 hit kills, bullets drop in all weapons, and the levels are actually massive, no Call of Duty sniping within 100 yards. It's not uncommon for a sniper to be outside of 800 meters. It did have a few balancers however, such as the inability to aim down the iron sights with the light machine guns or the sidearms, since the M60 and M240 fire .308 (or 7.62x51mm if you prefer), making them 1 hit kills. Also wasn't really anything cheap in that game, even the M203 and AT4s, which  had about twice the kill radius of Call of Duty's, and could kill by flying past you (not to mention that you carried six M203 grenades), but even with that, they weren't as cheap as they were in COD for some reason.

Anyway, like Mr. Foxer said, there is no best FPS, each one has it's pros and cons.

Team Sabre is here! What did you need? :P

As cliched as it sounds, Halo and Modern Warfare are both fantastic. Halo is the best, and a console FPS no less. The AI is engaging, the settings varied, the guns are different and the graphics iconic and show that you can have colour and still be serious.

The shooting aspect of MW games is a bit lackluster, as is the game design, but when it comes to mood and getting your blood pumping, none are better, it's mostly story, atmosphere ect, it's flash, but it's good flash. Plus it's the only big name multiplayer game I can stand to play online and the co-op in that is fantastic.

FEAR is another game I keep coming back too. much like Halo, the effective weapons and challenging enemies make the game fun. It's a much more tactical game that has that moment to moment desision making I love in FPS. The horror parts get a bit annoying though.

I loved DF:BHD, I still have it but 'twas on Mac for PPC, now I've got an intel. Ah the memories I have of that game. Artifacts make it unplayable now.
