Public Apologies

OK, there have been a bunch of apology threads lately. Enough that people are starting to get annoyed by them.

So, here is a break-down of when it is OK to post an apology thread, and when it is not.

When TO post a public apology thread:

- When your actions cause a large disruption in the community. Large disruptions are things like drama that cascades into every corner of the board, NOT just derailing one or two threads. This only happens at most once per year.

When NOT TO post a public apology thread:

- Having an unpopular opinion

- You only angered a couple of people. Use PMs or post on their profiles.

- You derailed a thread

- You are leaving the internet "forever" (Welcome Wagon/Time Clock)

Inappropriate apology threads may be locked.

Is this really necessary? In most community sites I've been there has never been this problem due to the core property of those communities respecting opinions, even if that opinion includes something controversial.

May I remind the members of SFO that apology threads are only considered acceptable when an act you have done and wish to apologise for has caused major disruption in the community. If you need to apologise for anything else, I'm sure you can PM the people involved.

Apology threads that are deemed unacceptable can cause unnecessary drama, and will be locked.
