Guest Mr. Nintendo
So apparently, I've been studing the relationships of each character in many games and see how their karma is to each other. We know the simple concept of the hero, the villian and the damsel in distress...but there is more than that, there can be relationships with family members, crewmates and etc. While many characters can be recgonized for their good or evil, there's just one thing that bothers me so much...I just wish I got a explaination from the game developer or company. What bothers me is just relationships that would make you go "Wha? I thought he/she hated *Character* so much." or "He/She just broke the game's relationship!!" I'll provide one example to back this up (I'm sure you have better ones than me.): Dead or Alive (Don't know if many of you are familar with this. And also, I know there are many characters in this game, so I'm only going to explain the characters that play a huge role to the franchise.) Kasumi is the Daughter of Ayame and Shiden, plus the older half-sister of Ayane (My avi) and older brother, Hayate. Ayane is the Daughter of Ayame and Raidou (Why not Shiden you ask? Well, because Raidou raped Ayame and so technilly, he is the dad of Ayane...Shiden is just her parental uncle.), plus the yonger half-sister to Kasumi and the younger cousin to Hayate. At that time Ayane and Kasumi were kids, they didn't know they both were related to each other so they were considered "Friends". But the ninja clan saw Ayane as a "Cursed child" and thus, she was never to be near Kasumi ever again because Kasumi was being treated like a princess and for a fact nobody seems to give a shit about Ayane, not even her mother. Some days after Raidou and Hayate had a battle, Ayane learned the true form of Kasumi by Genra (Leader of the clan and who Ayane claims "The greatest person to be around.) and was ordered to kill Kasumi because after Hayate suffered a bad concussion from Raidou and later being fixed up by Kasumi, she went to the first DOA tournament to kill Raidou for what he did to Hayate. By leaving the secretive ninja clan and placing them in danger of being discovered, she was labelled a "Runaway shinobi" (In other words, a traitor.). Ayane has bumped into Kasumi many times during the DOA tournaments but despite the fight Ayane putted up, Kasumi managed to survive and later see her brother (In the 2nd tournament, Hayate recovered but at that time because of his amnesiac nature, he thinks he is Ein.). Now here is where something goes wrong and makes me go: In the 4th DOA tournament, (DOA4) Kasumi managed to fight her clone called "Alpha-152" but it escaped later on. Then the DOA-tec building is about to self-destruct (Cause Helena pressed a button, what else? ) and Kasumi managed to escape out of the building safely but then sees Helena entering the helipad and escaping. Running to go after Helena, Ayane out of nowhere shows up and doesn't let Kasumi pass like this: Try and to take a guess into why Ayane doesn't let Kasumi go after the suspect. Is it... A. Ayane wanted to spare Kasumi's life because it's too dangerous to go back inside. B. Ayane worked with Helena, thus making her and Ayane a criminal. C. No reason. D. None of the above, we will never know. If you guessed D, you are right. It never gets a explaination whatsoever. I can only say their envy and hatred may have abated now that their circumstances have changed; with Ayane the Hajin Mon Master of the Mugen Tenshin clan and Kasumi the runaway shinobi, so who knows? Maybe my question can get answered in the upcoming 3DS game: DOA Dimensions. If you can think of any games that have a relationship screwed up, post it here and explain why you think the relationship seems to be messed up to you. Also if you can, provide a example from a cutscene or whatever.
Vy'drach
Don't really know if this counts, but in the Mortal Kombat games, most people assumed Sub-Zero was the "Good guy" and that Scorpion was the "Bad guy." But actually according to the story, Bi-Han (the original Sub-Zero) killed Scorpion, and then the Shirai Ryu (Scorpion's clan) were killed by Quan Chi as payment to the Lin Kuei (Sub-Zero's clan) for services rendered, as the Lin Kuei despised the Shirai Ryu. In life, when Bi-Han was Sub-Zero, he was credited as the most cunning thief and assassin of the Lin Kuei. Some time ago, he and his clan were hired by the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi to retrieve an ancient scroll in a Shaolin temple. However, unknown to Sub-Zero, Quan Chi also hired the Japanese ninja, Hanzo Hasashi - codename Scorpion - of the Shirai Ryu clan, and the Lin Kuei's ancient rivals, for the same task in case Sub-Zero failed. Sub-Zero fought past the Shaolin monks and obstacles guarding the temple where the scroll was held. Upon arriving at the chamber where the scroll was contained, Sub-Zero encountered Scorpion. A violent battle for the map ensued with Sub-Zero as the victor and coldly, savagely killing Scorpion. Sub-Zero escaped with the scroll. Sub-Zero returned to the Lin Kuei mountain fortress with the scroll. As compensation, Quan Chi made good on his promise to the Lin Kuei Grandmaster, as well as the absolute and utter destruction of the Shirai Ryu. For Scorpion, Born to the Shirai-ryu Ninja clan, Hanzo Hasashi was among the best shinobi in the clan. He earned the name "Sasori", the Japanese word for "Scorpion" because of his incredible Ninja skills, and his life was blessed with kombat for the glory of his clan's Grand Master. However, when he recieved a mission from the vile necromancer Quan Chi to steal the sacred Map of Elements from the Order of Light's Shaolin Temple, Scorpion was brutally murdered in battle by the Lin Kuei warrior, Sub-Zero. Consequently his family, and his clan were slaughtered by Quan Chi as payment to the Lin Kuei. Scorpion's soul was sent to the Netherrealm, where he laid waste. He fought Sub-Zero again in the Prison of Souls during his damnation, but was beaten again, allowing the Lin Kuei warrior to escape. Two years after being slain by the elder Sub-Zero, Scorpion was resurrected by Quan Chi, returned to Earthrealm, and participated in Shang Tsung's tournament. If he defeated Sub-Zero, he would avenge himself and from what Quan Chi told him, his clan, but if he was defeated again, his soul would be hurled into oblivion. However, it would not be until after Johnny Cage's defeat of Goro that he would catch Sub-Zero unguarded and have his revenge, burning the defeated Lin Kuei. Immediately afterward, he returned to the Netherrealm in an explosion of fire and ash. While in the Netherrealm, Scorpion would catch wind of a new tournament in Outworld, as well as Sub-Zero's participation. Shocked and angered that his murderer somehow returned to life, Scorpion followed his opponent to Shao Kahn's tournament. However, during one of Sub-Zero's battles, he witnessed the Lin Kuei sparing his opponent's life. He would soon learn that this Sub-Zero was not his murderer, but Sub-Zero's younger brother. To atone for slaying his kin, Scorpion vowed to protect Sub-Zero instead. But Sub-Zero would never know this, or the reason behind it. Back to Sub-Zero, about his transformation into Noob Saibot (According to Ed Boon, Noob is the characters name, and Saibot is the shadow clone. Also, Noob Saibot is the reverse of the two creators of MK's last names, Boon and Tobias). When he died in the first Mortal Kombat tournament at the hands of Scorpion, his soul, corrupted by years of violence, descended to the Netherrealm's Fifth Plane. The evil within his soul was unleashed, stripping him of pride, compassion, and everything else "human." He wishes not only to remain in the Netherrealm, but to conquer and rule it. Though he has been seen in the service of conquerors such as Shinnok and Shao Kahn, his ultimate allegiance is to himself.

Robert Monroe
Metroid Other M took the potentially interesting and complicated relationship between Samus and Adam and turned it into some kind of Freudian nightmare that oozed unintentional sexism (and I do not often believe in unintentional sexism or racism), making Samus look pathetic and weak and needing acceptance from Adam and making Adam look like the biggest fucking asshole in the galaxy. Given how they acted in Metroid Fusion, neither of these was supposed to be that way.

I'll make a serious reply once I've been awake for more than 10 minutes... But their relationship isn't messed up, it's fairly normal. See, lemme explain. They meet briefly in a bar roof of an ancient temple and he takes her home. They do it, and Fox keeps her number awkwardly so she can call everyso often. After a year or two they're comfortable enough with their friends with benefits relationship to start going to the next level, but Fox less so. No matter, all it takes is a little while longer for them to get together and be the happiest couple ever until they break up almost immediately after. From here Krystal has three realistic choices: A. come back crying and swearing to make it work, proposing marriage and a kid for incentive to stay whole B. run to the more charming, muscular guy down the street that she's been cheating on Fox with on and off, AKA the Bella Swan approach C. go emo

The fact that Krystal bothered is bad enough, but anyway, the three REAL options she has are these. Go into hiding, Transfer to a combat assignment. or PRAY for an allied invasion. As for Sonic 2006, did Sonic and the Princess start dating when i wasn't looking, what happened? All it was was some tender moments, and the kiss of life, it's a narrative plot. Redeemer
Hahaha, I'm sorry dude, but they are like, identical. They have the exact same face but different hair. And for a messed up relationhip, I think Rinoa and Squall from FF8 are pretty messed up. He like, isn't interested in her for ages until he FINALLY gives in to her constant pestering... And just when he realises that he could have feelings for her, she reveals that she's in love with Seifer? Really, Rinoa? D: That's my opinion anyway. FF had some classic messed up couples. Garnet was a bitch to Zidane and he still wanted in her pants loved her. Cloud had Tifa and Aerith both drooling after him and he never gave a crap until one of them was dead, then he went even more emo that before. As I said. Just my opinion. :P

I have to agree, there was nooo development on Garnet's side at all in that relationship. :T The ending was just all "Oh snap! We forgot to do some character development with these two! They're supposed to be the main couple! Quick, do something!" The character development for Garnet stops after she loses her voice.
Matrilwood
I remember the relationships in the Spyro series where always unstable between games, especially in the field of love interests which seemed to vanish mysteriously at the end of each game. i.e. Hunter x Bianca and Spyro x Ember, the latter of which [Ember] never even appeared in another game after Hero's Tale.(Well ok, Bianca is a mage and Hunter is a total doofus, but still) Them only love interest that pulled through to sequals was Spyro x Cynder, which appeared out of no-where. One moment they're enemies, the next they're the total opposite. There was also the Monkey Island series, in the first two games, Elain (1 of a suspiciously low number of governors in the Caribbean) is irritated by Guybrush Threepwood ("The Mighty Pirate") [i always wanted to say that], then in the 3rd game, she admits her love for him, not too long after, they get engaged. Dark D3s7r0y3r
Dante and Vergil from Devil May Cry. They meet each other a few times, talk casually, then go all out on each other. To top it off, they're BROTHERS. Didn't their parents ever teach them brotherly love? Oh wait...
Sarita
Oooh, I just thought of a pretty good one. Kevin/Shion of Xenosaga. Except I can't tell you why because it is a huge freaking plot spoiler. :T Hmmm. It involves faking someone's death.

Matrilwood
God of War, Kratos is allies with Giya and the other titans, then for absolutely no reason what so ever, he kills them all. It just goes to show how shallow Kratos is as a character.
Shinigami
Sonic 06... This. hell yes. I mean heck, even someone made fun of that one scene in the game before the final boss. thankfully 06 was just one large reset button waiting to be pressed so it never happened.
