Drasiana
Thanks you guys! Yeah, I was going for a stockier, somewhat more cartoony look so she'd both match Fox's SSB-style and look like someone proficient at wielding that staff of hers. I also thought it would look kind of weird if she were using one of the strange-ass bodysuits she wore in Assault and Command so I tried to re-incorporate some of the chunkier, more ancient-looking armor she had in Adventures. Hope it worked out!

CrypticQuery
The amount of expression that you're able to capture in your artwork will never cease to amaze me, Dras. It's almost as if I'm viewing stills from an animated cartoon.
Drasiana
Ahhh, thank you! Night made v<v I've sometimes contemplated studying animation, but I'm not sure if I'd have the patience for it. Doing expressive character drawings is one of my favourite things to do though...

CrypticQuery
I do love seeing different interpretations of characters that seldom appeared; Fara, Miyu, and Fay look great, and I'm quite glad that you went with the pink color-scheme for Katt. Amanda and Lucy's interpretations are better than their pseudo-canon iterations by far.
Ala1n-J
Andrew sketches : I love these sketches. I can read Andrew's character very easily. Well done! Goras baby : Interesting. The Goras we see on Titania is only a Frankenstein-esque creature based on a fossilized specimen. I wonder what they looked like in real life (so to speak). Starfox ladies : Yes! We need more Starfox women! Cool sketches. And funny how Miyu's clothes resemble a bit Mal's from your own The False Tapestry. Also, I don't have a Tumblr yet (I put Tumblr's I like in my browser bookmarks) but I'm going to response to this from your Tumblr : Amanda’s a strawberry poison dart frog now based on a suggestion by ALA1N-J * fangirl hysterical squeak * So glad you took my suggestion! Now I must convert the entire world to my starfox species headcanons! Muuwaahahhahaha!! And next time you mention me, you can give a link to my dA account
Drasiana
Haha, Miyu's clothes do kinda look like his I guess! Though I think her shirt's a bit more armor-like. I wanted to contrast her design with Fay's, who is more curvy and soft, while Miyu is sharper and classy--I guess that's the kind of outfit that comes to mind xD And I'll definitely give a link to your dA! Thanks guys
Ori
The outfits look all great on them. I personally think Fara looks adorable in that shot. :3 I also like how you fixed Amanda and Lucy. They looks a lot more convincing (both anatomy and appearance wise) and actually cute to be honest. .3.
Drasiana
Thanks!! Yeah, Lucy and Amanda kind of got the short end of the stick in that they debuted in the game with the worst art style in the series. It was kind of funny with Amanda, I was trying to redesign her into wearing a wetsuit and stuff because I headcanon her as an environmental activist/researcher on Aquas...then I realized I'd basically just given her her old outfit. It's amazing what character context can do haha.

Ala1n-J
This is great, I like the colours and the atmosphere, Andross's head over Venom, an Arwing and a Wolfen battling, Krystal gazing upon the scenery, the SF crew... Instant favourite! Now, just a few things : - Fox's arm looks weird, it kinda looks too short compared to his torso and its articulation just doesn't look right, like his glove chopped a bit of the elbow or something. - the ships are a bit sloppy, although their visual style matches the rest of the illustration, next time you could secure their shape using an angular lasso and then paint over the zone you've created. Keep up the good work, Dras! Edited June 1, 2014 by Ala1n-J
Drasiana
I don't have an angular lasso in the program I use, so I guess I'll just have to learn how to paint ships that aren't shitty without it! If you have any tips on drawing them that aren't just Photoshop tools, let me know.
Ala1n-J
I don't have an angular lasso in the program I use, so I guess I'll just have to learn how to paint ships that aren't shitty without it! If you have any tips on drawing them that aren't just Photoshop tools, let me know. Ah, sorry. By sloppy I meant that some parts were lacking some hardness to them, so to make the ships feel like they were made of steel. Now looking back at it, I think "sloppy" was too harsh, I want to apologize for my rudeness. Still, I can give some tips. I don't know how you work, but here's this : - On a "ship" layer, use a hard brush in GIMP, or the Pencil in SAI to create the silhouette of your ship, back it up with the eraser to get rid of any part bleeding out; (Protip : zoom in and zoom out to make sure your silhouette is clean) - Still with a hard brush, determine the different parts of the ship (wings, canopy, guns, engine thrust, etc) with colours (or shades of grey if working in B/W). You can even start placing the lighing during that phase. Normally I create a few layers to separate the parts and then clipping them to the silhouette layer, but I can't find a direct equivalent to GIMP and SAI. You can try to separate some parts in different layers, though. (Protip : On GIMP you can lock your aera of work by clicking an icon that stops you from painting the empty zone, then you can work inside your silhouette without fearing of outlining. It works better than selecting the silhouette with a magic wand.) (Protip : On SAI you can select the silhouette with a wand using these parameters (Transparency->Strict and Trans.Diff.->roughly 100) and then you hit the button "Create new layer mask". This mask creates a zone from your selection in which your paint will only affect the white area. In case you create different layers for the parts, you can use that technique on each layer, while selecting the silhouette layer as reference for the mask, so that they all keep the same painting area) - Then the fun begins and you can add all the details that you want. I'll let you handle shadows and light as you usually do. Hope this can be of any help! I wish I could help about perspective, but I don't know GIMP or SAI enough to tell you a few tricks on that. Again, I apologize if I sounded rude in my previous comment, it wasn't my intention.
Drasiana
This is a good post. It should actually be its own thread or something so other people can benefit from it too. Someone was asking for a Star Fox drawing tutorial recently, maybe there should be a tutorial sticky or something? Unless I'm misreading the steps, it is pretty much exactly how I painted them, except I'm not sure what tool you mean by the "Pencil"? The pencil tool I have is really sketchy-looking...would that be more accurately a Pen on 100% opacity, or the Binary tool? e: For SAI, I mean.
Ala1n-J
The pencil is basically a tool that, normally, doesn't react like the brush, as it's supposed to make hard strokes (at least it does in PS). But I guess a modified brush can do the job just fine. Again, I'm so used to PS that I consider tools to work the same from one software to the other. I guess I could give some tutorials, but this one was rushed, considering I had to find techniques to make a similar result to what I do on PS without some of its tools. I also saw that topic with someone asking for Starfox tutorials. I didn't have time yet to write a comment with some tricks for drawings in general. Most of the SF-specific tutorials are basically tracing promotial art rather than building the character from scratch. But I like the idea of creating some tutorials around it. Unless I'm misreading the steps, it is pretty much exactly how I painted them Well then, I feel like I've been nitpicking at some details that didn't need that. I've always visualised the arwings with sharp edges. Looking back at your illustration, I see that you work a lot with paint-like brush strokes. Which is cool and fine, but it doesn't give sharp lines, and I think that's what have been ticking me. In the end, the technique is good, it's me misreading an artstyle. I just hope you didn't find my first comment too harsh...
Drasiana
I think the SAI equivalent to PS's Pencil is the Binary tool, but I don't like using it because it doesn't work with pressure sensitivity for some reason. A 100% hardness Pen might work though. It could be what you said about style, though I don't draw ships very often anyways so it could be a technique issue as well. I'll keep it in mind if I want to draw ships again. I also recorded the first-half painting this in Livestream, if you wanted to see the general process. It's like 2hrs long so you'll want to skip around a bit haha: link
DZComposer
Again, I'm so used to PS that I consider tools to work the same from one software to the other. That can get you in trouble.I remember when I first started playing with photoshop and realized how different it was from any other image editor I have ever used.
