Rik McCloud
Friend of mine recently got me a Sega Dreamcast for my birthday. It is something I'd been hankering after for a while and so when I opened the box, I was stunned. After the joy of finding out about this amazing gift, when I went to play it, I found it had an intermittent problem where it would power on but no audio or video was displayed. I have tried using different cables and opened up the Dreamcast and cleaned parts which I thought were causing the problem but it now refuses to show any pictures at all. If any of you have any suggestions as to what the problem might be, I'd really appreciate it.
Guest Mr. Nintendo
Maybe it has to do with your TV or the Dreamcast doesn't function with the pictures very well. I had a similar problem like this awhile back, only my Dreamcast would shut off by itself after about 5-10 minutes of gameplay. (Widely depends on what game I am playing.) Random resetting is apparently cured by cleaning and checking the contacts for the power inside the console. And I've tried the original RF lead, Sega Dreamcast Scart lead and S-Video lead and all three suffer the same problems. Even the RF lead did the same on a CRT TV. Starting to think the motherboard is screwed.
Guest Mr. Nintendo
Starting to think the motherboard is screwed. Thats all I can say. Besides, most Dreamcasts don't function well as they used to on the day of their release.

sjrathbun812
That's to bad man...Sorry, but I can't really recommend anything other than the console might just be old and there's nothing you can do about it. I've never owned one either, so I don't really know how it works, really.
DZComposer
Look for loose solder joints. Intermittent problems like that indicate loose connections. Loose solder joints can be easy to fix if they're not surface mount. If you've never soldered before, it isn't hard, and you can get some solder, desoldering wick, and a soldering iron from Radio Shack for about $50.
