Simple question, do you pirate anything at all? Music, TV, Games, whatever. Emulators of old consoles don't count, but anything still new on a shop shelf does.

Remember the board rules, also don't judge or start flaming.

I ask because I saw a trend on one site where people would say they pirated until they became finacially secure/responcible, at which point they 'went lagit'. I wonder if this trend is common elsewhere.

I don't pirate anything. The only thing I use is old emulators for NES/SNES (As long as it isn't on the Virtual Console. Then I buy it. :D)

I listen to music on YouTube so I don't need to pirate music at all. Hahaha.

Although I would be lying if I said I didn't pirate in my life. When I was younger I did pirate music. Even then it was my favourite songs from video games. XD

I'm pretty sure everyone has to some degree. If you can download a picture for an avatar, you can pirate. It's only a google search away.

However it also has different extents that different people consider piracy. For example, you have the pirates who torrent fallout 3 on release, and then you have those that emulate some SNES because they belonged to an era long since past, and unobtainable.

Also, any English speaking Touhou player is a pirate too, as the games are not digitally distributed and can only be legitimately bought in comic stores in Japan, so there's that too.

Never heard of this Touhou thing, but yeah pirating seems to mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

Touhou is a japanese games developer who makes bullet hell shooters. A genre Charlie Brooker describes as "Looking like a firework display being sick.".

They have a small, dedicated fanbase. In most cases it is possible to import them or get them from download services.

Small correction: touhou is the series name. The developer is Team Shanghai Alice which consists of one man.

And for the record, the series is has a pretty large fanbase. Maybe not Pony big, but around that league.

Off topic, but that depends. By 'pony big' he could mean every arsehole who thinks 4chan or internet memes are funny. MLP has a fairly large fanbase. Hell, I know more 'bronies' (urg) than TF2 fans, and you can see how popular that is based on this forum alone.

Bullet hell fans are a very niche group within a niche group of a niche group of a niche group. Gamers > Japanese fans > Importers > Bullet hell fans. There are alot of niche groups out there. I'm horror, co-op and FPS myself, with the occational kid friendly action/platform game. (Ratchet and Clank, Ruff Trigger, Taz, Hello Kitty ect.) Any genre or theme will pretty much have a fanbase of sorts, it's just a case of whats popular now. It's worth noting that a genre that is popular will usually have a glut of games, but will also bring in the johny come lately arsehole. FPS is 'in' at the moment for example.

Bullet hell shooters have become a mini meme of sorts recently due to the 'random funny' of a game called Jamestown. I doubt it will stick and hit mass popularity like MLP or Cake is a Lie though. Not suprisingly a couple of people have claimed to have always been life long bullet hell fans despite having never mentioned it before, but it will pass when the next thing comes along.

You and your obsession with 4chan is astounding. No, by "pony big" I mean it's among the most well known indie games for its quality, music, and the sheer range of fandom-induced crossover material. Just like TF2 is known for being a unique shooter with a break in the norm considering art style, direction, and constantly updating content. They show up on 4chan in the first place because they're good. OH! Bet you didn't know THAT one, huh?! I guess Valve only got the game famous because they advertized there?

Way to fail and make yourself look like a tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, Mr. Logic.

Or it could be Gamers > Japanese. O WAIT I GUESS THEY DON'T COUNT ANYMORE BECAUSE BULLET HELLS ARE ONLY THERE FOR THE MEME LOVERS. Gimme a fucking break.

Now that that's out of the way, I read on and see you, in fact, did not give me the above-requested break. Genres exist because not every game can be the same, and each genre has fans because MAYBE THAT'S WHAT THEY LIKE, much how you prefer to be a blithering vagina mouthed clump of bitter misfacts and psuedo psychology. It's kinda the same logic behind food, yeah? And maybe we get "popular" genres for any given year or month because an ACTUAL QUALITY GAME RELEASED and -not- because 4 chan is using radio sattelites to control everyone but your superior, informed intelligence.

Bullet hell shooters have become a mini meme of sorts recently due to the 'random funny' of a game called Jamestown.

I haven't even heard of that, and I've played Dodonpachi, Touhou, Ikaruga, Mushigamamggsgba (that one with purple bullets) Gradius, R-Type, Black Hawk (maybe got name wrong) Galaga Remix, Solace, that atom one, bullet heaven and even PARODIUS and beyond. I've been all over the shmup scene because I LIKE it, not because of this memetic game you speak of. Furthermore, none of them but parodius are LOL RANDOM, they're GAMES. You know, legit, serious games. Only more proof that you have no clue wtf you're talking about.

I doubt it will stick and hit mass popularity like MLP or Cake is a Lie though. Not suprisingly a couple of people have claimed to have always been life long bullet hell fans despite having never mentioned it before, but it will pass when the next thing comes along.

Yeah. Bullet hell has only taken over Japan since the goddamn 80s and us in the states have cult followings too. The touhou fandom has over 150 games in it with 20-ish being official. There's 700 fucking GIGS of music for it (accounting for original in game songs and remixes, most of which done by circles specializing in touhou mixes) and too much fanart to counts. As for the other shmups, Cave and Treasure are a fucking Japanese behemoth because of the sheer amount of cash their games have made, both in arcade cabinets and console releases.

Summing it all up, you know approximately ten percent of what you claim to know and thus should shut the fuck up about 4chan and memes before your tin foil hat scalds you with how hot headed you are.
