Sabre
This is one prefence that confuses me. I get why people go to see bands live. It's not my thing, and listening to people describe the events after the fact is much like the morning after report of some drunken party in that 'awesome' things sound incredibly dull. The bit I don't get is watching a live concert on TV or Youtube. The sound quality is crap, you have lots of noise, and they might not play the song you like. The only exception was one from years ago. Robbie Williams I think, where it was more of a comedy show with music, but other than that, it's all the bad stuff from a live show, with none of the good. Am I missing something?
Xortberg
Some concerts are pretty bad recorded, but sometimes the quality is actually quite good. And sometimes, the songs are better than the studio versions. I love my live Blue October album, and 75% of the songs on there are far superior to the other, recorded versions. As for the appeal, a lot of it has to do, I would imagine, with hearing a sort of interaction between band and audience, similar to a play. My dad has a Pearl Jam concert CD, and near the end of the last song when a lot of people were leaving early, Vedder changed the lyrics to something like "All you pussies leaving, fuck you." The audience loved it. That sort of thing has its own appeal, even if the quality isn't perfect. In addition, lots of bands just seem to put more soul into their music when they're playing in front of a crowd instead of sitting in a recording studio. Not all, and some sound absolutely horrid live, but the ones I've listened to mostly seem a lot more pumped live than in a studio. It's all down to personal preference, though, and the tastes of the person listening.
Psygonis
Well, if you can't go see your artists live, watching the concert might be a good alternative. All concerts don't even end up in stores under merchandised products though!
Xortberg
Also, in addition to what I said before, I've come across a song or two in my time that were utterly cool, but unavailable on any studio album. Going back to my Blue October album, I've never found a studio version of Pro Re Nata, which is basically just one longass violin solo and I love it. That could also be a slight motivation in getting live albums and whatnot.
Fedora
Yep. It all seems to boil down to preference. I've only been to two concerts in my short time though. I think the ones I went to see weren't that much different than on CD or MP3 but the "party" aspect is definitely there. There's a lot of energy in the crowd so you get a lot more of an experience out of it. Like my friends and I were having a blast singing along to the music and the crowd being loud enough to not know how bad we sounded. But other than that. I'm pretty content with CDs and stuff. BTW, if you wanted an actual "Pre-Recorded, Live!" thing, apparently there has been a "Live" Vocaloid concert in Japan!
LoneWolf
Live is usually better than studio, and the sheer energy is a kick. As for watching concert videos on YouTube, think of it as a preview for the next time the band comes through your area. Or sometimes just longing that you could make it to the show. And the sound and video quality isn't always crap:
Psygonis
+1 for that. There is an ambiance and en energy in the concerts that can be enjoyable to look at (even if it is best lived there at the concert!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggppYfXSGdghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOlgl4k4b6I First video starting 0:45 / Second video starting 4:30 : Imagine living that for a kid that watches the show. That's an experience you don't have on DVD... :P
Matrilwood
It's rather silly really, even the live appeal is lost because they do so much editing to the sound you might as well buy the normal CD. EDIT: for clarity
Xortberg
No they don't. I dunno what live CDs you've been listening to, but I've never heard one that sounded anything like a studio album. Even lip-syncing boybands manage to make it sound like it's live most of the time.
Matrilwood
No they don't. I was told this by a person I know in the industry and is a non-evil version of you.
Xortberg
I'm sure they edit the quality, yes, but never to the point that it stops sounding live or anything like you claim. Trust me, I've been to a concert or two, as well as having listened to plenty of live albums. Most, if not all, have at least managed to capture the feel of a live performance reasonably well. And ha ha, I'm not evil. I'm just an asshole.
