CrypticQuery
Yup, it's me again To get straight to the point, I've got somewhat of an odd computer problem that I can't seem to rectify. I have a portable hard-drive; a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, and I'm attempting to reinstall the software for it. I can get past installing the actual dashboard and drivers fine, but a secondary program that comes with it, Memeo Instant Backup, is causing me some trouble. It installs fine at first, but when it has a quarter of the way left to go, a small Windows Installer box opens. All it says is "Preparing to Install." It doesn't do anything, go anywhere, and the only option is "cancel." It sometimes pops up sporadically, but now it does whenever I attempt to install the Instant Backup. There must be a program that didn't install correctly somewhere, though I've got no place to start. Anyone have any ideas? EDIT: I've also run CCcleaner through its paces and fixed any registry errors or other things that may've been causing something. Still have the same problem. DZComposer
I would check the software vendor's KB or FAQ. Sounds to me like an issue with that specific installer. EDIT: Or it could be a hung Windows update. Start here with "I tried to install updates but one or more didn't get installed." http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates#
CrypticQuery
Thanks for the prompt reply and link, DZ, though I can't seem to find any discrepancy with anything. No error codes appear in Windows Update; everything is up to date. There doesn't appear to be any known problems with the software either. The only thing I could possibly think that would be causing problems would be a Postal 2 Demo I had on this computer a while back. I neglected to uninstall properly, though did so with another, fresh install and removed other components manually. Everything appeared to be cleared out, though if I do enter "postal" in the search bar in the start menu, the demo still pops up. When I attempt a delete, it says the file cannot be located. Properties lists the file at 0 bytes, though it still seems to be listed. There doesn't seem to be any other problems like this with the demo either. Salem
here is what my uncle said. "Completely uninstall every thing to do with the external hard drive disk, then shut down the computer and let it set a few minutes. Turn the computer on and plug the external hdd back in, let windows recognize it and then go to segates website and download the latest drivers for the hdd. After the new drivers are installed download the latest version of the backup program and install it from the download. Do not install anything off the cd that you can download instead because the software on the cd is old.
