Opinions on Star Fox 64 3D

Ah, the remake of a remake as me and my friends call it; if you think about it, it technically is.

Commonly, people dismiss the remake saying they like the original for some reason or another, but there are reasons for many of the changes in the remake. Sure everything has a rather new feel, given that everything got an update, though just how much different is it? My question here is, what are your thoughts on the remake? Have you played it yet? How does it look (For those who haven't played) from afar?

My thoughts;

In all the ways they've touched-up the game (Graphics, textures, audio, etc.), it really gives the game a fresh feel from the dated feel the classic game has, though given its age.

I think it's nice that they decided to do this, but I'm not happy Nintendo decided Star Fox really had to come down to this moment of requiring such a reboot. Adding on to that, the remade game is also a money-grab. We've heard it; this game has to sell enough copies to determine the fate of the franchise. I really don't feel that they should be choking out the franchise in such a way; bad game reviews weren't the only reason the franchise messed up.

Touching on Star Fox 64 3D again, I have noticed polygonal flicker from time-to-time, most prevalent in the Venom Tunnels (Venom 2 in particular), at one point, I even no-clipped through a degenerated wall and died in a glitch-void outside the tunnels. A glitch I don't really find too acceptable because of its "remake" nature.

I also don't understand why they had to put in two different modes of gameplay: N64, and 3DS mode. The only really noticeable differences are the ability to use Gyro controls, the "No Continues" thing, and maybe slightly more responsive controls (This may just be me). Why force people to earn medals and achievements twice? Especially if one mode isn't much different than the other? Both are the same game, just one has its add-ons which you can turn off (Gyro is completely optional).

I basically have no real formed opinion, and that's how I am about most remakes anyways. They're the same thing, but nothing can ever take away what the original achieved.

Well imo SF643D just needed some new content like a challenge mode or at a least leader boards. Instead of having two modes that felt the same, they could have just make the 3ds mode part of the Medal system or a unlock feature. My only big problem with the remake is Multiplayer. It wasn't just the missing online mode, but the lack of unlocking new things in multiplayer.

I'm still to buy this game. My new 3DS is on its way, so be prepared to part with your friend codes, yo. Or I'ma take 'em by force. With the Force. Dat crossover.

Having played around with multi-player a bit, I also found the controls in it sucked. They were so clunky it reminds me of how people describe Assault's on-foot missions, though I haven't played Assault to know that for certain. I didn't really think the controls were very good anyways and there should have been a custom controls feature.

I didn't mind Assault's on foot missions. Felt better then Adventures for me.

It was also missing the first-person view, which was replace with a zoom camera. I also have problems with the Power ups... Why the heck are they even in those ? blocks from the mario kart series. Why couldn't there be a power-up gauge that gives it to you by getting an amount of points instead of getting an over powered weapon randomly.

The physics in Adventures were a pain, and terribly done.

Just bought, played and beaten every level, it's a good time killer, I love level select and the multiplayer MUST have online dlc, it just has to. Some of the music. Has been a little butchered IMO, but that's a nit pick. Voices, I can say are pretty worse than the original but what ya gonna do? A graphic update I didn't approve of was bills craft, it's shape is wrong. I'll spare the details but overall, those are my only complaints.

Online multiplayer would have been nice. I see that as a massive missed opportunity.

I also found it easier then the N64 version, even in N64 mode. That annoyed me a little.

Overall though, I think its fantastic. It is a very welcome entry to my 3DS library.

Probably easy because should you ever rage, you can simply restart your 3DS and start from the last saved level. Yeah, that'd be easier than the N64. But I found that too. It could also be because we're essentially veterans to the game.

I don't think they ever really gave a reason as to why.

What was the reason no online? Couldn't afford? Ran out of time? Focused on graphics instead?

From what I heard ages ago it was that they simply didn't want to run servers for it. Could be that they didn't know how well that game would sell and didn't want to spend money on servers they weren't sure would be used. I am probably wrong though.

Well it would have sold better if it had that selling point. All I can do is fight the mean computer that loves to gang up on me.

Pretty much. Having online could have boosted sales. And don't worry, the computer hates me too (God Dammit Falco, shoot someone else for a change).

And slippy love to strike when anyone's at their weakest, and I find it Imposible to get it of laser fire, looping doesn't work, rolling don't do it, u turning, uh uh. I see what you did there q games. Anywho, the power ups I love are the firebird, cloak and the barrier. Nova blast is cool too, missiles and mines aren't as flashy as the others, though I don't get the transporting move since that's what the loop is for, unless the air moves were debunked in the power up option.

I haven't played it yet, but keep hearing bad things and not enough good stuff to make me buy it.

Sorry SF :(

Just got all medals on like... My second day... This feels easier than I remember, maybe it's because the tight controls. 3ds mode has friendly fire in case you hit your co pilots then they won't take damage.

I've finally played it. I have to say I prefer the old SF64 over this one.

Dear lord how late am I.

Though I haven't played SF643D yet, I'm really really looking forward to it. I've watched some playtroughs/gameplays, and I have to say that the voice acting completely sucks and the music has been butched a bit as well. I didn't want to spoil it for myself (even though I know what happens...SF64 is my all time favorite, other than Red Dead Redemption.) anyway, I think the graphics are amazing; and when I'm not home to play SF64, I can always take it with me on my 3D which is soon to come this Christmas, maybe along with Super Mario. Fingers crossed.

Heh yeah, Star Fox on the go. My problem with the game is that once you start a level, it's very difficult to stop or cease concentration from it. It's not like the DS Zelda games where you could pick it up and look at the screen in small intervals. (I think of this now because I've been playing Spirit Tracks.)

OK, I'm going to rant here.

I cannot tell you how SERIOUSLY angry I was that there was only about 6 multiplayer maps. I bought this game for multiplayer. Hell, I bought the 3DS simply to play this multiplayer.

Where are the old maps from the original? They didn't dare touch the main game, taking out any levels from that. They didn't take out levels from other games like Mario 64 on the DS. So why in all sacred things did they remove the original maps?

Secondly, where are the tanks and on-foot options? I've read you can unlock these, but I see no vids on youtube to prove this. And, if try, why do you need to unlock them?

Man, as if I haven't enough reasons to hate Nintendo, they gave me a really big one with this.

As for the main game, yeah, it's ok, but I'd rather play the Panzer Dragoon series for 3rd person railshooters.

I can't play it with 3D on.. The problem is that for the 3D effect to work you must stay still... But with an action game like starfox, you move around a little during play, and it hurts my eyes so much that after 5 minutes I have a headache..

The new voice acting just sounds like they actually knew that what they're saying sounds cheesy/stupid, unlike the original.. And it kinda ruins it for me, even though I didn't really find most of the dialog all that interesting in SF64. With the exception of the tanuki on the training level, he's got the most awesome voice ever!(for a tanuki)

And I prefer the N64's analog stick to the circle pad!

I still wish they had made a remake of the snes game instead ! :)

@Terramax:

They trashed the multiplayer from SF64, even the cool music, everything is brand new. They even added some really unstarfoxy music to accompany it.. They really didn't put much thought into making this game. It seems they only wanted another launch title for the 3DS..

And its a remake of a reboot actually Hidi..

while it looks prettier, i never use 3d because it never adds anything to actual gameplay. i dislike how they screwed up bills fighter, it isn't the same. and it resembles commands.

controls are tight and shooting down enemies has never been so satisfying. never used the gyro controls since its a stupid concept.

for difficulty, do the levels seem crunched? and the enemies a tad on the slow side? its more noticably in the all range mode missions.

voice acting, eh, i prefer the original more. slippys better here though. some lines were added, others were changed,

nintendo, Y U NO HAVE NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER?! seriously why? whats your excuse? oh well, the power ups are AWESOME. fire bird, cloak, and barrier are my favorites. <3

level select is badass. you can skip cutscenes too! thats also a big plus. =)

i give this a 7/10, its starfox 64 on the go, with pretty graphics, tighter controls, neat power ups, level select, skipable cutscenes for faster play, its a nice edition to the 3ds library.
