Abandoned Mega Man FPS Game

Harmony Descent

This title is not lying.

I was just rummaging around on the net for a while and I was just searching for random stuff.  I came across a website that was talking about Sega announcing a new Sonic game under the title "Sonic Adventure 3," and I just shrugged a bit from that - not very interested.  So, I was looking on the page until I saw this image:

It intrigued me since I had never seen Mega Man in first person - disregarding mods of any kind.  So, I clicked it and read that it was a project that was done by the company Armature Studio, the same people that brought us the Metroid Prime trilogy - hence, the similarities in gameplay.  But, take a guess at WHO the company was being overlooked by?  Take a wild effing guess!  I'll give you a hint: Street Fighter.

CAPCOM!  Yes, this company is notorious, in my opinion, for screwing things over with great games - this being one of them!  They cancelled this game because it was "too risky" for the higher-ups in Capcom.  So, the creator, Keiji Inafune, left the company and I wouldn't blame him.  Seriously, when will Capcom grow some damn balls for a change?

Anyways, I just wanted to let you guys in on this little find I made since I am a Mega Man and reading about this just royally pissed me off.  So, without further ado, I will show you footage from the game that had potential of having a great trilogy - minus the fact that it was first-person.

I'd love to hear your opinions!

A bit goofy to see a grimdark MM, but I would've bought that.  It looks pretty much done too. You think Capcom would be willing to take a risk once and a while with all the dosh they make...

I take it you haven't played through the Mega Man X games, that whole series is pretty dark, especially the later games from 4 and onwards.

As for my opinions on this, as cool as it looked it really didn't scream Mega Man. In my opinion if Mega Man went fps it would have to play kind of like an unholy mix of Portal and Bulletstorm. I know it sounds odd but think about it for a bit, Mega Man has always been about platforming and killing robots with really cool weapons and often using those weapons as tools to make situations much more easier.

I thought the only Megaman shooter was Megaman Legends.

That was from a third person perspective, though.

Yeah, but they didn't look grimdark.  They were still goofy animal robots and kung fu robots with oversized limbs.

And are the rest of you serious? Pretty much every MM can be classified as a shooter.

Grimdark Mega Man FPS looks horrible. If Mega Man was an FPS it'd at least have to be quake-style like the above Doom Mod. Fast paced, crazy, and colorful.

Wow.

I never knew a game could look so great yet was directed to be absolute shit.

*clap* *clap*

Oh good that still works.

I had to look at this game a couple more times to see it's faults.  The one thing that just stands out - this can be considered nitpicky - is the weapon.  It just looks like he's hold a gun instead of his whole forearm and hand being a buster cannon.  It just looks... Weird.

Also, I have to agree in some ways that the gameplay should be similar to Doom - fast, hectic, but colorful.  Plus, it's looks similar to the original Mega Man, but the X series is a sequel to the original Mega Man for the NES, and the style they have - oversized limbs and such - is what sets the series, and characters, apart from the others.

I just get too many Metroid Prime vibes here.  Just watching the gameplay just yells "METROID PRIME" here.  As for the comparison to Bullet Storm, I'm not so sure that game resembles this.  But, I can see a FEW similarities.

To end this post, I think the grimdark feel would have been good for this particular game, maybe triolgy if it was released, since I'm growing tired of the series taking a somewhat pre-teen direction.  I think that with this game, it would have made it appeal to the more mature audience - like us.  But, the weird thing about this game, Maverick Hunter, is that the game would have taken place in the X timeline - the article basically said so with mention of Zero potentially being in it.

Just sucks, to me, that it was scrapped since it basically looked finished with only a few minor touch-ups here and there.
