Post-Katrina Relief Efforts

by Juliaki

NOTE: This article may be freely distributed in its entirety. The more people hear, the more help appears.

A bit of background on me...I grew up in South Florida. I lived through Hurricane Andrew (one of the largest hurricanes to hit the United States in its history). My dad worked restoration crew for months afterwards. I was lucky...we had little damage. I did have the opportunity to travel to the devastated areas a couple weeks after Andrew crossed and saw first-hand the savage power of a hurricane. I know what these folks are going through.

Some of the information from this e-mail comes from a very dear friend who works with the Red Cross. I'm going to paraphrase since I don't have permission to release the information in its entirety, plus I'm adding some of my own reflections.

According to the information that has been provided to him, 80% of New Orleans is underwater. Think about your city... now think how it would be if 80% of your neighborhood was underwater. And keep in mind, the water is STILL rising.

Today on CNN, I saw a news clip of a man with a group of children in tow. He kept saying that he lost everything. He and his family had been sitting on the roof, hanging on for life. The force of the water split the house in half. He held on to his wife's hand for as long as he could, but she eventually whispered to him that she knew he couldn't hold on. She asked him to take care of the children....and then was swept away. His story is one of thousands.... all heartbreaking. All tragic.

Please spend some time praying---the main focus right now is for a speedy receding of the water and for the rescue of people who are still trapped in their attics or on roofs of houses awaiting rescue. Once the water has started to go down, the next concerns include providing safety for the rescue and recovery workers as well as safety and healings for the victims.

If you are financially able, please do not send random supplies. I remember from Andrew that the mishmash of supplies we received were not helpful (some people sent wool sweaters to Florida in the middle of August!!). Financial donations *are* needed and can be used to buy bulk rescue supplies. If you are looking for a non-religiously motivated organization, my recommedation is to give to the Red Cross. They can be reached at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW. The average family will need $8,000 in survival supplies. There may be up to 1.5 million people who have no place to live. Best case scenario has the power off for a few weeks... speaking from experience, it will likely be 2-3 months. That also means that there will be no air conditioning (and remember that Louisiana is a swamp) and there will be no water treatment plants working to purify water for drinking.

Major amounts of blood supplies are being sent down to the area, leaving local blood supplies in extreme shortages. If you are able, donate blood.

Also, volunteer. Let's face it, most of us are not trained or able to go down to the disaster area for rescue and recovery efforts, but local volunteers are needed as well. Again, let me plug the Red Cross. They use local volunteers to help coordinate national efforts--everything from sorting supplies to manning telephones.

Finally, take assessment of yourself and your own disaster plan. The world is a very unstable place and disasters generally hit without warning. Make sure that you and your family are prepared and know what to do in case of an emergency. Make plans now to avoid tragedy later.

Ugh... I couldn't read most of it because I've been watching the news on different channels, saying that people are giving up on eachother and actually LOOTING one of another then taking guns and trying to steal Police helicopters. Seriously, why?

When this comes to mind I feel so horrible about myself not being able to do anything but just send water and cans of food...

Same here. This hurricane just... caused an unbelievable amount of damage... New Orleans about 80% flooded... Biloxi LEVELED...

After it happens, you just can't believe it. You tend to think that these things just don't happen...

They can't play San Andreas, so they have to act it out IRL! BOOYA!

But seriously, I know it's effed up. Looks like a nuclear bomb hit. And to think, that could have happened where I live. I live in central Florida, and the most we got was a little rain. I've been wondering why they give hurricanes names. Are such destructive monsters really worthy of being dignified with names?

Ugh. Then there's the gangs that are going around raping people. I wouldn't mind taking a nice big knife and slitting their throats one by one. >_< I dunno why but rape gets to me worse than murder does.

They wouldnt be worth staining your blade. Snap their spines, or, do what I would do and hold them against a wall/tree/whatever, shove their hand into their mouth then forcefully snap their jaw shut, making them bite their own fingers off. THEN snap their spine.

Or rip it out and brutally flog them with it.

It's not the gangs I'm concerned about.

It's the hundreds dead or dying in the flooded areas and the shelter points.

The gangs will get justice eventually if the U.S. government is able.

Of course not people who were teachers, doctors, lawers, whatever are working on the most primal level which is just trying to survive.
