Video Games Passing on to other Generations

I'm serious when talking about this in a the most respectful way (so nobody post "who cares" when replying to this if they don't have anything good to say about it). I'm pretty much talking to mostly some of older forum members here who prolly have a family (can be your relatives etc.) and collect video games. I have been a video game collector for years, with a wide range of consoles dating from the 70's all the way up to the present and my question is:

"would you pass down your video game collection to you children or a family member etc.?"

L8tly it has been building up till I felt I should vent this out and express how I feel about it and what some of you might do who really care about your hobby or collection of video games and would like to do with theirs whether they would pass it down to their children or family or donate it or sell it.

Personally If I ever have a family of my own and my consoles still work with how I have been taking care of them so far I would think about passing them down to my children if they were ever interested, regardless if it they don't last another generation so long as they had some fun with the stuff I enjoyed. I havent put much thought about what I'd do if that never happens. Any thoughts on what you would do with yours?

An interesting question. It all depends on if my children, if I ever get that far, would actually like to play games that aren't entirely new. They would be faced with quite the dilemma you know.

"Am I going to play Starfox 64 for a couple of hours? Or would my time be better spent trying to get further in the new game with 5D holocronic experience and realistic physic engine?"

That's the same reason why I'm not playing some of my older games anymore. Not because they've become bad over the years, or I've allready gotten tired of them, it's because what I could otherwise do is so much more interesting.

I'd have to wait an see what happens I guess.

"You have to play using your hands!? That's a babies toy!" Yeah... I can picture the future just like that scene from "back to the Future II", when Marty demonstrates how to play Wild Gunman to two kids in the year 2015. If I were to show my children what Star Fox was or other games on consoles that I grew up on they would prolly not think about using their hands on a certain controller from all the "new" innovated things expected from video games and all.

I still hope that there would be some interest in the older video games and if not on the old consoles than at least have their video games archived on the newer generation consoles so it wont be a total loss. I just know there is a major difference between playing games that were meant on a certain video game console for instance "Star Fox 64" on the N64 with its rumble feature that you can only get from the N64 console and smooth control that you can only get from their controllers. I hope if Anything though that the future still has them using their hands.

I have a fairly large collection of GC games that I've collected over the years and some are still in the box not even opened. I've spendt too much time going everywere to get hard to find games to simply give them away. I'm putting them in a case that's made of aluminum and then I'm putting that in another bag like the space savers to drain all the air and prevent them from getting damaged. Then in another heavy iron chest. Then I'm going to bury it. It's going to be my time capsule. I have over half of my stuff ready for packing. I might in the future open it and play them once more before I decide to sell keep or pass down the family tree to someone who really would appriciate the hard work it took me years to complete. It will be opened in 2038. It shall be planted under a tree in 3 days. I hope they will last my lifetime. That's my choice.

O Rly? You collected all those old games?

Just joking, Chrono, you're awesome!

To answer your question...yes, I'd leave my old games in a will to someone...I'll never have kids, or a wife.  I'm most likely gonna die alone, and miserable, (probably hanging myself with the cord from a spare controller :P ) but I will pass the torch down to someone like a nephew, niece, friend, etc.

I would definitly pass down my collection of video games to younger generations. One of the reasons for keeping classics is to remember where it originated from.

I.e. - Sonic is in SSBB. Many young ones may think Nintendo always owned it. If I give them a Saga console, they will have more of an understanding on where Sonic came from.

I would totally pass it down... well, mebbe when i die err something, just it brakes my heart when I ask some young ins that are younger then I a question about a game, and they say they have never heard of it. Picture it, Zelda Mario and StarFox, those aren't your childhood games, your Zelda is gears of war, you're Mario is halo, and your StarFox is Call of poopy, seems horrible, but it's all ready reality in some situations.

I think that if they wanted to play my old games they would rather have emulators on the Holo-Virtualizer Computers rather than using the real hardware.

As a matter of fact it should be noted that I do like some old games, but that was because I grew playing them (but because at the time that was what my family could afford to buy me) yet at the same time the PS2 was in the works; and by the time my brother could play games, he did grew up playing newer games, and refers to old ones as "boring and their graphics suck"...

These children, they do not understand the beauty of the all-time classics!

Maybe, since I will force my Hyper-Wife to have Hyper-Children, maybe then they will love my (as they would put it) "Hyper-Old" games!

Well, the system I fondly grew up with was the Nintendo 64, but I spent the earliest years of my life playing the NES and SNES, and I still have them and play them. (Except the NES, that's broken :() But I made it a point to replace the NES games I could find on Virtual Console. Ice Hockey, Donkey Kong, DK Junior, Metroid, Super Mario Bros., SMB3, and plenty others I still have and also backed em' up on the Wii.

I doubt the SNES I own will last until I have kids, (If I have kids. lol) but I will make it a point to make sure that they grow up with the N64, Gamecube, and even the Wii. (I'm only turning 18 next month, there WILL be a new console when I have kids.) I'll even find a way to make it so that they get to play NES and SNES. And if they don't like em', I'll make sure that they at least give them the respect they deserve.

As for the younger generations already dissing the older consoles and games, I've already seen that, and it really does make me sad, but I don't think they will fade into obscurity. Take a look at a lot of REALLY old things that still remain popular. In music, there's The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Journey, even ZZ Top still finds it's place in today's media. Old TV shows like the original Star Trek, and even The Three Stooges still find find their places in today's generations. (I happen to be a fan of Retro Television shows.)

If all of the old icons are still popular today despite their age, then games like Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Sonic the Hedgehog, being as iconic as they are, will find their places in our children's generations, and the generations to come.

Yo Runner I will say this in your previous responce. The classics never die. They fade into their Golden Years. Remember that.

If I decide to have kids, they are starting on NES, PERIOD! As for the topic, If they wouldn't completely trash everything, I would pass it down, if they would completely destroy those games, I'd probably pay for however many coffins it takes to house all of them, and put that coffin in the ground next to/around mine.

When I have kids, they are starting on the first game I ever played, (drum roll) Starfox SNES, then they get the original Halo, all of which I have locked in a vault.

Your coffin better be a good one. Specially if you plan to, like me, become undead and leave it every night!

If my kids are bad, I punish them by forcing them to play the shi*tty games that sucked ass, on the old consoles/systems, but if they're good, I'll let them play the good games, on the newer or older consoles.

I hope you do not mind if I viciously steal your idea and use it.

As for passing the games down, I'm going to raise my kids, assuming I have any, the same way I was. On Star Fox, Duke Nukem, and Turok.
