I'd throw Minerva Mink from the cartoon series Animaniacs up there, she's quite popular in the fandom.

Is this only for copyrighted characters from video games/tv series, etc?

Krystal <3

Krystal was already mentioned lover boy :P

Actually, it's not the predominant, it's just the one that is known more to the majority of people out there, same way anime fans are stereotyped as people with no lives with an unhealthy attraction to the female characters, often to the point of losing touch on reality. It's actually, "No, I just like seeing a show where someone can hold a massive revolver that would be quite unbalanced, which can turn his arm into a massive beam cannon without it looking cheesy, like it would in a live action movie." (Two points for the one that can name the anime, it's a bit obvious though)

Anyway, as far popular furry characters, Minerva Mink should definitely be up there, as she was in the Animaniacs show, which was quite popular, and was just as memorable to adults as to children due to the sexual nature of her character (and she is still my favourite cartoon character ever due to the funny situations).

I also think any of the old Hanna-Barbera or Tex Avery cartoon characters can fill the role (90% of them were anthropomorphic animals, after all.)

Furry? Furry furry? 'Cause those ain't furries.

Actually, I think they do fit the qualification, as they are both anthropomorphic felines that can walk on two legs, talk, and show expressions (though Hobbes is a figment of imagination too).

Even Scooby Doo is able to be considered a furry, I believe, as he is able to talk and show expressions (and occasionally walk on two legs).

I hate to call these characters "furries", because even though they might be anthromorphic, they weren't how you say, intended to be furries?

I sure as hell wouldn't call Scooby Doo a furry.

I meant predominately in the way that the most popular furry artists, websites, money made at conventions and through private sales, etc are all of a pornographic sexual nature.  The top 20 artists on Furaffinity and the vast majority of well known furry artists in general all mainly draw yiff.  That's an undeniable fact.  Yes, I know furries such myself don't like to characterized exclusively with adult material and we tell others about that but if you look at statistics within the clean part of the fandom is relatively small compared to web traffic, page views etc on lets just say....the top 40 furry websites.  The % of anime adult works/sites/etc compared to clean works is much lower than could be said for the fandom.

It's a stigma that I don't think will ever go away from the fandom sadly. :/

I think they fall under the technical requirements of being them, and while true that it isn't along the lines of the intentional furries, I do love to point out that they are technically furries to people that hate furries. The, "OMGWTFBBQ!?" look you sometimes get can be quite priceless.

And that's just the people using the, "sex sells" philosophy, and again, that's just because they become better known for the more... shocking nature of their furry nature.

And I'm sure the stigma will go away, after all, remember when people that liked video games were "freaks" and "nerds who live in their mother's basement?" Now, we are the norm, we are marketable, we are "trendy."

This message brought to you by Hot Topic.

Sorry, couldn't resist, but VGCats couldn't of been more accurate. I remember going in to Hot Topic with my sister when she was goth many many years ago, it was all black with skull rings and such, when I went in to get some goth pants (because they were badass pants), I saw HALO action figures, "Things I learned from video games" shirts and posters, and a "Chuck Norris facts" poster. That was another of the few times I actually facepalmed in reality. (though I won't lie, I did like the "things I learned from video games" poster, and wanted it).

It would sound better technically if they were called anthros, and the members of the furry fandom - furries.

You know I think Anthro would be a better term for them all as Furry seems to emply sex..

Same here,

Her image is appealing i'll admit, but ilike her personality and compassion for living things. something i have yet to see in a person in the real world. no form of greed or materializm in her.

plus she's sort of a reason why my mind is in a delicate state right now,.

Then "anthro" would imply sex.

No Antho implies two legged while Furry implies two legged sex  icon.
