What happened to splitscreen multiplayer!?!?!?

Splitscreen multiplayer, for me, was a great thing.  I'd usually have friends over while playing video games, and what better to have them be able to play too?  Alas, splitscreen is a dying art, and it hasn't been included in many games this generation.  Online is great, but when someone that wants to play the same game as you has to buy a new system and TV, that's bullshit.  What are your thoughts on the matter?

well since inernet came to consoles the whole spit screen with friends is basicly dead you can now play with him over the inernet.

-The ability to play online in some cases costs money, meaning companies like Microsoft will get more money.

-Two or more friends need copies of the game to play together, more people buy the game.

Besides, why would you want to play with 2-4 friends when you could play with 10 or more?

Split screen multiplayer, was....... the shit. It was more entertaining because you were all together, and it was just more fun. But then again, you must take into consideration our predicament, crazyfooInc, we're miles from each other, and the only way we can sit down and play a nice game of ... whatever... is to have the internet.

I loved Goldeneye007 and Mario Kart 64 splitscreen.  But like Kursed I preferred to play over LAN for PC games around the same time period

I like Split-Screen, but honestly

there is not much me and brother

play togheter. And when we do

it is usually SD Gundam G-Next (SNES),

and it is turn-based...

Oh well, also, when I played with my friends

or my brother, keyboard had a thing about pressing

more than 8 keys are the same time or the like...

...And for the console, I never played with my friends,

only with him.

So LAN/WAN opens both of us the opportunity

to play with our friends. I think that the reason

why is it gone is that is it no longer... for lack of

a better word, 'needed'. Look at me and my brother.

Since we had a PC years ago we shared it.

Today both we have our own PC, so why sit in the 'same'

screen, while each one can sit in his 'own'?  :wink:

Split-screen is the only way to go. You get a personal interaction with the other players that just doesn't happen otherwise. It's similar to playing chess or poker on the interwebs: it's the same game, but it's just no the same when you can't interact with your opponent.

True, but after all, the ones who

say if there is or not are those with

I don't play online, simply because my internet connection isn't fast enough. That, and I won't be able to punch the other players in the face when I lose.

Seriously, few things are better than gathering a few mates to play together on split-screen. The online simply lacks the social interaction with your fellow players. Shouting to the others over a microphone isn't social interaction, it's just annoying.

I wondered when someone was gonna bring this up. The multiplayer lag is horrible! Especially on Brawl, your trying to play through Wi-Fi, but you can't because the ******* lag keeps slowing down the damn gameplay.

Some games deal with lag better then others. Today, I just raged out of a game of MW2 after latency was so bad in the time it took my bullets to leave my gun, I had been spotted, shot, had my family notifed, a short service and burried.

That said, I disagree on the mic issue.

The one main problem I have with the disappearance of splitscreen is this.  Say you have some friends over, and they want to play some video games.  Sounds easy right? But no, they have to head home, and play online, instead of all sitting on the couch and going nuts.  I always found playing with people on my couch with everyone laughing like hell and trying to knock the controllers out of each other's hands much more fun that playing online.  You just can't beat the social interaction :D
