http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management  -  Quite a controversial topic if I may say so myself.

I'm guessing he bought Alpha Protocol (a game) online but now can't transfer/copy it to play it on other computers, or play it in general

Sabre would have to explain in more detail the specifics of his case

DRM. A form of copy protection that installs a bunch of usually hidden and fiddly crap on your computer. To play the game it has to check with online to see if you have permission to be playing the game you pay for. Install it enough times, the server goes down (or they simply decide they dont want to pay for running it) or you lose your internet connection, you're game don't work.

Alpha Protocol is a spy action RPG, think Mass Effect with borne and bond instead of picard.

I was really looking forward to it, but I hate DRM, it punishes the lagit users while the pirates don't have to put up with it. I want to buy it, but I also don't want DRM.

http://www.defectivebydesign.org <- everything you need to know about DRM.

This is my concern about things like Steam. What if Valve goes under, or decides to shut-down Steam? What happens to the hundreds of dollars worth of games that I purchased that would no longer work?

A Sony BMG DRM scheme ended up damaging Windows installs a few years ago by acting like malware in the way it hid itself from detection.

It's basically a way for content providers to screw you after you already buy their products.

DRM was a good idea to protect publishers and developers but it was terribly executed.

True.

Also by doing this they are not going

to stop pirates. If it is protected, someone

would crack it, so,

why attack your honest custommers?

Steam at least offers a good service, works, and goes away when you tell it too. Also valve have a plan for if they go under, basicly a steam update that will make automaticly OK all games, you just won't be able to DL them again.
