Guest Mr. Nintendo

They're both merely the same. If you want to be a N64 collector like me, I would get it for the N64...unless you want to buy it on the Wii which honestly isn't anything too special.

I'm going to have to go with Mr. Nintendo; for collectability the N64 version is where you want to be; but for convenience the Virtual console's version is fine.

Also, not to be a grammar nazi or anything, but PLEASE use some punctuation! It makes things easier to read :P

The N64 version looks a little better, and performs a little better. The VC version has some spots where the game can slightly lag. Also, SF64 had very complex lighting for an N64 game. The VC emulator does the best job at handling it (most N64 emulators render it way too dark), but it still doesn't match the real thing.

There is also the TV Technology differences. SF64 looks terrible on most modern TVs. The boxy models and super-compressed low-resolution textures look obvious. Particularly when the game is stretched to fit a 16:9 screen. I have seen textures ripped from SF64. Their resolution is much smaller than most forum avatars.

SF643D will be the first version of Star Fox 64 to have correct lighting since the N64, as SF643D is not just porting the original's graphics engine.

As far as playability, though, there is not much difference.

To add to DZC's post, here's a few other things:

-The VC version of Expert lags at a lot of parts, most noticeably in Sector Y towards the end if you took the lower route earlier in the level.

-The MacBeth explosions (if you hit the eight switches) are *much* faster in the VC version

-The lighting on the water in Corneria and Aquas in the VC version seems really off; it doesn't seem as dark as the rest of the game, and looks out of place

They should be nearly exactly the same, but if there are any problems whatsoever they'd be in the VC version.

Yeah, but nobody said anything so I kept going, now that we have proof. I can go back to saying cryptic comments and numbers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if I could only play this game on an HDTV, wouldn't the Virtual Console version be the best option? I mean, If I use a component cable to connect my Wii to the HDTV, the game has to look better than the N64 version connected to the same TV, right? I read most N64 games on the VC are rendered in a higher resolution, and AFAIK there are no component cables for the N64.

The game will not look better on VC, even on a modern TV. It will look slightly better on the N64 due to the flaws of emulation.

The game is not rendering in progressive scan, and the game has very low resolution textures and low-poly models. They will look terrible regardless of cable used.

I see, well I stand corrected, you clearly know what you're talking about. I was about to get the VC version of this game, but now I think I'm gonna wait a little longer and save more money to once again get an N64 with this awesome game in its original fomat, which seems to be the best so far. Thanks for the reply! :-)

Probably the N64 because sometime the point of origin is better than the new one.

I just remembered something that really bothers me: if I get the game from the VC, I'm not really buying the game, it's more like I'm buying the permission to play the game in that specific console only... if I sell my Wii (which I probably will as soon as the next StarFox is confirmed for the Wii 2) or it breaks down, I will lose my game as well. That really sucks IMO. :-x

So yeah, I'll definitely get the N64 version ASAP. starfox_foxArwingSprite.gif

In regards to people nocking the Wii/VC version, the original N64 game had lag to, I recall. (In fact, the Wii version is missing some lag/slowdown animation on certain parts to that the N64 version had, like during the ending sequence when they're running.)

The Wii version actually has a better pixel resolution, and less fog, so you can see details better then the N64 one. The only thing missing is rumble support. (But you still need batteries for the rumble pack in the N64 version anyways, so I don't miss it to much personally.)

Also, you can make a back-up copy of your save information (scores, unlockables, and option settings) on an SD card if you wish.

Also, if you don't have a "Classic controller," the game works perfectly & comfortably with a GameCube controller, if you have one already.

In fact, the closer X & Y buttons on the GameCube pad (used to break & boost in the game) are more conviently placed neer the A-shoot button, making control perhaps better then the N64 version.

Also, sense the Wii version tracks your purchase, and gameplay time information on the "Nintendo Channel," and adds it to the SF64 page there, it's probably beneficial to the support of the series to purchase the official download version. (Only 10 bucks after all.)

Star Fox needs all the support it gets. (Especially sense the GameCube & DS titles didn't sell to well compared to the SNES & N64 ones.)

Or you could just wait patiently for the 3DS remake.

It's tied to your Club Nintendo account, actually. I had to RMA my Launch Day Wii, and it was unfixable (it was a victim of the GPU issues early Wiis had), so the sent me a new one. I was able to re-download all of my WiiWare and VC games without having to buy them again.

Whether or not Nintendo will make these purchases transferable to Cafe remains to be seen.
