PSN's Downtime Explained

The PSN downtime has finally been explained by SONY themselves, though the news is grim to say the least;

http://blog.us.plays...k-and-qriocity/

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

  1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
  2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
  3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

Quote:

Greetings, Sony Customers And PS3 Users. We are Anonymous.

During the last few days, Anonymous has been targeting Sony for their outrageous treatment of not only PS3 users and jailbreakers, but also of the general public. Their propaganda regarding jailbreaking implies that it encourages piracy and thereby makes people lose their jobs, whereas jailbreaking actually just means you are making YOUR device do what it should do. Imagine if Microsoft forced you to use Internet Explorer instead of Firefox or Chrome. Imagine if they denied users from using any other web browser than their own. Many people would obviously be pissed... but then, why aren't you pissed at Sony?

The fact that their litigation demanded information on everyone who had viewed the material, was completely unacceptable. This is a threat not only to the gaming community, but to freedom of information in general. The fact that the privacy of individuals can be violated, simply for accessing information, and legal action can be taken for doing something with something you own, are steps far beyond the line. Anonymous decided it could not allow this to stand. If jailbreaking a phone for use of legal (unsigned) apps is found legal, why would this be any different for the Geohot case, seeing as Geohot explicitly states he does not support piracy?

Anonymous is not attacking the PSN at this time. Sony's official position is that the PSN is undergoing maintenance. We realize that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.

Anonymous is on your side, standing up for your rights. We are not aiming to attack customers of Sony. This attack is aimed solely at Sony, and we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions. If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal.

This operation is a response to Sony's attempt to deprive their customers of products they bought and therefore own, wholly and completely. Anonymous will not attempt to fight this by following the exact same course of action. We have plenty of tricks up our sleeves.

As a last point, we would like to point out that different operations are "run" by different people. Those who are involved in the organisation of OpSony, are not necessarily those involved in that of SonyRecon. Anonymous Operations are generally independent efforts, and it would be a mistake to assume that the same individuals are responsible for every action taken. Anonymous is comprised of people with diverse points of view, of which not all coincide with one another.

That being said, our campaign against Sony and others that would trample on the idea of free information will continue, until we are satisfied with the outcome.

We are Anonymous,

We are legion,

We never forgive,

We never forget,

Expect us.

Was the name-calling REALLY necessary? <_<.

All that was really said was that there was an external intrusion of the network in which information may have been compromised; I don't see the point of posting the Anon videos. They may be the culprits, yes, though what point are you actually trying to get across?

EDITED AFTER QUOTE WAS ADDED:

So they've "declared war" on Sony, yet won't step up to the plate when shit really goes down? Anonymous is composed of slack-jawed idiots that crave power IMO.

Sony is trying to cover the whole issue up.

What REALLY happened is that Sony started a multi million dollar lawsuit against the PS3 Jailbreak creator, Mr.Hotz (Known online as GeoHot).

Sony demanded the IP adresses of every person who viewed both his website along with Youtube from the Hosting company along with a shit ton of OTHER personal information that puts the End User at risk.

Their obvious intention was to sue anybody and everybody for any bit of cash they can get their greasy hands on while flipping the whole privacy invasion tables onto anonymous.

Stop being an ass.

I will be an ass because Sony is pulling this massive coverup and people are horribly misinformed while they continue to pay for services and goods from such a corrupt company.

People need to be informed.

The irony. The word you were looking for is "You're."

Next time you call someone a dumbass, at least try to hide your own idiocy. =V

I'll bet you'll give a fuck when you receive a court order for a law suit from sony because you just happened to view Geohot's content.

Dont be so oblivious as to what sony is doing. Stand up for your rights you coward.

Look at it from an individual standpoint rather than a corporate one. If you screwed around with something you weren't supposed to IRL, (i.e. carjacking), released a guide on how to carjack, and then a shit-ton of people began to carjack others, wouldn't the police be knocking at your doorstep, along with everyone else's who used your guide to commit a crime?

I agree with what you're saying though; they shouldn't be cracking down on EVERYONE who just passed by to view the video/page, though if you don't want to have the hammer come down on you in the first place, don't click the link!

Stand up for your rights you coward.

Must you get your point across by insulting everyone? FoXXX just said, much to comedic affect, "nobody cares." He is entitled to his opinion, no matter how ridiculous it is in your eyes.

And who cares if Sony is "corrupt," everyone, everything, and every corporation can be considered "corrupt" in the sense that you've used it. And honestly, I don't give a damn; if you don't screw around with piracy and security features, no one will have a problem.

Not only that, but we're getting what we're paying for. Think we care if they're suing people because they're installing Linux on their PS3 or something? All we're using PSN for is playing online games, and buying other games. We don't really care if they were attacked or for what reason, really, they're not stealing our information, they're not that bad. We just buy games and play em, that's all, I bet most of us just wanted to know why they were down so we could estimate the time they were going to be down for. Why should we care if they're covering up a DDOS attack? It doesn't matter.

No more arguing/bickering if it resorts to name calling. D:

Btw, I like how Anonymous does their videos. :)

I'm just sad because Netflix, which we recently signed up for, requires PSN to run :(

Hopefully this doesen't turn into a major shitstorm for the hackers/jailbreakers. I respect their works and look up to them. It's not easy to hack a device like a PS3.

I've heard from multiple sources that you can still use Netflix, you just need to log in a few times or something. Apparently doing so bypasses the PSN completely.

I heard that if you just hit circle at the log-in screen, it will bypass it and you can still use Netflix :P

I don't really use my PS3 that much, so it being down doesn't bother me. It's the fact that personal information was stolen bugs me.

This.

This is just me, but it's hard to care about a string of events that have absolutely no bearing on what I do, being an Xbox own instead of PS3.

Y'know what they say: You get what you pay for.
