Sabre
To cut a long story short, some mistakes on valves part and confusion has led to valve saying "Sod it, Source SDK for everyone!" so anyone can make new maps for TF2 if they like. For the non valve fans, SDK is the development tool. They run on top of something called the SDK Base. The SDK Base is what is needed to run mods (games built on top of other games). However, news on the SDK base is still one with no solid answer. Currently only SDK Base 2006 is availible for free, limiting the mods you can play. However, given that TF2 SDK requires SDK Base 2007 which is what most mods are built on it's looking more and more promising that mods could be free to all. We'll have to see. Fox-Shot
If they do decide to make all the SDKs Free, I wouldn't be surprised if that means another engine is in the works, though I doubt it. It would be nice for them to actually make a new engine that can push a system harder.
Star Fox Runner
Well, I highly doubt they'll build a new engine anytime soon, Source may have been released in 2004, but it's a pretty versatile engine, I mean, compare Half Life 2 in 2004 to Portal 2 now. Same Engine, but a more advanced game.
