TCPeppyTc
Has anyone read this book or seen this series by George R.R Martin? What do you think of it if you have? Is he the American Tolkein? or just another fantasy author? what do you all think?
Xortberg
I don't consider myself an expert, but I definitely think he's not very Tolkein. Tolkein was much more mystically inclined, with magical races and wizards and Sauron and all that. Granted, Game of Thrones has its fair share of the supernatural, but it's all in a much more subtle fashion than having a giant flaming eye and a ring that controls the world. As for if it's any good, yeah. I never got too attached to his writing style, as it usually bored me, but he's got a pretty well established fantasy world and writes a good story, with likable characters on all sides and without having a real "right or wrong" sort of scenario. There were irredeemable monsters, yeah, but all parties involved had some characters with good and bad motives, which is something I think is really cool. I personally don't much enjoy the books, but I think they're pretty damn good.
TCPeppyTc
Your right Xort, about lack of mystical stuff. That actually was authors intention, in trying to make the books more realsitic, more like midieval europe in its attitudes and places. He had a good idea, but got too caught up in details and tricks. Books are wayyyy to long as well. But they are enjoyable
Psygonis
R.R Martin's style is much more dirtier and rough than Tolkien's. Some passages are a bit hard to bear. But not hard to read. The vocabulary and rythme is more paced than for instance in the Lord of the Rings. Lots of characters though, everywhere in the story. You don't read the tales of some individuals, you watch a whole world in motion. That's not easy to follow but it's passionating all the same. Watching the TV series might even help with that, by putting faces on names. The show's known to render the universe well though. I strongly recommend to read and watch! :
