Pepper Coins

In Star Fox 2, you come across those coins with Sgt. Pepper on the front. 

Do they have a use? I'm not very good at the game nor do I know where to even look, is there anything fancy when you collect them all?

Did find this linked in the manual on Nintendo's website, but that's where my knowledge ends.

Just found out that they unlock Homing on the charge shots, I wonder if this was always the intention and the homing in the betas was just them getting it working, or if they had other plans?
