One thing that I always wondered (don't take it wrong), but it is a sexual reason for a furry always present? Or there can be other reasons? This whole thing is new to me...

In most cultures, humanity tend to tame its sex pulsions, so animal spirit/image/... is a symbol of something unleashed, in a natural state, something that matches the mentioned pulsions. If an animal figure can evoke sexual themes, well... the same represented as a realist anthro would therefore improve the power of the allusion.

crazy> This ad is just brilliant! :D

And so was your explanation above; it was a welcome respite from the normal explanations when it comes to this topic, bravo! And that ad was awesome

WHY INDEED I AM!

aww-yeah.jpg?1300729762

THIS THREAD IS BACK!

And for all you that are afraid of being furry, did you know that the anthro fandom is actually separate from the furry fandom? There's actually a difference there, but I'm just not sure what it is.

It's already been explained but it's a pretty subtle difference. Virtually all furries are fans of anthros but it's not necessarily the same way vice versa.

If you find anthros attractive, that's just what you're into, and that's that. If you happen to come across some rule 34 that strikes your interest, then that's just what you like. Don't be afraid to like something that you already like, as that's kind of nonsensical. I remember at first I was horrified at the slightest bit of cleavage on a fur, and look where I am now. :troll: Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, but it's just what I like and who I am. I certainly understand, though as it's comparable to me and ponies. I distance myself from them in order to prevent the brony-ness that is surprisingly instant, as far as I know. But then, it's certainly interesting from an external perspective. Although I really don't like horses or ponies IRL for that matter, as they make me sneeze.

It's a kink, a fetish, that's basically what it is in a nutshell for most individuals associated with the fandom. It's not like that for all furries obviously however if it's something you like then it's something you like.

But then, being furry is only if you want to identify yourself as one, and as such you're not if you don't want to be.

True. Even though Xort pointed out that you could call a lot of BS on possible scenarios where it's "obvious" someone is a furry if they adamantly deny that is the case and say they aren't one. Furry isn't as much of a label that other people attach to you as much as it is a kind of identity for yourself. Other people, on the other hand, can have their own opinions.

Also, furry fandom is different from bestiality, unless you're into that kind of thing. The bestiality fetish is a subcategory of the fandom as I understand. But liking half-animal half human characters is no different than say, anime, IMO.

It's a subcategory that 99% of furries wish never existed. From a furry's perspective comparing them to people who practice bestiality is like equivalenting Wiccans to Satanists - it's not the same thing and it's a totally misguided and uninformed comparison.

Aaaannnddd... I think that's all for this post. Huzzah! This thread is back and User, you and I, we will BREAK these furs in hiding.

/watches thread and resists posting anthro pinups

Just link them to TailsRulz gallery, apparently Sergiroth got a couple of them converted that way. :troll:

So what, you can commit heinous acts of self-pleasure to extremely well endowed anthropomorphic animals pleasuring each other, and as long as you say "I'm not a furry" then you're not? I mean, I generally agree with the idea behind your statement, but there's going to be some cases where it's just denial. Sometimes, even if you don't want to be, you are an irrevocable furry.

As stated already, it's more of an identity as opposed to a label for some people.

I was more referring, Flux, to the obnoxious minority of furries that love to scream about FURRY RIGHTS!, or become obsessed with "breaking the furs in denial" in some kind of furry porn Borg mentality. Incidentally that's part of the reason why I would not ever call myself a furry; I can't stand most of the fandom.

Those people piss me off as well, even though they're hilarious at times with how they go about it.

You got that completely backwards. Anthropomorphic refers to ANYTHING with human traits, like expressions; by that definition, the cast of The Lion King, Looney Toons, The Brave Little Toaster and Cars are all anthros.

"Furry" is the subculture surrounding the love of anthropomorphic animals and has become synonymous with the creatures themselves but actually more refers to the fandom (or did originally).

Technically yes but in the context of the fandom it pretty much exclusively refers to anthropomorphic animals.

I knew this would have to be brought up again! XD

Warning, somewhat NSFW

Haha, I remember when this first came out. Just....wow...

Not always, however in the vast majority of new cases of "furryism" there almost always is some sort of sexual reason behind it.

Well, yes, if you end up watching animated fox sex 24/7, then yeah, I think you're kind of stuck furry. But in lesser cases, such as being unsure, like some members in this thread, then you can just identify yourself as you want.

It's already been explained but it's a pretty subtle difference. Virtually all furries are fans of anthros but it's not necessarily the same way vice versa.

Exactly. You can be an anthro fan without being a furry.

It's a subcategory that 99% of furries wish never existed. From a furry's perspective comparing them to people who practice bestiality is like equivalenting Wiccans to Satanists - it's not the same thing and it's a totally misguided and uninformed comparison.

Exactly. Just like the common association between furries and fursuits, only 10% of the fandom actually fursuits, and as far as fursuit sex goes, I think you're down to a decimal there. As far as furries and homosexuals go, I think it's somewhere around 65% Bi or Gay, then the rest straight. A majority, but not everyone. Just as not everyone in the fandom is a pervert, which leads me to my next point:

Not always, however in the vast majority of new cases of "furryism" there almost always is some sort of sexual reason behind it.

The fandom is so seeded with sex that it becomes an inherent problem. When I first came to the fandom I was really in it for the clean stuff, because man, did I love wolves! So much GREAT wolf art at my fingertips! But then along comes DA, and a good 80% of the anthro art is sexually themed or suggestive. And I was like: "Hey, anthro wolf boobs. Me gusta." That's just kind of how the fandom is, and I've even seen progression on artists, such as FoxInShadow. His art was originally clean, steampunk stuff, and then eventually progressed to what his gallery looks like now. It takes a lot of willpower to stay in the light, but hey, the people are great, the art is great, and it's just a good time, in my opinion.

Those people piss me off as well, even though they're hilarious at times with how they go about it.

I agree. It reminds me of some speeches we had to give in English class one year. We chose a controversial issue and talked about it. Whereas most of the true gentelmen in the class chose interesting subjects, all the girls in the class chose gay rights. Now, don't take this the wrong way, I'm absolutely fine with homosexuals, but when every single speaker brought up the invalid point that: "being gay is not a choice" it can't help but remind be of how furries say "being furry is not a choice" well, yes, it is a choice. You can choose to remove yourself from the culture, or you can choose to just take it on as a hobby, or you can choose to make it a lifestyle choice. It's up to you, really, and a lot of people are making way too much drama over something so simple!

Of course, partly, it can be contributed to the media, where furries get their bad name from. I was playing L4D2 a couple months back, and I met a non fur. After mentioning that I was furry, he brought up that he actually walks down to the fur con every year, just because it's actually really cool in his opinion. He said that the people are great, and fun to talk to, the costumes show real workmanship, and the artists are awesome too. But the media hypes furries up as some sort of sex monster that molests small children and shortly after eats them. The media is a pain in the tail for furries. The fandom can be what you want it to be, if you want it to be clean, then it can be that, if you want it to be filthier than a homeless person's feet, then it can be that too. Furries are diverse enough to make room for almost anybody, any creed, any fetish, any religion, anything in the fandom.

...Hm.

What exactly are you implying here? That people are furry even though they say they aren't? Like I said earlier it's more of an identify issue and, ridiculous as it might sound, if someone doesn't consider it a part of them then they shouldn't be portrayed as one. Jeremy Bernal for example consistently states he isn't one and he's been doing what he's been doing for at least the past several years. Regardless of whether he's "right" or not that's not the issue. It's his choice whether he wants to include it as part of his identify - everyone else can have their own opinions.

That being said the fandom can sound like a huge contradiction at times over what "makes" someone a furry because there is no universally agreed upon set criteria except possibility that of liking animals or what not. However it's generally accepted that in the fandom if someone says they aren't a furry, then it's not a part of their identify and thus the "furry question" ends up being a moot one.

I've ranted at length about this in the past, and depending on what it is depends on how much flip out. Saying "Gay is a fetish" gets rage, saying something like crossdressing and otherkin is more than just a hobby to some also gets rage. I think you explain it better though.

Ultimatly, it's dependant on the person. Furry is harmless. It's cartoons and unless you go out of your way or are tricked into it, you are not going to come across it. Likewise there are people who deserve ridicule for unacceptible behavior. The Ranamon fanboy who thought he could say what others could and couldn't do with the character. A babyfur who turned up at cons and soil himself.

Yeah, some people go too far. And then there's some people that go WAY too far, as exemplified above.

Out of the blue, I asked to a girl ( Italian too ) on MSN if she knew what a furry was. Turns out she was one, and with a fursuit too.

I'm beginning to think I have superpowers. :troll:

Uh, no. I "implied" that it was humorous that you "agreed" with me over the "breaking the furs in hiding" thing was annoying, and then went instantly on to contradict yourself. Did you not notice the quote names? Or all my other posts saying pretty much the opposite of what you're accusing me of saying?

But there's also a difference between the type that just KNOWS everyone is a furry because Y NOT, FURRY IS THE BEST THING EVUR AND HATERZ ARE JUST IN DENIAL.

Then there are the type that are totally a furry and just swear up and down that they aren't because they're kids/they think its wrong and don't wanna say anything. I was one of those kids once, and I know a good number of confirmed furries who were that way, they're all over the fandom and are called "closet furries".

So yeah, User contradicted himself, but not fully, as you were implying the type of "furry breaker" that are obnoxious pricks that can't except not everyone likes their fetish.

Edit: Adding on, the definition of furry is broad, and there's no agreed upon standard, which adds even more leeway to his claim (ei. you claim you aren't a furry, which may be true, but if I showed your art gallery to another friend he may say "lol furfag.")

"Furry" is a fandom. By not wanting to be a furry, you are not wanting to be associated with the fandom; and for good reason, IMO. So some dude secretly wanks it to fox girls, sure that's the furry fetish but maybe this guy doesn't want to really go around talking with tons about people about how much he loves wanking to fox girls. IE he doesn't want someone constantly on his back hounding him to "come out" as a furry because, despite what he does in his bedroom, he doesn't want to really make his fetish the defining part of his life so much that he would title himself according to it.

Oh I am in much agreeance with that for sure. It's just like that whole, "GAY RIGHTS" and all flying the flag and starting a ruckus, which only make them look worse in the long run, and dig an even bigger rut. And well I don't really see it as myself if I say I am furry, that I am part of the fandom, but if it is the case that that is what it means, and I am somehow -really- late on the ball, then no, I'm not really a furry then because I don't truly fit in with the majority of the fandom.

It's an association thing. If you want to say you're a furry and be associated with the general furry "identity" (which is a rather grim one to anyone on the outside looking in) then say you're a furry, but it's as much of an "ethnic group" as being emo is.

I say that ,no, I am not a furry. I'm not deeply involved in the fandom or anything like that.

That being said, though, I love anthro characters and (clean) anthro art. Human, anthro, normal animal... a character is cool if a character is cool.

Heck, the first reason I checked out Solatorobo: Red the Hunter when I saw a pic of it was because it starred anthros. I may not be a furry, but seeing anthro characters in an original, modern game not about guns and gore excited me.

Ehhh, I'll associate myself only in the sense as liking anthropomorphic media and all.

In all though, it really never matters when you get questions about it.

"Are you a furry?" : Do I like Anthro art work? You betcha, it is pretty cool and BA.

"Are you an emo?" : Do I like cutting myself, no. But I do enjoy wearing black clothing more often than other colors.

That is how I usually those sorta questions like, all the time, unless I am really tired, pissed off, or simply not caring. I guess it just never really mattered or cared to me what I associated the word "Furry" with, and it still doesn't. x3

But yeah, in your sense, no, I am not one, Dras, lol.

Eh, I dunno. I think animals are like, the coolest, anthro or not, but as to weather or not I'm a furry, I don't really care. Also I agree completely with Dras in the furry cause you say you are.

I've only ever said I was a furry once, and I was saying it kinda jokingly and expected the recipient of the comment to go "heh heh, Yeaaaah," but that didn't happen and he started asking me weird questions that i didn't like. So I figure, since I don't really care I may as well not say "Yo dogue Imma furry" and just do what I do maaaaan.

Yeah I so could have worded that post a bit differently XD. It was not my intention to sound like I was contradicting anything but it was difficult to explain nonetheless, heh.
