Uhhhh no. No one is, or has ever had, their rights taken away for being a furry. Furries are allowed to marry. Furries are allowed to vote. Furries were never sold into slavery.

<div>And there's my point proven exactly. I'm off to punch some old ladies in the face, because that's perfectly acceptible as long as I'm not taking away their right to vote.</div>

<div>The rest is just a red herring,</div>

I never said it was acceptable to bully anyone, but you're the one sitting there comparing furries being made fun of to generations-old racial and sexual conflicts.

while calling black people "darkies" and claiming racism no longer exists

i like how Sabre says that furries are the new target du jour for discrimination because racism and homophobia don't exist anymore and then he calls black people "darkies."

it's special.

i also like how he then quite cheerfully says he's off to go punch old women in the face because he's not taking away their right to vote, without realizing that he would instead be infringing on their right not to be assaulted. i know, Sabre, this stuff is hard.

but please, tell me all about how you are unavoidably and systematically targeted for treatment as a second class citizen, not by individuals, not by slices of the media, but by the totality of society and by the government itself. tell me how you are denied your right to vote because you're a furry. tell me how you're not allowed to marry anyone. tell me how you're more likely than a non-furry to sent to jail by a jury of your peers simply because you're a furry. tell me how you have to give up your seat to non-furries on the bus. tell me how you're more likely to be in poverty, more likely to be harassed by the police, more likely to victimized by crime, simply because you're a furry.tell me how you can eradicate from your person any outward sign of your furry allegiance and walk down the street and people will still fear you and assume the worst about you. tell me how your attempts to change this were met with water cannons and beatings and jailing. tell me how the state specifically devises methods of rooting you out of hiding so that you can be subjected to all of the above. tell me how you can't avoid any of this, at all, ever, because you were simply born a furry and you can no more abstain from publicly flaunting your furrydom than you can abstain from publicly breathing.

tell me, please, how it makes sense at all for you to essentially say that Star Trek fans are an ethnic group. because that is, after all, what you're saying. "furry" is a fandom and you can choose to join it or not join it, just as you can choose to join the Star Fox fandom (by, say, posting on a Star Fox fandom about how James McCloud is a messianic figure as supported by three of the Dead Sea Scrolls, if you turn them ninety degrees counterclockwise and read them after drinking half a bottle of absinthe). or, for that matter, how can you choose to beat your meat day and night to furry porn and still not call yourself a furry. you're trying to claim for a fandom the kind of injustices historically suffered by religious and ethnic groups. it's offensive, but more than that, it's ridiculous.

bullying is enough of a problem without you trying to claim special victimhood and demean the victims of bigotries and intolerances far more dangerous and destructive than the worst "anti furs" could ever twistedly dream of achieving.

and most ironically of all, you know why people mock and pick on the furries? 'cuz of the ones who try to compare themselves to blacks under Jim Crow.

and before i forget...no, racism and homophobia are not gone, either.

I know the topic of sexual activity has already been talked about, but if you're worried about people complaining to your host about that topic, I'd say you should be doubly cautious about people tossing around the term "darkie." Being black, I took offense to that. I didn't really voice it because Sabre used quotations, and I don't think he meant it in an offensive way. Just saying there shouldn't be double standards.

I don't get that line of reasoning. It's ok to bully them because at least you are not putting them in death camps? I can only speak for my local fur meet which I attend on rare occations, and they have banned from various bars, pubs and clubs. I wasn't there when any of these bans were put in place, and I've never really cared enough to look into it, but unless some serious shit went down, I don't know why a place would turn away x number of paying customers other than finding out they were furry. I wouldn't say furry is limited to the internet.

As for the crazy anime fan, I have come to understand why those people do what they do, to an extent. I don't want to derail the topic, but it will suffice to say that some most likely have a real reason for doing so.

You weren't talking about bullying though, unless you would call the history of slavery and racism and depriving someone of the right to marry simply bullying. You're comparing someone picking on furries to years of something that happened/is happening on a much more massive and worldwide scale. Also, if you didn't care enough to look into why they were banned from that pub, then you shouldn't use it to back up your point. For all you know it was something completely unrelated to being furries; whatever their interests are could be irrelevant.

There isn't. It's in our rules that racism, sexism, and various other isms are not allowed. In fact, I should probably punish him for it. What do you think, being the offended party?

The most difficult part about this argument, is how suggestive it is.

One may say that being a hardcore anthro fanatic = furry, or just enjoying a decent amount of anthro-related things = furry. Some may even go to say that being a member of this site and a Star Fox fan = furry. LOL

Very suggestive indeed...

Seeing as I don't think he meant it that way, maybe give him a chance to explain what he meant by using it or why he chose to, I suppose, and then editing his post so it doesn't offend anyone else. He shouldn't explain it here of course, since this thread isn't about that. Even though it's kind of derailed already.

I totally agree, 1000% on your statement. Thing is, we don't want to deal with angry parents. It's pretty easy to get our forum upside down because of an angry parent making a call to our host.

I personally don't mind the subject.

This. You can never be too careful, even though I don't personally mind the subject as well. Also, last time I created a topic like this was quite some time (as in several months at least) ago so no, it's not something I discuss on a "Regular basis".

In addition, we're not telling the members here to STOP ALL "mature discussion" of this matter, just to not bring it up in every other post. That's what "tone it down means". :/

I mentioned the fact that you say you like recreating this topic every so often, not "on a regular basis". You said it in the opening post.

Though every other post of yours has something to do with being a furry anyways so the general principle of the notion still applies

Anyways you guys shouldn't be too freaked out, I assume this site is pg-13 like the grand majority of forums out there so I imagine those rules apply. I just think it's a little silly how we can't discuss sexuality as it relates to a complex topic, but Sara can carry my boner quote around in her sig.

I'm really not sure, obviously I enjoy quite a few series that would be considered Furry, e.g. Starfox, VGcats, Sonic etc, and I look at clean anthro art on DA, but I don't really interract with the fandom beyond this forum and the odd comment on Dveiantart. I only know one furry IRL and rarely go on sites like Furaffinity, so I guess i'm more of a furry fan than a fully fledged furry, but as others have said, its debatable where the boundaries of fur and non fur actually lie.

Maybe some people with more knowledge of the fandom could say whether I am one or not for sure, but I certainly identify partially with the fandom and if I knew more furries IRL then maybe I would become a bit more involved in the fandom. As I said, I definitely like anthro characters, but i'm not into it enough to RP, create a fursona or draw my own stuff, partially due to ack of talent, but I certainly still enjoy other peoples things :D

Just adding my thoughts here. I did seriously consider having a talk with Sabre about that, but I honestly believe he meant no offense by it. He added quotation marks and spoke of "gays" and "darkies", and I think he was referring to them as being outdated terms and discriminations. Sabre has an odd way of doing things, but I believe that he was not actually calling African people "darkies". I think, Myu, if you took offense to that, it may be worth your time to PM Sabre and explain that you're offended, give him a chance to explain himself.

All the same, I will PM him now that I've dragged myself away from Dragon Age 2. Hrrrrrrrn Anders. :3

I'm in agreeance that Sabre, for once, meant no offence here. In fact, given the context of the post in question, I think taking offence is actually a bit silly. That said, I've never really been on the receiving end of racial discrimination, so it's just as likely that I'm totally full of shit here, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Insert massive but extremely intelligent text wall here.

That's it! You, sir, are awesome. That's my point exactly, but much more well-written. Furries are not comparable to gays and black people! It's just not happening! Furries are an entirely different thing, and man, you wrote that in such a way that it really hammers the point home. I commend you.

So, I suppose I'm obliged to handle this more like a doctor and less like a street...guy...(?). Proper words, people, use them. Medical terms.

And protip for all the unsure furs around here... Stay AWAAAYY from FurAffinity. Even the mature content filter can't save your eyeballs. If there's something you're looking for, find it quick and get out of there, fast. FA is terrifying at worst and gratifying at best.

And lol @ how ALL THE MODERATORS jump on this topic.

That's a good point. It was time to change my sig anyways.

On a related note, however, we weren't necessarily saying you couldn't discuss it, we just wanted you to have some discretion. Feel free to discuss it, but yeah, discretion. Please? :3

:collapse:

On topic;

I'd definitely consider myself a furry; I enjoy the art, I have several fursonas to RP with, and I'd have no problem wearing a fursuit if I had the time, money, and/or desire to; it's just a glorified mascot costume after all.
