Hypothetical scenario:  Nintendo announces the new game will start from one of Command's endings, and asked you to pick your favorite (or least hated) ending.

So which ending would you choose?

Ok I'll bite. First I'm going to take out the endings that for sure cannot be continued off of, either because of blatant stupidity on the part of the writers or just flat out blasphemy:

The Curse of Pigma - I'm sorry if I have this one mixed up with Pigma's Revenge, but I am pretty sure this is the one where Falco and Fox become "G-Zero" pilots and stuff. A spinoff of F-Zero is not likely (then again, neither is an official F-Zero game...but that's another discussion altogether) to be in the works in the near future. I give this a grade of 2/10 for fanfiction from the broken heart of an F-Zero fan.

Slippy's Resolve - Yes, Slippy in a top hat is probably one of the best things to come out of SF Command, but I don't think anyone really wants to see him get old and retire, down the line, eventually become senile (Considering the ending states that he wonders if SF still flies around saving Lylat in his old age...)

Lucy and Krystal - I'll admit this one has more potential than the other two I mentioned, partly because everything goes back to the way things were for the most part. However, quite literally nothing happens as a result. So why even bother with this ending? Sure, Lucy has about 1000000000 times more potential as a character than Amanda, hence giving some reason for the ending to exist, but you could very well introduce Lucy as a character with no new information on her in a future game, while pretending Command never happened, and there would be no difference in how players perceive her character. Ok fine, so her mother adds the illusion of depth to her backstory as well as Peppy's, but at this point in the series, if Peppy really going down the road of "wise old man past his prime", why introduce new character relations that would have been much more interesting to examine earlier in the series?

Starwolf Returns - Kursed....there's your reason why this must never become cannon...need I say more?

This next segment will be ideas that could work, but it's a bit of a stretch. The problem is you have major shifts in time or character relationships that just are too hard to buy into as a fan of the series. At least that's the way I see it.

Good-bye Fox - So Marcus is born and everyone else gets older. Marcus is the leader of the new Star Fox team, Lucy and some son of Slippy become members, and Falco takes that place of Peppy in that he is the "Older, more experienced pilot whose advice you should heed". It comes across as a cop-out on the part of the writers, who should instead take the time to develop the current characters. Though I will admit, Falco getting mad at the rest of team for mistakes would be hilarious.

Pigma's Revenge - Hopefully not mixed up with the other Pigma related ending. Star Falco, yup...I can't buy into the idea that Falco would altogether give up on Star Fox, especially not because he admits his own selfishness. If anything, that would make him a better team member, as that would be a sign of character growth.

Ideas that could work, and are probably the most "realistic endings" segment:

Fox and Krystal - Amanda joins the team. Literally nothing else changes, maybe except that Fox and Krystal now feel a closer connection in their relationship. Why could this work? Unlike Lucy and Krystal, something happened. Although it was a small change, at the end of the day, nothing was broken as far as I am concerned.

Dash Makes a Choice - Dash becomes the new Andross. However, this could go horribly if Dash literally becomes the new embodiment of Andross, giant floating head and all. However, I can see something interesting here with his relationship to Andrew. Imagine Andrew becoming jealous that Dash was able to accomplish his dreams in a shorter time frame. Dash is a more interesting character than Andross in that we would ultimately get to see the slow process of him becoming corrupted over time, rather than simply being told about it and buy into it because we have no other viewpoint from which to examine those events.

The Anglar Emperor - Here is the ending the fandom was split for a while over. On one hand, we see Krystal do a complete 180 in her personality, turning into a completely different character, and turning on Fox (note, after he had turned on her) and joining Star Wolf so she can be with Panther. All ridiculous love drama aside, this is actually the most believable ending in my opinion, and admittedly is the one I can get behind the most. Krystal doing something completely out of character actually brings out the most characterization we have seen in the series since Adventures. Also, with this event in place, it would then become a more believable scenario if Falco were to leave the team in similar manner as "Pigma's Revenge", although I still stand by my statement from before.

Ultimately, I feel there is less to lose and far more to gain from playing out The Anglar Emperor than from any other endings. The best part of it is how it does not rule out Dash becoming a character and playing out his corruption story arc. Maybe the writers could potentially tease Dash becoming a Star Fox member before he makes the decision to look over Venom. And that's just one idea I came up with off the top of my head.

So those are my insights on the SF Command endings. Ultimately some play it too safe, while others are far too over the top.

Seconding The Anglar Emperor.

Halfassed Panther romance aside, putting Krystal on Star Wolf was probably the best idea this game had. It's really weird, but she feels more like an actual team member with them, like she actually has chemistry with everyone. I've mentioned this before, but one of the biggest issues with her on Star Fox is that by virtue of the team essentially belonging to Fox, all her potential storylines are deprioritized in favour of whatever he's doing, and her relationship to the rest of the team is filtered entirely through him. A character like her with such a weird backstory really can't function properly there when it's an inherent effect of the way the character factions are set up.

I really need to replay the game so I can ensure I'm not just filling in the blank spots with my headcanon, but I also don't really buy the criticism that she "only joined Star Wolf to get back at Fox!" because I feel like Star Wolf was more thematically relevant to her as a character. In Command, they're the galaxy's biggest outcasts that still want to do good despite their circumstances. That is literally Krystal--the last of her kind, unsure of where she belongs and cast out by the one person she thought she could trust? She's a misfit, and I think the guys on Star Wolf have a deeper respect for her because of it. That's interesting in the sense that the writers seem to have taken a gross writing flaw from Adventures and Assault and actually turned it into a reasonable character conflict.

The plotline might've had some spotty moments, but ultimately it was one of the few choices Command made that I really enjoyed--it really finally turned Krystal into an actual person and I just see so much more potential moving forward with her on Star Wolf because it puts her in a better position to relate with others and explore herself and her history under less conventional terms (ie. not dictated entirely by Fox).

The next best endings are Fox and Krystal and Lucy and Krystal simply because they just put everything back to status quo. I'm mixed on Star Wolf Returns because the premise of "left Lylat 4EVER because RANDOM PEOPLE were ANGRY that she broke up with FOX" was literally the dumbest thing I have ever seen, but her being a kickass bounty hunter running around doing her own shit is kind of cool.

Good Bye Fox can crawl back into the pit of Hell it came from and burn there for all eternity.

Fox and Krystal, Lucy and Krystal, and Goodbye Fox are the only endings I really like, but I'd go with Lucy and Krystal since it nearly changes nothing from what brief looks have told me.

I can't really give in depth thoughts as to which I like best as I haven't played enough of Command, so for now I will not vote or elaborate further.

Fox and Krystal or Lucy and Krystal...

I don't remember much of the main story, but is a combo of the two possible? They save the day, They pick up Amanda, and then go party? (Amanda is in one of the party pictures after all. And as they party, Dash is making his venom empire.

But if I had to choose one or the other, I would probably have to pick Lucy and Krystal. I don't know how I feel about the team becoming THAT big. There's Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy, Krystal, and ROB. 6 People, 7 or 8 might be a bit of a hand full... Although welcome if they ACTUALLY DO STUFF IN THE MISSION. (Like seriously, I don't recall the team mates being useful outside of the SNES game) (Or if they set it up similar to mass effect, then I can see a bigger crew being acceptable and Amanda/Lucy joining... If Lucy does join)

ANYWAY, Krystal and Lucy is probably my favorite of the endings, only beating Fox and Krystal because I don't know how I feel about Venom becoming a "good" planet.

If I had a choice, I would continue on from either the 'Fox and Krystal' ending, for the sake of the new SF Wii U
game that's coming out, or the 'Goodbye, Fox' ending, solely because I want to see what the new Star Fox team run
by Fox and Krystal's son, Marcus, would be like.

Thank you for taking the time to write all this! There's just no way Nintendo would continue the story from any ending command had to offer. However, if the big N does decide to do so then i hope it goes into the whole dash becoming the new Andross type of thing. It would probably be like Star Fox 64  but at least its better then nothing or even worst, a game based on  some drama between animals in space lol

  • 2 weeks later...

The endings that Dras mentioned would be the least destructive routes to take, and if worst comes to worst, those would be the best ones to choose.

That being said, I sincerely hope that Nintendo does NOT make this game a sequel to Command. Continuing off from Assault would be bad enough IMO, but doing it from Command would be putting the gun to the franchise's head and pulling the trigger.

Reboot the series or continue where 64 left off from either the brain or robot ending, but don't make it a sequel to the GC/DS trilogy.
