Star Wolf spin off game

SF Redd

Recommended Posts

Well, assuming there will be no delays, the elusive Star Fox for Wii U should be arriving in the not-so-distant future!

But I was thinking, if this game sells well, that may open doors for new Star Fox games within a few years, maybe in the first year or so of the NX. On that topic, would you like to see a Star Wolf spin off game? I certainly would! I think if it did happen, it would be an opportunity to expand on the lore of the Star Wolf team. It could be a darker take on the Star Fox universe, focusing on the grittier side of the Lylat system, maybe developing the characters a bit more. Something that interests me is the fact that we don't even know the Star Wolf team logo(if they have one) like we have the red winged Fox on the Great Fox and the Arwings for Fox's team. The closest we have is Wolf's belt buckle in Brawl, and that can't be taken very seriously, never mind canon.

Anyway I digress. Would you like to see Star Wolf spin off? If so, what would you like to see from it?

I think a Star Wolf spinoff would have the potential to be fun and interesting but it also has the potential to be... well...

Not really championing for a "dark and grittier" Star Fox game with these guys, but they could definitely be used to explore different facets and factions of Lylat and give depth to the characters in a way that doesn't necessarily detract from a main Star Fox-centric story (ie. Leon's backstory probably would be more relevant in a spinoff than in a main game, so on).

I REALLY hope this thread doesn't turn into something like the Pie Man thread.

But I am willing to check out the Star Wolf spin off. This could be like the Luigi's Mansion of Star Fox.

I always find it repulsively amusing when people try to make Star Fox, esp. Wolf, into some Everything is dark and violent and sexual fuck you dad for not letting me go to Hot Topic with Willow and Alec Star Fox is srs story 66/6 so edgy still somehow bang my sworn mortal enemy Fox invented backstory totally ripped off inspired by better characters from better franchises origami crane donut steel la-dee-da. All this forced dramaticness and plot-twistiness and searching for any hint of lore/backstory is really more immature than intentionally cheesy one-liners and barely-there plots. The utter rejection of anything "kiddy" or "cute" is frankly a middle-school level mentality at best. That's what made Assault and Command utterly suck.

The whole thing honestly kinda reminds me of Patrick Bateman's ramblings on '80s pop albums in "American Psycho"-overly serious and academic for what the subject matter is, and maybe just a taaaaad creepy (and without the sharp social commentary of Bateman's ramblings). In my (superior) opinion, it seems more like the fans trying to justify their love of a fun '90s space-shooter game because they're afraid of being seen as immature and probably need to get outta mama's basement. A darker/more "adult"/more in-depth take on Star Fox can work, but most of the time the people helming it have, to blatantly steal paraphrase a line from a friend of mine, "their heads shoved so far up their asses they're seeing out their mouths". Now if you'll excuse me, don't just stare at it. Eat it.

tl;dr LOL get a life losers :P

I would love to see a Star Wolf spinoff one of these days, but to be honest there hasn't been a Star Fox game in recent memory that I'd refer to objectively as very good, and I feel as if that groundwork should come first.  There is quite a bit of potential with the series; sci-fi lends itself well to varying adaptations of settings, technologies, etc.   I hope that the Wii U game will alleviate some of the mediocrity that has been seemingly present ever since Nintendo gave up in-house development of the series.

for some reason i think a Star Wolf spinoff game could be done that preserves their villainous (or at least anti-heroic) attributes without going all grimdark wanky original the character do not steal bullshit, but i'm struggling to think of examples, so maybe i'm just trippin bawls

Legacy of Kain series was good for that, though that wasn't a kiddish game at all. Still though, Kain was the villain of Soul Reaver, and in Blood Omen 2 and Defiance you played as him and he was very not the most evil thing on the planet. But he's still an egotistical dick. In a cool way.

Honestly though it could still apply that way, they did it so well in Legacy of Kain by making him the not worst thing out there, and giving him redeeming qualities amidst his negative ones, for instance, throughout the entirety of the LoK series, at no point does he outright lie. He bends and stretches the truth and tells half-truths, but does not outright lie.

Another good example being Doctor Doom from Marvel.

I'll just quote the Wiki summary of the What If: Secret Wars story line.

In What If: Secret Wars, Doom is made aware of the Beyonder's survival by the Enchantress and kills him. He returns to Earth and defeats various threats to his power such as the Inhumans, Eternals and the remaining superheroes, with Tony Stark and Dr. Strange being the last opponents. He establishes a "paradise" on Earth by eliminating global warming, poverty, war and providing a device for unlimited energy. Next, he deals with cosmic threats and defeats the united forces of the Skrull, Kree, Shi'ar, Technarchy, Badoon and Brood. While in space, he obtains the Infinity Gems by defeating the Elders of the Universe. He uses them to release his mother's soul from Mephisto's captivity. Eventually, he comes in conflict with the Celestials, but defeats them after a 407-year-long battle. Earth has suffered from the conflict and Doom uses his remaining power to restore it. He rejoins humanity to aid and guide them to become a powerful force, introducing himself as simply "Victor" rather than Doom.

On a serious note though, there are many ways to make a more adult or serious setting without becoming goofy or resorting to illogical extremes. Bringing up something from the past while making some sense, for instance, can give a nice setting for a background course of events. It MIGHT give space for them to pull off another Hijacked By Ganon but at the same time it can introduce some enemy that's not "A NEW THREAT RISES!" or Andross again.

Things don't need to go all the way down Human Revolution route by making a decidedly bittersweet storyline with a pre-apocalyptic setting and thick conspiracy webs that give you hard choices, and I think it's out of the question to go over the top like the aforementioned Metal Gear Rising with bajillion remains of a sliced-up fox/dog/wolf/lizard/mole monster or what-have-you. But it's not impossible to make a respectable StarWolf story without being comically or offensively edgy.

Of course, however, there is the undeniable need for a respectable installment of the main series first.

If you wanted it to focus on the grittier side of the SF universe like the OP did but still keep SF's overall cheesy goofy atmosphere, you could just give us a sorta cheesy mafia style thing where Star Wolf gets in too deep and have to fight off the mob or something idk

Honestly I kinda just wanna see space manimals in fedoras with tommyguns talking with cliche mobster accents now really. I think that'd be good fun.

^ YEAH that would own pretty hard.

Basically people gotta stop thinking of Star Wolf as being more inherently dark/"mature" than Star Fox. Less Shadow the Hedgehog, more Team Rocket. Embrace the good-to-be-badness as it exists in talking space animal world.

It is an interesting idea. One of the few things I liked about Star Fox Assault was the portrayal of Wolf as not inherently evil, but rather as a guy just trying to make his way through life in the only way he knows how.

One thing I most definitely would NOT want from this would be "Let's tell the Star Fox story from Wolf's point of view."

In fact, I could see this as a ground-focused game. Perhaps start right at the end of the events of Star Fox 64. You play as Wolf. He wakes up dazed laying next to a wrecked and burning Wolfen II. He awakens just in time to see Andross' base blow. He has to escape before the Cornerian ground forces land. Of course, he needs to find the Wolfen Is first.

Then he must navigate Lylat's criminal underworld to regain his reputation and eventually take control of the Sargasso Gang. Seriously, Wolf went from being shot down as one of Andross' goons to having his own personal army. It would be nice to explore how this happened.

So essentially Sleeping Dogs/Grand Theft with furries.

Ah fuck ... you know' I'd still play that.

Not necessarily. It doesn't need to be open world.

In fact, after some thought, I could see it being a spiritual successor to Star Fox Adventures, if you will. Zelda in space, but with blasters instead of magic sticks, and with a character that is most definitely an anti-hero. And it fits the universe.

Hell it could even be linear. There is nothing wrong with a linear game if done correctly.

This actually got me thinking that a TPS type deal similar to Resident Evil 4 would work quite well, too. Faster paced and less survival horror type deal, but that style of movement and control.

I do like the Zelda conversion idea. But when you think of something this size, it maybe is just me but, when you got a whole system for possibilities I'm just saying a developer might want to make use of that. Like as an example: Twilight Princess wasn't completely open world but still had the availability to move around freely With it's little side quests and such. Hell, one could reuse some of the concepts from that game with like flying a Wolfen through space to reach X, Y, or Z.

My thinking so far: I like the idea of the semi-bad boy regaining his rep with the ability to showcase the team as not completely moral-less characters. I think a linear motion wouldn't be the best way to showcase this idea but it could work still. Just thinking, in 64 we knew them as hard, tough mercs that were just out gunned. In Assault we had this repeated but there was a "soft side." Now here's a crazy idea and I want you to wait before you formulate this one.

Dras posted a picture of that Edge the Edgehog game. It may have been shit, but I'm just ballin' in saying that the split destinies of that game could really be implemented in this idea. Go more hardass or go more Han Solo good guy.

Just an idea.

Honesty, if there were to be a Star Wolf game, I would want it to be a comedic spin-off. It can be still cool, but it would be unique if it completely made fun of itself. Think of it like a "if Deadpool met the Last Action Hero movie" kind of story. I mean lets be honest here, Star Fox is a very silly story, and Star Wolf is, in many respects, supposed to be an obvious ying-yang carbon copy of the Star Fox team. Not to mention, Pigma, Andrew, Leon (64 or Assault) and Panther are all portrayed in a silly fashion (I would argue Wolf as well, but I know not everyone would agree). In short, I would like to see the spin-off as a more aggressive (fitting the Star Wolf team), but a complete farce of a game.

In my mind it seems highly unlikely, but I'd surely welcome it with open arms if it ever was a thing.
